To make Gboard your Samsung Galaxy’s default keyboard, install it from the Google Play Store if necessary, then select it in Settings > General management > Keyboard list and default > Default keyboard. Choose Gboard.
Install Gboard if it is not on your phone

Open the Google Play Store and install Gboard if it is not already installed. Google’s Gboard setup instructions cover installation on Android phones and tablets.

Choose Gboard as the default keyboard

Open Settings.

Tap General management.

Tap Keyboard list and default.

Tap Default keyboard.

Select Gboard. Samsung’s Galaxy keyboard instructions describe choosing the desired keyboard from this setting.

Menu names and locations may vary as Galaxy software changes. If you do not see the path above, open Settings and search for Keyboard list and default. Samsung’s US keyboard-settings page also uses this setting name.

If Gboard does not appear in the list

Check that Gboard is installed, then return to Default keyboard. Samsung’s instructions say to download a keyboard before selecting it, and Google documents how to install Gboard.

If it still does not appear after searching Settings and checking installation, consult device-specific support for your Galaxy model and software version. The available Samsung instructions do not establish a universal fix for every device.

Check which keyboard is currently selected
Do not assume Samsung Keyboard or Gboard is already active. Google notes that Gboard is the default on some Android devices; check the selection shown under Default keyboard on your Galaxy.

Changing the typing language in Gboard does not change the Galaxy’s device language. Google explains this distinction in its guide to typing in a different language.
