Choose the stream’s resolution and frame rate first, then set FFmpeg’s video bitrate to YouTube’s H.264 recommendation for that combination. For a practical 720p30 starting point, use 6 Mbps video, AAC stereo at 128 kbps, a two-second keyframe interval, and RTMPS—provided the VPS can encode the source in real time and sustain the required upload bandwidth.
Choose a resolution and bitrate
Bitrate recommendations depend on the ingest codec, resolution, and frame rate. YouTube’s current H.264 recommendations include the following video bitrates; these are video-only figures, so budget separately for audio and network overhead. YouTube’s encoder settings also recommend CBR, frame rates up to 60 fps, and a two-second keyframe frequency, not exceeding four seconds.

For a first test on a modest VPS, 720p30 is a reasonable example if your source and server can sustain it. Do not treat it as a guaranteed fit: the platform’s bitrate guidance does not say how much CPU a particular VPS needs.
Set the FFmpeg options
This example loops a local file and publishes an H.264/AAC stream at 720p30-style bitrate settings:

-repaces file input in real time, which is useful when sending a prerecorded file as a live stream. FFmpeg cautions against using a low read rate on a real live input because it can cause packet loss. See the FFmpeg documentation.-b:vsets the target video bitrate;-b:asets audio bitrate. FFmpeg expresses these bitrate values in bits per second, so6000kmeans 6,000 kilobits per second.-maxrateand-bufsizeshape rate control. The buffer value is not extra network capacity, and setting these options does not guarantee a perfectly flat instantaneous bitrate.- The command expects an audio stream in the input. If none exists, map or generate audio deliberately rather than assuming FFmpeg can encode a missing stream.
- If the input is already encoded suitably, stream copy may reduce CPU demand, but check codec and container compatibility and verify the resulting stream before relying on it.
If your output is not 30 fps, adjust the GOP to keep the keyframe interval near two seconds: for example, 120 frames at 60 fps. Confirm the actual input and output frame rates rather than inferring them from a filename.
Budget outbound bandwidth
YouTube recommends leaving about 20% upload-bandwidth headroom and accounting for both primary and backup streams if you use one. At 6 Mbps video plus 128 kbps audio, the payload is about 6.13 Mbps before overhead; allowing 20% headroom means planning for roughly 7.4 Mbps of sustained outbound capacity. Check the VPS provider’s traffic allowance, port limits, and the actual route to YouTube. A speed test alone does not establish that the server can sustain the required outbound rate continuously.
Check whether the VPS can encode in real time
There is no evidence-based universal vCPU or RAM minimum for this workload. Encoding demand depends on resolution, frame rate, codec, x264 preset, source complexity, other processes, and whether the VPS is encoding or merely forwarding a compatible pre-encoded stream.
- Run a representative test using content with motion and audio similar to the stream you intend to leave running.
- Watch FFmpeg’s reported speed and CPU use. If processing speed falls below real time, the server is not keeping up with the live output.
- Check YouTube Live Control Room’s preview and stream health while the test runs; YouTube can report warnings about bitrate, codec, audio, or keyframes.
- If encoding cannot keep pace, lower resolution or frame rate, choose a faster x264 preset, or move to a plan with more dedicated compute. Test the changed configuration again.
YouTube’s encoder guidance recommends testing with audio and motion similar to the real stream and checking stream health. A short successful launch is not proof that a VPS will remain stable unattended.

Use RTMPS and verify the stream before leaving it unattended
For a conventional H.264 stream, use RTMPS unless your workflow requires another ingest protocol. YouTube describes RTMPS as an encrypted extension of RTMP. Its protocol comparison explains that HLS and DASH are segment-based and generally have greater latency, while supporting other codec and high-resolution use cases.
- In YouTube Live Control Room, create or select the live stream and copy its ingest URL and stream key into the FFmpeg destination.
- Start FFmpeg and confirm that both video and audio appear in the Live Control Room preview.
- Review the stream-health indicator and resolve any bitrate, codec, keyframe, or audio warnings before depending on the setup.
- Leave a representative test running long enough to reveal CPU, network, and process problems. For unattended operation, arrange process supervision and alerting; a bitrate setting alone cannot guarantee an uninterrupted stream.
Keep YouTube copyright and monetization rules in view
Streaming a prerecorded file does not grant permission to use its video or audio. Use material you own, have licensed for the intended use, or are otherwise permitted to stream. A stream that stays online is not necessarily eligible for monetization: YouTube’s copyright and channel monetization policies are separate from the technical ingest settings. Review YouTube’s current copyright guidance and channel monetization policies for your situation.
Troubleshoot common failures
