For a 24/7 YouTube playlist stream, a practical H.264 starting point is 1080p at 30 fps, CBR at a bitrate within YouTube’s recommended 5–14 Mbps range, a 2-second keyframe interval, and stereo AAC audio at 128 kbps. If your source or sustained upload capacity cannot support that reliably, use 720p30 at 3–8 Mbps instead. These are YouTube’s recommended ingest ranges, not a reason to select the highest number automatically. Test with your actual files and monitor stream health before relying on a continuous broadcast.
Choose a resolution and bitrate your connection can sustain
Resolution, frame rate, codec and bitrate work together. YouTube’s current encoder guidance recommends the following H.264 ingest ranges. The figures are recommendations from YouTube Help, accessed in 2026; they are not guarantees of a particular visual result or network performance.

For many playlist streams, 1080p30 is a sensible first setting if the source is actually 1080p and the connection has enough stable upstream capacity. Choose a point within the recommended range based on the video’s detail and motion, then test representative sections. A mostly static picture may not need the top of the range, but that is a practical judgment, not a YouTube rule. Use 720p30 when the source is lower resolution or the connection cannot consistently sustain the higher output.

Set the encoder parameters
YouTube’s encoder guidance supports RTMP/RTMPS ingest, H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1, frame rates up to 60 fps, and CBR. For the familiar H.264 settings below, use progressive video, square pixels and Rec. 709 for SDR material. YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted delivery.
- Rate control: CBR.
- Keyframes: every 2 seconds; do not let the interval exceed 4 seconds.
- Audio: AAC stereo at 128 kbps is YouTube’s recommendation; for stereo, use a 44.1 kHz sample rate.
- Resolution and frame rate: match a supported output to the source and the upload capacity. Avoid needlessly increasing a low-resolution source.
For example, at 30 fps, a 2-second keyframe interval corresponds to a keyframe every 60 frames. The exact FFmpeg options depend on the encoder in use and on whether the inputs can be copied or need to be decoded and re-encoded. Do not assume that a single generic command will suit every playlist or host.

Prepare a compatible playlist
FFmpeg’s concat demuxer can read a text list of media files sequentially. Its documented compatibility requirements matter: the files need the same streams, codecs and time base. The demuxer adjusts timestamps for each next file using the preceding file’s duration, so inaccurate duration metadata can lead to gaps or artifacts. Read the FFmpeg concat demuxer documentation.

Check that their stream layouts and media parameters are compatible, especially if they came from different sources or editing workflows.
- Decide whether stream copy is appropriate. If the files meet the concat demuxer’s compatibility requirements and already have the desired output characteristics, stream copying may be possible. If not, they may need decoding and re-encoding, scaling, or frame-rate conversion so the output stays consistent.
- Test the full sequence and transitions. Verify that timestamps remain continuous and that audio and video behave correctly at file boundaries. Duration metadata errors may only become apparent when files are joined.
The concat documentation describes sequential demuxing and its constraints; it does not establish one universal production-ready command for infinite looping, reconnection and unattended recovery. Build and test those behaviors with your actual files and FFmpeg setup rather than treating a sample playlist command as a complete 24/7 service.

Connect FFmpeg to YouTube Live and test before going public
- In YouTube Live Control Room, create or select a live stream and obtain its stream URL and stream key. Follow YouTube’s encoder setup workflow.
- Configure FFmpeg’s output for the YouTube ingest destination, using the URL and key shown for that stream and the resolution, bitrate, frame rate, codec and audio settings you selected.
- Keep the stream key private. YouTube uses it to identify and accept the encoder feed, so anyone with access to it may be able to send video to your stream.
- Start with a test and check YouTube’s preview and stream health before depending on the broadcast. YouTube Help explicitly advises: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.”
For a continuous stream, reliability depends on more than encoder values: the source files and timing must work, FFmpeg must keep running, and the host’s upload connection must remain adequate. No particular FFmpeg command or network setup guarantees uptime. Plan how you will monitor the process and respond if the encoder or connection stops.
Plan separately for a 24-hour archive
YouTube’s automatic archive guidance applies to streams under 12 hours. If a stream exceeds 12 hours, it may not be captured at all. A single uninterrupted 24/7 broadcast therefore should not be treated as a dependable source of a complete YouTube archive. If preserving the content matters, plan an independent recording or use shorter sessions where an archive is needed. See YouTube’s archive guidance.

Troubleshoot common stream problems
- YouTube reports unstable or insufficient input: The configured total bitrate may exceed sustained upload capacity, or the connection may be fluctuating. Reduce the output bitrate or resolution, test again, and judge by stream health rather than a peak speed-test result.
- Video looks soft or blocky: Check that the bitrate is appropriate for the resolution and motion, and that the source itself contains enough detail. Test representative high-motion portions before increasing bitrate; any increase must still fit the connection.
- Video or audio glitches at file boundaries: Check concat compatibility—streams, codecs and time base—and confirm that duration metadata is accurate. Normalize or re-encode files when needed to create a consistent sequence.
- The stream is not accepted by YouTube: Recheck the stream URL and key in the encoder destination settings, confirm the selected ingest configuration, and inspect Live Control Room’s preview and stream-health status.
- The 24-hour broadcast has no complete archive: A session beyond YouTube’s 12-hour threshold may not be captured. Use a separate recording plan or shorter sessions if preserving the broadcast is important.
