There is no single spending-limit switch for Claude Code: the right control depends on whether usage is billed to a Claude subscription, an Anthropic Console organization, or a cloud provider. Identify that billing route first, then set the relevant limit and use the matching billing dashboard to verify charges.
First, identify how Claude Code is billed
Anthropic says Claude Code charges by API token consumption, but the account that pays depends on how you authenticate and which service you use. Subscription usage draws on a plan allowance; Console/API usage is billed to an Anthropic organization; and deployments through Amazon Bedrock, Google Cloud’s Agent Platform, or Microsoft Foundry are billed through the cloud provider. Each route has different controls and reporting.

For Console-billed use, configure the cap on the Claude Code workspace—not on the Default Workspace. When an organization member first signs in to Claude Code with a Claude Console account, Anthropic automatically creates a Claude Code workspace.

- In the Anthropic Console, open Settings > Workspaces.
- Select the Claude Code workspace.
- Open its Spend limits tab, set the monthly spend limit, and configure alerts as needed.
- Check the organization’s limits as well: a workspace limit cannot exceed the organization limit.
The Default Workspace cannot have its own limits. Also distinguish a monetary spend limit from a workspace rate limit: rate limits control request or token throughput, not a dollar budget. See Anthropic’s rate-limit documentation for the separate throughput controls.
For actual API billing, use the Console’s Usage page. Claude Code’s /usage session-dollar figure is calculated locally and is only an estimate. An organization can configure managed model pricing for reporting, but that does not make the session estimate an invoice.

Manage usage credits on Pro or Max
Pro and Max included usage is governed by the subscription’s usage windows. Extra usage credits are a separate way to keep using Claude after the included allowance is used; enabling credits can therefore lead to charges beyond the subscription allowance.

- Check whether extra usage credits are enabled for your account.
- If you use credits, set a monthly spend limit rather than leaving the limit at Unlimited.
- Run
/usageto see current-month credit spend and compare it with the configured limit. - If Claude prompts you to raise or remove the limit after you reach it, decline if your priority is avoiding further credit spending.
Anthropic’s extra-usage help page explains the credit mechanism. The subscription allowance and paid credits are distinct: checking only your plan’s included usage does not tell you whether credits can be used afterward.

Set controls for Teams or Enterprise
On Teams and Enterprise, Claude Code uses a member’s seat allowance, shared with Claude chat and Cowork. If the organization enables usage credits so people can continue beyond included allowances, an admin can set a spend limit at the organization, group, or individual-member level in Claude account administration.
Members can use /usage to view their current-month credit spend against an applicable individual limit. An organization-wide cap may not appear as an individual row, so admins should also monitor organization analytics instead of relying only on each member’s view. Use the cloud provider’s billing controls for cloud deployments
When Claude Code is configured for Amazon Bedrock, Google Cloud’s Agent Platform, or Microsoft Foundry, charges go to the cloud account. Set budget alerts or spending controls in that provider’s billing console; Anthropic’s Claude Code analytics do not include cloud-billed usage.
For per-user attribution, OpenTelemetry or an LLM gateway may help. A gateway’s budget enforcement is an additional third-party configuration, not an Anthropic-native Claude Code spending cap. Anthropic’s gateway documentation discusses these options and notes that LiteLLM is a third-party service that Anthropic does not endorse, maintain, or audit.

Monitor usage and reduce avoidable spend
- Check the right dashboard: use
/usagefor session token usage and plan details; verify Console/API charges on the Console Usage page and cloud charges with the cloud provider. - Watch credit status: on subscription plans, check whether usage credits are enabled and whether their monthly limit is set. Unlimited is not a hard cap.
- Keep context focused: use
/clearwhen moving to unrelated work so stale context is not carried into later requests. - Match the model and concurrency to the task: model choice, context size, concurrent instances, and automated agent use can all affect costs. Avoid unnecessary parallel sessions or agent teams.
Anthropic’s cost guide describes these cost drivers. Do not treat --max-turns as a spending cap: it limits agentic turns in print mode, and Anthropic does not document it as a monetary limit.
