You can care about your parent and still set limits on what you can do. Tell them clearly what support you can offer, what you cannot take on, and who else you will involve. If they may act on suicidal thoughts now or have already attempted suicide, seek emergency help rather than negotiating a boundary. You are not responsible for being their only crisis plan.
What should you do if your parent may be in immediate danger?
If your parent has attempted suicide or you believe they may act immediately, focus on getting help now. Contact the emergency service for the place where they are. If you can stay with them without putting yourself in danger, do so while help is arranged. Do not put yourself at risk trying to remove dangerous items. Mind’s guidance on helping someone who feels suicidal advises emergency help when there is immediate risk.

Use the crisis route for your location
- United States: Call or text 988 for crisis support. For a serious, life-threatening emergency, NAMI advises calling 911. See 988 Lifeline guidance for helping someone else and NAMI’s mental-health-crisis guidance.
- United Kingdom: Cambridge University Hospitals NHS guidance says to call 999 for immediate danger; for non-immediate concern, it lists 111 and Samaritans. See the hospital’s supporter guidance.
- Elsewhere: Use the local emergency number or crisis service where your parent is. The U.S. and U.K. numbers above do not apply everywhere.
If your parent tells you they have a plan to hurt themselves, do not promise to keep it secret. The U.S. 988 Lifeline says, “Never keep it a secret if a friend tells you about a plan to hurt themselves.” Its wording refers to a friend, but the safety point applies here: involve someone who can help. 988 Lifeline: Help Someone Else.
What does a healthy boundary look like?
A boundary defines what you can do and what you will do next; it does not control your parent’s feelings or guarantee their safety. It might set limits on when you can talk, what kind of help you can provide, or what you will do if you hear about an immediate plan. Supporter guidance from Cambridge University Hospitals notes that not everything about another person’s safety and wellbeing is within a supporter’s control, and that it is appropriate to look after your own wellbeing. Make the limit concrete
Choose wording that describes your actual capacity, rather than making a promise you cannot sustain. Mind recommends agreeing boundaries to clarify expectations and the support each person can offer. Mind: Supporting someone after a suicide attempt.
“I love you and want you to have support. I can talk for a little while, but I can’t be your only support. Let’s contact someone else together.”

How can you support your parent without becoming their only support?
When the situation is not immediately dangerous, you can listen without judgment, ask plainly whether they are thinking about suicide, and encourage connection with professional or other trusted support. Mind also recommends asking whether a crisis or safety plan exists. Mind: How to help someone who feels suicidal.

- Ask your parent who else they trust and whether you can help contact that person.
- Encourage them to contact a health professional, therapist, or crisis service; offer practical help such as sitting with them while they make the call, if you are able.
- With your parent, where feasible, identify other people and professional supports who can be part of a safety plan. Mind describes plans that can include warning signs, coping steps, contacts, professional support, and ways to make the environment safer. Mind: Supporting someone after a suicide attempt.
- If you share a home, discuss household safety with treatment professionals. NAMI offers home-safety guidance for families, but that guidance is not a substitute for professional assessment; do not try to handle a hazard yourself if doing so could put you at risk. NAMI: Making the home safer during a mental-health crisis.
What if your parent says, “I can’t take this anymore”?
Take the distress seriously, but do not assume that one sentence by itself tells you whether danger is immediate. Ask what they mean and whether they are thinking of hurting themselves or have a plan. NAMI has published this phrase as language someone experiencing suicidal thoughts may use; assess the situation rather than treating the wording alone as a risk assessment. NAMI: How to Talk (and Listen) to Someone Experiencing Suicidal Thoughts.

How can you protect your own mental health?
Make your limit realistic and get support for yourself, too. You might decide when you are available, how long you can talk, and which other person or service you will contact if your parent needs more help than you can provide. You can care deeply without being available around the clock.
- Tell a trusted person what is happening so you are not isolated with the responsibility.
- Consider counseling or therapy for yourself, especially if the situation is affecting sleep, work, relationships, or your sense of safety.
- Look for caregiver or family peer support. NAMI describes peer support for family caregivers and a Family Caregiver HelpLine in its U.S. crisis guidance; check its page for relevant details. NAMI: What can I do if my loved one has a mental-health crisis?
- If you feel pressured, fear retaliation, or the home situation is unsafe, do not rely on a generic script. Plan the boundary with a counselor or trusted adult who understands your circumstances.
Mind also emphasizes caring for your own wellbeing while supporting someone else. Mind: How to help someone who feels suicidal.
