To set app time limits for a child in iOS 27, open Settings > Family > [child’s name] > Time Allowances > Add on the parent’s iPhone or iPad, then follow the onscreen instructions. You can set time by app category, coordinate allowances with a schedule, and keep selected apps and contacts available after other apps pause.
Check the iOS version on family devices
Apple’s support guides require iOS 27 or later for Time Allowances and the redesigned parental controls. For a child in a Family Sharing group, Apple says all family devices must be upgraded to the applicable version 27 or later. If Time Allowances is missing, check the versions on every family device and whether parental controls need to be reviewed after the upgrade.

Apple also documents redesigned parental controls on iPadOS 27 and macOS 27, with some features applying to watchOS 27. The interfaces and capabilities are not necessarily identical across those platforms. The setup path below is for a parent’s iPhone or iPad.

- On the parent’s device, open Settings.
- Tap Family, then tap the child’s name.
- Tap Time Allowances, then tap Add.
- Follow the onscreen instructions. Adjust the allowance for a category using its slider or the plus and minus buttons.
In Time Allowances, you can also set a total device allowance, add an allowance for apps that are not assigned to a category, or tap a schedule name to view or edit its allowances. Turn on Match Screen Time Schedule if you want allowances to apply during selected schedule windows.

Understand what the limits cover
Category allowances
Time Allowances can cover app categories such as Entertainment, Games, and Social Media. Apple says apps may be assigned according to their App Store category and social-media capabilities. You can add categories or change which apps belong to them, so review the category membership if a limit does not behave as you expect.
If a developer has linked an app to a matching website, the allowance applies to time spent in both. For apps that are not assigned to a category, add a separate allowance from the Time Allowances screen.

Category limits and the shared allowance
For Child Accounts, Apple provides age-based starting points for both the shared allowance across categories and allowances for individual categories. A child can use apps until reaching either the relevant category allowance or the shared allowance, and can request more time. Treat Apple’s age-based amounts as adjustable starting points, not a universal prescription or individualized clinical advice.

Coordinate allowances with school, home, or bedtime routines
A Time Allowance determines how much time is available; a Screen Time Schedule determines when app categories are available. You can combine them with Match Screen Time Schedule.

- Open Settings > Family > [child’s name] > Screen Time Schedule.
- Turn on Schedule, then tap Add Schedule.
- Select the days, then add a time window with its name, hours, and permitted app categories.
Apple’s built-in window examples include Before School, School, and After School. Custom windows can fit other routines or shortened school days. Once a schedule is set up, use its name in Time Allowances to view or edit allowances for that window.

In the child’s Family settings, tap Always Allowed to choose apps, people, or specific contacts that should remain accessible when other apps are paused after an allowance is met. Apple says FaceTime, Maps, Phone, and Messages are available by default. You can add exceptions or remove an app or contact later.

Make a temporary change
The child’s Family settings also provide quick actions to pause device use, allow unlimited time, or change the schedule. When device use is paused, most apps and notifications are blocked. Time used under an unlimited-use allowance does not count toward the child’s Time Allowance.
Choose an allowance that fits your child
Apple says its age-based starting guidance draws on expert research and is tailored to age. Its guidance points parents to factors including the child, the content, emotional regulation, what screen use may crowd out, and communication. Apple Support summarizes its guidance this way: “Research and expert guidance generally suggest that consistent management of screen time, especially as children get older, matters more than a single number.” Apple’s cited guidance does not provide a single daily limit for every child.
