Set a monthly hard limit in Claude Console at Settings > Billing > Spend limits. Choose Set limit or Adjust limit, enter an amount no higher than your organization’s current tier cap, and save. You can also set a lower limit for an individual workspace. These controls stop API requests when reached; they are not just warnings, so pair them with usage monitoring to contain costs without an avoidable service interruption.
Set an organization-wide monthly limit
- Sign in to the Claude Console for the organization whose API billing you want to control.
- Open Settings > Billing and find Spend limits.
- Select Set limit if no limit exists, or Adjust limit to change one already configured.
- Enter a monthly amount at or below the current usage-tier cap, then save.
The organization limit applies across the organization. It is a ceiling on API spending, not a target or forecast of what your usage will cost.

Choose the right scope: organization or workspace
Use the organization limit as the overall ceiling. If separate teams or projects share that organization, add a lower limit to the relevant workspace to constrain its spending independently. A workspace limit complements rather than replaces the organization-wide limit: both apply. This provides more targeted containment, but a workspace or organization hard stop can interrupt applications using that scope.
Understand tier caps and what happens at the limit
Anthropic’s 2026 Claude Platform documentation gives these monthly organization spend caps. They are provider tier ceilings; you may configure a lower amount in Billing.
#1 Best Overall
| Usage tier | Monthly organization cap |
|---|---|
| Start | $500 USD |
| Build | $1,000 USD |
| Scale | $200,000 USD |
| Custom | No monthly spend cap; limits are arranged with Anthropic’s account team. |
These values are documented by Anthropic and can change; confirm your tier and current cap in the Console. A self-set amount cannot exceed the cap for your current tier. Anthropic describes the tier caps as the maximum an organization can spend on the API each calendar month (Rate limits).
Reaching a configured organization or workspace limit stops requests. Anthropic documents a typical HTTP 400 response with invalid_request_error; the error message identifies the applicable limit and when access resumes. Claude Code workspace limits have a separate behavior and may return HTTP 429.
Reaching the tier cap is different: API usage pauses until 00:00 UTC on the first day of the next calendar month, unless Anthropic grants a higher limit sooner. The Messages API returns HTTP 429 with rate_limit_error and enforced_spend_limit_reached; Anthropic does not provide a retry-after header for this cap. Automatic retries do not bypass a spend limit.

Review usage in the Console’s Usage page. For programmatic auditing, Anthropic’s Admin API Messages usage report can break usage down by API key, workspace, model, service tier, and context window. Its report supports minute, hourly, or daily buckets within documented query limits. See the Admin API usage report reference.
Grouping by workspace or API key can help identify which project or credential is generating calls. The documentation reviewed describes monitoring and hard limits, but does not establish a pre-limit notification feature. Do not rely on an alert arriving before a cap is reached.

Anthropic bills for actual monthly API usage. Cost depends on the model and the input and output tokens processed; some server-side tools can add usage-based charges. Before deploying a workload, check the current Claude pricing and billing documentation for the model and features you plan to use. Rates and feature charges can change, so a static price estimate may become inaccurate.
- Choose a model appropriate to the task rather than using a more costly option by default.
- Check whether enabled tools or long-context modes add costs for your workload.
- Consider prompt caching and batching eligible work, both listed by Anthropic as cost-optimization measures.
- Review usage regularly and group it by workspace or API key when investigating unexpected activity.
- Set workspace limits for teams or projects that should have a tighter budget than the organization as a whole.
Tell a spend cap from other API errors
Check the status and error details before changing retry behavior or raising a limit. Anthropic distinguishes these cases in its API errors documentation and rate-limit documentation.

Quick Recap
| Response | What it indicates | What to check |
|---|---|---|
HTTP 400, invalid_request_error |
A configured organization or workspace spend limit was reached. | Identify the scope named in the error and check its limit and stated resumption time. |
HTTP 429, rate_limit_error, enforced_spend_limit_reached |
The tier’s monthly spend cap was reached. | Check the organization’s tier cap and calendar-month reset; this error has no retry-after header. |
| HTTP 429 with rate-limit information | An ordinary request or token rate limit was reached, rather than necessarily a spend cap. | Read the response’s rate-limit details and any retry-after value. |
HTTP 402, billing_error |
A billing or payment-information issue. | Check payment details in Claude Console. Cloud deployments may use the cloud provider’s separate billing path. |
