To start an automatic watch, wind it at the crown, then set its calendar and time using the positions and precautions specified for its movement. Crown direction, click positions and safe date-setting hours differ by caliber, so identify the watch and follow its manufacturer’s instructions rather than assuming one procedure fits all watches.
Before you start: identify the movement and crown
Look for the model or caliber on the caseback, tag or product documentation. Use the manufacturer’s instructions for that exact watch: Citizen supports lookup by caliber or model, and Rolex provides model-specific guides. The examples below show why checking matters; they are not universal instructions.

An automatic watch is powered by a mainspring. On the cited models, movement of the wearer’s arm winds that spring, and the crown can also be used to wind it manually. Seiko’s Cal. 6R15 manual describes its watch as “an automatic watch equipped with a manual winding mechanism.”

How to wind a stopped automatic watch
- Release a screw-lock crown if your watch has one. On Seiko Cal. 6R15, turn the crown counterclockwise to unscrew it before operating. Do not force the crown.
- Wind at the position specified in your manual. For Seiko Cal. 6R15, the crown remains at its normal position and turns slowly clockwise; turning it counterclockwise does not wind that movement. Citizen Cal. 0200 also specifies slow clockwise winding at position 0. Confirm the direction and method for your own caliber.
- Use the manual’s winding guidance. Citizen recommends 5 to 10 manual turns at the normal crown position to start its cited 8200/8210 caliber. For a different example, Citizen’s Cal. 0200 instructions say about 45 crown turns fully wind a stopped watch; that caliber then has about 60 hours of operation when fully wound. These amounts apply only to the named movements.
After setting, return the crown to its normal position. If it is a screw-lock type, press it in and screw it clockwise as directed by the manufacturer; stop if it does not engage smoothly.

How to set the calendar and time
Crown positions and calendar controls vary. On Seiko Cal. 6R15, the first click sets the date and the second sets the time. Citizen’s 8200/8210 instructions use a different numbered position scheme and describe day/date operations. Treat the manual for your exact caliber as authoritative.
- Move the crown to the calendar-setting position specified in your manual and set the date or day/date display, if fitted.
- Move the crown to the time-setting position and advance the hands. For Seiko Cal. 6R15, the manual says to advance the hands until the date changes to establish the a.m. period, then continue to the correct time.
- Return the crown to its normal position and secure a screw-lock crown if fitted.
Getting a.m./p.m. right matters on watches with a date: if the hands are set to the wrong 12-hour half, the date can change around noon instead of midnight.

When not to quick-set the date
Calendar mechanisms can be engaged during particular hours, and the caution window is movement-specific. Do not quick-set the date during the interval stated in your watch’s manual. The cited instructions differ:

How much reserve to expect
Power reserve is the time a fully wound watch can run without further winding. The cited figures are caliber-specific, not a promise for every automatic watch.

If the crown or watch does not behave as expected
- Check that you are using the right crown position and procedure for the exact model or caliber.
- Do not force a crown that will not turn, press in or screw down as expected.
- Follow the manufacturer’s warning about operating the crown when the watch is wet.
- If the crown or movement still does not behave as the manual describes, consult a qualified watchmaker or the manufacturer’s authorized service center.
