Set the Open Graph image in the social-image field of your SEO plugin, not only in WordPress’s Featured image box. In Yoast SEO, enable Open Graph data, then choose a Facebook/social image while editing each post or page. If no custom social image is set, Yoast can fall back to the featured image, an image in the content, and configured defaults.
What an Open Graph image does
Open Graph (OG) tags are metadata in a page’s <head>. Social and other services read values such as og:title, og:description, og:url and og:image to build a link preview. Yoast identifies Facebook, Pinterest, LinkedIn, WhatsApp and Google among the services that consume this data.
The image displayed in a preview is therefore not guaranteed to be WordPress’s Featured image. An SEO plugin, theme or social plugin may emit its own og:image, and a plugin’s dedicated social-image field can have higher priority than the Featured image.
How image selection works in Yoast SEO
| Priority | Image source | When it is used |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Per-post or per-page social/Facebook image | Use this when a particular share needs a different image. |
| 2 | Featured image | Used when no custom social image is set and a Featured image exists. |
| 3 | Prominent image in the content | Used when the earlier sources are unavailable. |
| 4 | Template or social default | A configured default for a content type or template. |
| 5 | Sitewide default image | The final fallback when the page has no more specific image. |
This order means that changing a Featured image may not change the preview if a custom social image is already saved, or if another plugin is outputting its own tags.
Enable Open Graph data in Yoast SEO
- Sign in to WordPress with an account that can change SEO settings.
- Open WordPress Dashboard → Yoast SEO → Settings → Site features → Social sharing.
- Turn Open Graph data on.
- Click Save changes.
Yoast says this feature is enabled by default, but confirm the switch in your installation because settings can differ after a migration, plugin reset or configuration change.
Set an image for one post or page
- Open the post or page in the WordPress editor.
- Find the Yoast SEO panel. Its exact position depends on whether you use the block editor or the Classic Editor.
- Open the social-sharing or Facebook preview section.
- Choose the image control, upload or select the image you want social networks to use, and save the post or page.
The social-image field is the highest-priority source in Yoast’s documented hierarchy. It is useful for an article whose social artwork differs from its editorial Featured image, such as a product listing that needs a price graphic or a news post that needs a breaking-news card.
If the field is empty, confirm that the post has a Featured image. If it does not, check whether the first prominent image in the article is suitable before relying on a fallback.
Set a sitewide fallback image
- In the WordPress Dashboard, open SEO → Social → Facebook.
- Find Default image.
- Upload or select the image, then save the settings.
Yoast’s interface labels can vary by release; the setting may also be described as a social default in a template. This image is a fallback. It does not replace a custom social image or a Featured image that has already been selected for an individual page.

Rank Math and the WordPress.org Open Graph plugin have their own controls and fallback behavior. Use the social-image field provided by the plugin that is actually generating your page’s OG tags. Do not assume that the Yoast path exists or that a Featured image always wins.
Rank #2
The WordPress.org Open Graph plugin documents this order: Featured image, images in the content, and attached images, followed by the site icon, custom logo or header image. It also states that, while active, it disables Jetpack’s Open Graph output to avoid duplicates.
Before changing settings, identify which component emits the tags:
- Check your SEO plugin’s social settings and per-page panel.
- Check theme options for social metadata.
- Check whether a second social or Open Graph plugin is active.
Keep one active emitter. Yoast warns: “Duplicate Open Graph tags can cause social media sites to display incorrect titles, descriptions, or images.”
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Verify the image in the page output
- Open the published page in a browser, not only the editor preview.
- View the HTML source and search for
og:image. - Confirm that the URL in the tag is the image you intended and that only one primary
og:imagevalue is being emitted by your SEO setup. - Also inspect
og:title,og:descriptionandog:urlso you know the same page is being shared.
If the HTML contains the correct URL but a social preview still shows an older image, the external service may be using a cached fetch. Refreshing the page metadata first is the important diagnostic step; cache-refresh procedures differ by platform and can change over time.
Developer overrides with filters
For a rule that cannot be maintained in the editor, Yoast exposes the wpseo_opengraph_image filter. It replaces an existing image value when your callback returns a new URL; it does not create an image when the normal hierarchy has produced no value.
Rank #3
<?php
add_filter( 'wpseo_opengraph_image', function ( $image ) {
if ( is_singular( 'listing' ) ) {
return 'https://example.com/wp-content/uploads/listing-share.jpg';
}
return $image;
} );
Place custom PHP in a child theme or a site-specific plugin so a theme update does not remove it. Replace the example post type and image URL with values that exist on your site. Test the resulting page source after publishing.
Rank Math also documents developer filters for changing image output and fallback behavior. Use the hooks for the plugin that owns the tags; a filter for one SEO plugin will not control tags emitted by another.

Image file and layout decisions
No single current dimension or format is a universal Open Graph requirement across every destination. A WordPress support answer recommends an image near 1200 × 630 pixels and JPEG, GIF or PNG, but that is community guidance rather than an official cross-platform rule. Treat it as a practical starting point, and check the current specification for the platform that matters most to your audience.
- Keep important text and logos away from the edges so different preview crops do not remove them.
- Use a public, stable image URL; a login-protected or short-lived URL cannot be fetched reliably by crawlers.
- Compress large files so the page and crawler can retrieve them quickly, while keeping text legible.
- Use a distinct image per article when the subject matters more than brand consistency; reserve the sitewide default for pages without a better asset.
Troubleshooting wrong or missing images
The Featured image appears instead of my chosen artwork
Open the post’s Yoast social/Facebook image control and check whether an older custom image is saved there. A custom value outranks the Featured image. If the field is blank, inspect the source for another plugin’s og:image.
The site logo appears on every share
Look for a theme or second plugin emitting a fallback image. Disable Open Graph output in one of the competing components, then set the correct default in the remaining emitter. If you use the WordPress.org Open Graph plugin, its documented fallback can reach the site icon, custom logo or header image when no content image exists.
Rank #4
There are two or more og:image tags
Duplicate output can lead to incorrect titles, descriptions or images. Keep one source of Open Graph metadata: normally your SEO plugin, unless your theme or another plugin is deliberately configured to own it.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThe page source has no image tag
Confirm that Open Graph data is enabled, that the page is publicly reachable, and that the selected image has been saved. If a developer filter is in use, remember that Yoast’s wpseo_opengraph_image filter cannot create a value from nothing; it only replaces an existing one.
A warning asks for fb:app_id
Yoast says this warning is not a blocker for displaying shared content and recommends ignoring it for this purpose. It does not explain a wrong og:image value.
The HTML is correct but the preview is old
Recheck the exact URL being shared, including redirects and query strings. If its current source contains the intended image, the destination service has likely cached an earlier fetch. Use that service’s current cache-refresh process rather than changing WordPress settings repeatedly.

If you need a fresh visual of a page to use as a social asset, ScreenshotNeo can capture the page, after which you can upload the returned image to the WordPress Media Library and select it in the Yoast social-image field. It is a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers. Before capture it can accept the cookie or consent banner and remove more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets, with each step switchable. Bot checks, CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing result. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor and other MCP clients.
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for authentication and options. A basic capture is one GET request:
Best Value
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://example.com -o shot.webp
import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://example.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://example.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
You can request PNG, JPEG or WebP; full-page capture, a CSS-selected element, dark mode, device presets, retina scale, custom CSS or JavaScript, waits, blocked resources, cookies, headers, geolocation, resizing, caching and signed links are available options. For a social card, capture the page or a specific element, inspect the result, upload the file to WordPress, and then set it as the per-page social image.
ScreenshotNeo includes 1,000 screenshots per month free with no card. Paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots; every feature is available on every plan. Create a free ScreenshotNeo account when you are ready to make the capture.
Practical checklist
- Open Graph data is enabled in the SEO plugin that owns your metadata.
- The intended per-page image is saved in that plugin’s social-image field.
- A Featured image or sitewide default exists for pages without custom artwork.
- Only one plugin or theme emits the Open Graph tags.
- The published HTML contains the expected
og:imageURL. - The image URL is public, stable and suitable for the destinations where links are shared.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can one WordPress site use different Open Graph images for different posts?
Yes. Set a separate image in the SEO plugin’s social/Facebook panel for each post or page; that value takes precedence over the Featured image and sitewide fallback.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWindows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallDo I need a Facebook app ID for the image to appear?
No. Yoast states that the fb:app_id warning is not required for shared content to display, so it does not prevent an Open Graph image from being used.
The Bottom Line
Use the plugin’s dedicated social-image field for precise control, configure a sitewide default for pages without artwork, and verify the published og:image tag while ensuring only one component emits Open Graph metadata.
