The quickest way to capture part of a PDF is to drag a rectangular screen selection around the visible area. On Windows 10 or 11, press Windows+Shift+S, choose Rectangle, and drag. On a Mac, press Shift-Command-4 and drag, or use Preview’s File > Take Screenshot > From Selection. If the PDF is open in Adobe Acrobat Reader, Edit > More > Take A Snapshot copies the selected area directly to the clipboard.
Choose the method that matches your goal
All three methods capture what is visibly rendered on screen. They do not automatically capture a page that is below the current scroll position, and they do not turn a scanned page into editable text. Pick the workflow below based on your computer and where you want the result to go.

Capture a PDF region in Windows 10 or 11
1. Put the exact content on screen
- Open the PDF in your browser, a PDF reader, or Acrobat.
- Zoom until the text, chart, or illustration is legible.
- Scroll so the complete region you want is visible. If it crosses a page break or extends below the window, capture it in multiple selections.
2. Start a rectangular snip
- Press Windows logo key + Shift + S.
- When the capture overlay appears, select Rectangle. Snipping Tool also offers freeform, window, and full-screen modes, but Rectangle gives the most predictable crop for a PDF.
- Drag from one corner of the PDF region to the opposite corner, then release the mouse or trackpad.
3. Review, annotate, and save
The capture is copied into Snipping Tool. Use its markup tools if you need to highlight a line, draw an arrow, or add a note. You can crop again, use available text actions such as OCR, copy the image with Ctrl+C, or save it with Ctrl+S. Saving immediately avoids losing the capture when you close the notification or open another snip.
Include a menu or other temporary interface
If the PDF viewer’s toolbar or a transient menu must appear in the image, open Snipping Tool’s delay option before selecting the region. The delay gives you time to open the menu and leave the final screen unchanged while the capture occurs.

Capture part of a PDF on a Mac
Use the system-wide selection shortcut
- Open the PDF and position the page so the desired area is visible.
- Press Shift-Command-4. The pointer changes to a crosshair.
- Drag across the region and release. macOS saves the image to the desktop by default unless you changed Screenshot settings.
Use the thumbnail that appears after capture to mark up or share the image. If you need to change the destination or related behavior, press Shift-Command-5 to open the Screenshot app (available on macOS Mojave 10.14 and later) and review its options.
Use Preview’s PDF-aware command
- Open the file in Preview.
- Choose File > Take Screenshot > From Selection.
- Drag across the PDF area and release.
- Preview opens the result as an image, which you can mark up or save.
Preview is useful when you want the capture to move directly into a markup workflow instead of managing a desktop screenshot afterward.
Use Adobe Acrobat Reader’s Snapshot tool
Copy a selected PDF area
- Open the PDF in Acrobat Reader.
- If the document is protected, check whether copying is permitted in the document’s security settings. A restriction can prevent Snapshot or clipboard copying.
- Choose Edit > More > Take A Snapshot.
- Drag a rectangle around the required text or graphic.
- Switch to the destination application and paste. Acrobat’s Snapshot command copies the selected area as an image rather than as editable PDF objects.
This is the most PDF-specific route when the file is already open in Acrobat. It avoids a system-wide overlay and sends the selected rectangle directly to the clipboard.

Make the screenshot readable and useful
Set zoom before selecting
A small on-screen selection produces a small raster image. Increase PDF zoom until fine text is readable, then capture only the necessary region. If the selection becomes too large for the available screen, take two overlapping captures and join them in an image editor.
Remove interface clutter
Hide browser tabs, toolbars, side panels, and notification banners before dragging. A clean background makes the result easier to paste into documentation or a presentation.
Preserve context when it matters
For a chart or quotation, include enough of the page heading, figure label, or page number to identify it. For a private document, check the crop for names, account numbers, or other information you did not intend to share.
Know when a screenshot is the wrong format
- Use the original PDF when recipients need selectable text, searchable content, links, or print-quality vectors.
- Use OCR when the source is a scan and you need text rather than a picture.
- Use a full-page export when the content extends beyond one screen; a rectangular screenshot cannot include hidden scroll areas.
Troubleshooting common failures
The shortcut does nothing on Windows
Make sure the Windows key is not disabled by a keyboard utility or remote-desktop policy. Open Snipping Tool from the Start menu as a test, then use its New button. If the app is missing or unresponsive, install pending Windows updates and restart it.

The Mac capture is saved somewhere unexpected
Press Shift-Command-5 and inspect Options for the selected save location. A capture may also remain temporarily as a thumbnail; click it before it disappears if you need immediate markup.

Increase the PDF zoom before capturing, enlarge the application window, and avoid stretching the image after saving. For a long passage, make several readable crops instead of one tiny full-page image.
The selection includes the wrong area
Cancel and repeat the drag from a clear corner. On Windows, pressing Esc cancels an active snip. On macOS, release only after the crosshair encloses the intended rectangle; start again if the drag began on a toolbar or outside the PDF.

Acrobat Snapshot will not copy
Review the PDF’s security permissions. The author may have disabled copying. In that case, ask the document owner for an unrestricted copy or use the permitted system screenshot method for your own authorized use. Do not bypass access controls.
The PDF is blank, black, or protected by a viewer
Wait for the page to finish rendering, scroll slightly, or reopen it in a supported PDF viewer. If the document requires a password, sign in normally before capturing. A screenshot cannot recover content that the viewer never rendered.

Can I capture a section that spans two PDF pages in one screenshot?
Not with a rectangular screen selection. Capture each visible page section separately, then combine the images or export the relevant pages from the PDF.
Will a screenshot preserve clickable links in a PDF?
No. A screenshot is a raster image; links, selectable text, bookmarks, and embedded document behavior are not retained.
Is it legal to screenshot a copyrighted PDF?
That depends on the document license, your jurisdiction, and how you use the image. Follow the owner’s permissions and avoid redistributing restricted content.
What file format should I use when sharing the crop?
PNG is generally best for small text and line art; JPEG is smaller for photographic pages. Use the format required by the destination application.
