In Yoast SEO, enable Open Graph metadata, edit the product, open the Social tab, and choose the image. The documented setup is general; the official sources reviewed do not establish an India-specific difference.
Set the product image in WooCommerce
- In WordPress admin, open Products and edit the product.
- In the product image area, select an image from the Media Library or upload one. This is the main product image.
- If you want additional images available, add them separately under Product gallery. The main image and gallery images are distinct WooCommerce controls; see WooCommerce’s product images and galleries documentation.
- Save or update the product.
Setting the WooCommerce product image does not guarantee that every SEO plugin configuration will use it as the page’s Open Graph image. Use the social-image control in the active SEO plugin when you need to specify exactly what social services should receive.

Set a product-specific Open Graph image in Yoast
- Confirm that Open Graph metadata is enabled in Yoast SEO.
- Edit the WooCommerce product in WordPress admin.
- Open Yoast’s Social tab and set the intended image. The same controls let you override the social title and description.
- Update the product, then inspect the rendered page metadata or a sharing preview for that product URL.
Yoast documents these product-level social controls in its guide to customizing Facebook appearance with Open Graph meta tags. They set page-level social metadata, rather than merely changing which image is sent to a separate product catalog.
What happens when you do not set a custom image?
Yoast describes an image-selection hierarchy for Open Graph output: a user-defined Facebook image is preferred, followed by a featured image for posts, a prominent image in page content, a product-gallery image when Yoast WooCommerce SEO is installed, and configured social default images. The product-gallery fallback is specific to the Yoast WooCommerce SEO extension, not a universal WooCommerce behavior. See the Yoast OpenGraph functional specification.

Yoast WooCommerce SEO also documents product-specific Open Graph data such as product type and availability; for simple products it documents price amount and currency tags. Those tags are separate from selecting the image. Details are in Yoast’s OpenGraph extensions and add-ons specification.
Do not confuse catalog image settings with page Open Graph tags
Meta for WooCommerce includes a product image choice for Facebook catalog synchronization: use the WooCommerce image or specify a custom image URL. That setting concerns catalog sync. Its documentation does not establish that changing it modifies the product page’s HTML og:image tag. If your goal is the preview when someone shares the product URL, check the page’s Open Graph metadata and the social controls provided by your SEO plugin. See Meta for WooCommerce documentation.

If you use another SEO plugin
Use the plugin that already manages metadata on your store, and look for its product-level social or Open Graph image settings. Rank Math documents Open Graph controls and filters, including product-related behavior, but the documentation reviewed does not provide a current product-editor walkthrough comparable to Yoast’s help page. See Rank Math’s OpenGraph documentation. Avoid running multiple plugins or theme features that independently emit Open Graph tags unless you know which output takes precedence.

- Open the exact public product URL you intend to share and inspect its rendered metadata, especially
og:image. Check that it points to the expected image and that the URL is accessible. - If the metadata is wrong, confirm the product-level social image override, the WooCommerce main image, and the active plugin’s Open Graph settings.
- Check whether a theme or another plugin is also outputting Open Graph tags. Conflicting tags can make the result ambiguous; keep a single source of output where possible.
- If the page metadata is correct but a social service still displays an older preview, the service may be showing cached data. Recheck or refresh the preview using that service’s available tools. The official documentation cited here does not establish a universal cache duration or guarantee immediate refresh.
There is no universal image dimension or refresh interval established by the sources cited here for every social platform. Use the current guidance for the specific service where your customers share links, and verify the actual product URL preview rather than assuming one size or cache rule applies everywhere.
