Adobe documents this directly for Adobe Commerce Storefront’s metadata-table workflow. For a conventional Magento theme, Adobe documents product image roles and theme image configuration, but not a universal setting that automatically maps a product image to og:image. Check the page’s rendered HTML, then add or correct the tag through the metadata mechanism your storefront actually uses.
Choose the implementation for your storefront

Set it in Adobe Commerce Storefront
- Open the Storefront metadata table used by the product page.
- Add an
og:imageproperty and set its value to the full URL of the intended image, for examplehttps://store.example.com/media/catalog/product/p/r/product-front.jpg. - Use the same metadata system for related social properties such as
og:type,og:title, andog:descriptionif the page needs them. - Inspect the rendered product page’s
<head>and confirm the finalog:imagevalue is the URL you entered.
The documented metadata-table workflow is specific to Adobe Commerce Storefront. A custom storefront or a product page that does not use that metadata table may have a different data path; confirm the actual output rather than assuming the table controls every Magento installation.

Set it in a conventional Magento theme or custom implementation
Check the product image assignment first
In the product’s image configuration, identify the intended asset and its roles. Adobe describes Base as the main image on the product detail page; Small Image, Thumbnail, and Swatch have separate uses. You can assign multiple images, change their order, and make role or visibility changes at store-view scope. Check the relevant store view if the asset differs between storefronts. These assignments inform storefront image handling, but they do not guarantee that a particular theme or module uses the Base image for og:image. See Manage product images and videos.

Find the metadata output point
- Open a live product page and inspect its rendered HTML, including the document’s
<head>. Search forproperty="og:image". - If a tag exists, check whether it points to the intended product image. If it is absent or wrong, identify which theme, module, or rendering layer is producing page metadata.
- Implement the metadata there using the chosen product image’s absolute, public URL. Preserve product-specific behavior if the storefront renders different products or store views dynamically.
- Inspect the rendered HTML again after the change. Confirm there is one effective
og:imagevalue and that it is the intended URL.
Magento theme image types and their properties are configured in <theme_dir>/etc/view.xml, under <media><images module="Magento_Catalog">...</images></media>. Adobe explains that image IDs identify storefront image types and that properties can include dimensions. This can matter when customizing product image presentation, but it is not documentation of a universal Open Graph image selector. See Configure Theme Properties.

Consider an extension only after checking compatibility
The Adobe Commerce Marketplace listing for Apptrian Open Graph Meta Tags describes generating Open Graph metadata from Magento data and using the full-size primary product image for a product’s og:image. Treat that as the listing’s description, not as a guarantee for every installation. Before adopting an extension, check support for your Commerce version, theme or headless setup, control over image selection, and maintenance status.
Make sure the image is deliverable and appropriate
- Use a full URL, not a relative path, in
og:image. Adobe’s Storefront metadata documentation specifies the full URL for this property. - Check the URL directly in a browser and verify it resolves to the intended image without requiring an authenticated session. A tag can be correct while the image is unavailable to an external sharing crawler.
- Check the actual storefront and relevant store view. Product image role assignments can vary by store view.
- Distinguish the selected source image from its display rendition. Theme image dimensions and resizing affect image presentation; they do not prove which asset the metadata tag references.
- Adobe’s product image configuration documentation lists default maximum dimensions of 1920 × 1200 pixels and suggests JPG quality of 80–90% for reducing file size while retaining quality. These are Adobe Commerce upload configuration guidance, not universal Open Graph or social-platform requirements. See Product image configuration.
Validate the change without confusing visual and metadata checks
The primary check is the rendered HTML: confirm the product page emits the intended og:image value. Separately, check that the image URL resolves as intended and consider deployment-specific cache, CDN, and crawler behavior. A screenshot can help you visually inspect the product page, but it does not establish what the page’s Open Graph tag contains.

Frequently asked questions
Does setting Base image automatically set og:image?
Not necessarily. Base is Adobe’s documented main product-detail image role, but the reviewed role documentation does not promise that every theme or module uses it for Open Graph metadata.
Will the image shown in Google results match og:image?
Not guaranteed. This guide covers the product page’s Open Graph metadata; it does not establish how a search engine selects images for its results.
