Set the dedicated server’s welcome_message value in server_config.sii, save it while the server is stopped, then restart the server. Use quotation marks and keep the message within SCS’s 127-character limit. The same setting and process apply to Euro Truck Simulator 2 (ETS2) and American Truck Simulator (ATS).

What the welcome message controls
welcome_message is a dedicated-server session setting. It is not a profile option for ordinary single-player play and does not belong in a player’s personal game settings. When configured on an ETS2 or ATS dedicated server, the text is presented to players through in-game chat when they connect, according to the server configuration references and the documented hosting workflow.

You therefore do not need a different parameter name for each game: look for welcome_message in the active server configuration for either title.
The setting is useful for a short greeting, a rules reminder, a Discord or voice-channel instruction, or a note about the server’s driving style. It should complement your full rules page rather than attempt to contain every rule. The technical limit is 127 characters, so write for quick reading in chat.

Before you edit: identify the active server
Dedicated-server software
Install or open the SCS dedicated-server tool for the game you operate. SCS publishes separate dedicated-server tools for ETS2 and ATS and documents the shared server configuration approach. Make sure you are working on the server instance players actually join; a second test installation can have a different configuration file and display a different result.
Managed hosting panel
If a provider gives you a web control panel, use that panel’s server-configuration editor. The documented path in one provider workflow is Settings > Server Config. A panel may generate or overwrite local files, so editing a downloaded copy can have no effect on the live instance.
Self-hosted installation
For a server you run directly, locate server_config.sii in the game or server home directory. The exact filesystem location depends on how you installed the dedicated-server tool and which operating system or service wrapper you use. The important distinction is that this must be the configuration file loaded by the running server, not a similarly named backup or client-side file.
Stop the process first
Stop the dedicated server before changing the setting. A running process can retain the old value, rewrite the file on shutdown, or prevent your editor from saving the intended contents. Record the current value or make a backup before editing so you can restore it if another configuration entry is accidentally changed.

Set the message in server_config.sii
- Stop the server. Use the host panel’s Stop control or stop the service/process you use for self-hosting. Wait until the panel reports that it is offline or the process has exited.
- Open the active configuration. In a panel, choose Settings > Server Config. On a self-hosted machine, open the live
server_config.siiwith a plain-text editor. - Find the parameter. Search for
welcome_message. A newly created configuration commonly contains an empty value:
welcome_message: ""- Replace only the value. Keep the parameter name, colon, spacing style and quotation marks intact. For example:
welcome_message: "Welcome drivers! Follow the posted rules and have a safe trip."- Check the length. SCS’s configuration reference sets the welcome-message maximum at 127 characters. Count the complete text inside the quotation marks, including spaces and punctuation, and shorten it if necessary.
- Save the configuration. Confirm that the editor saved the file as plain text and did not append a second extension such as
.txt. In a panel, use its Save or Apply control and wait for the success confirmation. - Start or restart the server. A restart is required for the running instance to reload the value. The documented hosting sequence is stop, edit, save, and start.
Do not place line breaks inside the quoted value. Keep the greeting on one configuration line unless your server’s own documentation explicitly supports another format. If your message needs an apostrophe, normal punctuation is generally fine; the critical syntax requirement documented for this setting is that the value remains enclosed in quotation marks.
Use a managed hosting panel correctly
A panel removes the need to locate the file manually, but it does not remove the reload requirement. Open the server’s configuration editor rather than a general chat or MOTD field unless the panel explicitly maps that field to welcome_message.

- Open the panel for the exact ETS2 or ATS instance that players join.
- Stop the server from the panel.
- Go to Settings > Server Config or the equivalent configuration page supplied by your host.
- Locate
welcome_messageand enter the text between quotation marks if the editor displays the raw SII format. If the panel presents a labeled text box, use its field but still observe the 127-character limit. - Save the change and wait for the panel to finish writing the configuration.
- Start the server and test with a player account.
Panel labels and navigation can change when a provider updates its control software. If the named path is no longer present, use the panel’s server-configuration or SII-file editor and verify that the resulting file contains the expected welcome_message entry. Avoid maintaining a competing local copy that the panel could overwrite during a restart or update.

The lobby name and description limits apply to their respective fields, not as extra space for the welcome message. Keep each value within its own limit.

Messages that fit the job
- Greeting: “Welcome drivers! Follow the posted rules and have a safe trip.”
- Operating style: “Convoy server: keep safe distances, use signals, and respect speed limits.”
- Support direction: “Connection issue? Check the pinned rules before reconnecting or contact a moderator.”
These examples are deliberately short. A welcome line is shown in chat, so put the action players need first and avoid a long preamble. If your rules, schedule or contact details change frequently, point players to the maintained rules location rather than embedding a fragile date or schedule in the server file.
Confirm that players can see it
After the restart, join the server with a test account or ask another player to connect. The expected behavior documented by the provider and configuration references is that the message appears in in-game chat. This is a configuration check, not proof that every client, mod combination or network condition will display it identically.

- Watch the chat as the connection completes; do not rely only on a lobby preview.
- Compare the displayed wording with the saved value, including punctuation and spacing.
- If you changed more than one server, test each instance separately so a successful result is not attributed to the wrong configuration.
Keep a record of the final message and the date you changed it. That makes later troubleshooting easier when a hosting migration, restore or configuration update replaces the file.
Troubleshoot a missing or rejected message
The message does not appear at all
- Check the active file: Confirm that the path and server instance match the one players joined. A local copy, backup or different game installation will not affect the live server.
- Check the exact key: The entry must be
welcome_message. Do not substitute a profile setting or an unrelated lobby field. - Check quotation marks: The value must remain inside quotes, for example
welcome_message: "Your text". - Check the save: Reopen the file or panel editor after saving and verify that your text is still present.
- Restart the server: Stop and start it after the save. Editing while it is running does not guarantee that the process reloads the value.
- Check the connection test: Join the same instance whose configuration you edited and look in in-game chat.
The configuration is rejected or the text is cut off
Shorten the message to below the documented 127-character maximum. Count spaces, punctuation and every character in the value. Also check that a panel has not added formatting or copied hidden line breaks. The SCS Modding Wiki lists 63-character limits for the lobby name and lobby description, so trim those fields independently if the server reports an error there.

The panel keeps reverting the value
Use the panel’s own editor and save while the server is stopped. A provider may regenerate server_config.sii from panel data during startup. If the value disappears again, compare the panel field with the raw file and ask the provider which field is authoritative for that installation.

Stop the server, restore the intended value, save it, and start the server again. Players already connected may not receive a newly loaded welcome line; test with a fresh connection after the restart.
There are multiple configuration files
Dedicated-server folders can contain backups, templates or files for different profiles. Identify the file referenced by the launch configuration or service definition, then make a small, reversible change and restart to confirm that it is the active one. Keep backups outside the generated configuration area if the host automatically replaces files.

For containerized deployments, the LsHallo project exposes an ETS_SERVER_WELCOME_MESSAGE environment variable and supports a configurable server_config.sii path. That allows an image or deployment system to inject the greeting without manually editing a running container.
- Set the environment variable in the deployment definition used to create the server.
- Ensure the variable is applied to the container that runs the ETS2 or ATS dedicated server, not only to a management container.
- Confirm the configured SII path points to the file the server process reads.
- Redeploy or restart the container so the generated configuration is loaded.
- Connect with a test account and verify the chat output after the new container is healthy.
Automation does not change the SCS limit or quoting requirement. Treat the environment value as configuration data, keep it under 127 characters, and preserve any escaping rules required by your deployment format. Store the deployment definition in version control so a rebuild does not silently restore an older greeting.
Self-hosting versus managed hosting
Both approaches ultimately set the same SII parameter. The practical difference is who controls the file, restart process and maintenance work.

Choose the workflow that matches your operational control. The welcome-message syntax itself does not change between the two.
Keep the rest of the server configuration safe
Edit only the value you intend to change. Dedicated-server configuration also controls access and administration, so an accidental edit can affect more than the greeting. SCS Software wrote in its 2022 official blog:
“When setting up a dedicated ETS2 or ATS server, it is also important to create a list of ‘known players’ in the config file, this will give the listed player admin controls, which will provide them with the option to moderate players on the server.”

That administrative setting is separate from welcome_message, but it illustrates why a backup and a narrow edit matter. Do not paste a complete configuration from another server merely to add a greeting; preserve your existing ports, access rules, player lists and gameplay settings.
- Back up the configuration before each planned change.
- Use a plain-text editor that does not silently convert punctuation or encoding.
- After saving, inspect the nearby entries for accidental deletions or added quotation marks.
- Restart during a maintenance window if players are online.
- Document who changed the message and why, especially when several administrators manage the server.
A repeatable change checklist
- Identify whether the server is ETS2 or ATS and confirm the live instance.
- Back up the current configuration.
- Stop the server completely.
- Open the panel’s Server Config editor or the active
server_config.sii. - Find
welcome_message. - Enter one quoted line and keep it under 127 characters.
- Save, then reopen the configuration to verify the value persisted.
- Start or restart the server.
- Join with a test account and confirm the text appears in in-game chat.
- If it fails, check the active path, quotation marks, save result, character count and restart status in that order.
Following those checks gives ETS2 and ATS the configuration they expect while avoiding the most common causes of an apparently missing welcome message.
