browser_take_screenshot has no documented screenshot-specific timeout argument. Set the timeout for the phase that is actually slow: navigation, a browser action before capture, or work settling after an action. If the page is ready but the MCP call itself is cut off, investigate the MCP client, IDE, or proxy deadline instead; changing a Playwright server timeout does not necessarily change that external limit.
Choose the timeout for the slow phase
Playwright MCP documents separate settings for navigation, browser actions, post-action settling, and connecting to a Chrome DevTools Protocol (CDP) endpoint. These are not interchangeable, and none is a timeout parameter on the screenshot call itself. The documented defaults and meanings are:

These options and defaults are documented in the Playwright MCP configuration reference. Change only the setting that matches the failing phase. For instance, increasing the settle timeout will not make a slow navigation allowance longer.

Increase the navigation timeout
If navigation to the page is what exceeds its allowance, pass a larger value in milliseconds when launching the Playwright MCP server. This example sets it to two minutes:

What browser_take_screenshot can and cannot time out
The documented screenshot tool accepts target, type, filename, fullPage, and scale. It captures the viewport, a target element, or the full scrollable page; fullPage cannot be combined with a target element. The screenshot reference does not list a timeout argument, so adding a guessed property such as timeout is not a documented way to extend capture time. The reviewed Playwright MCP documentation does not specify one universal setting for those external request deadlines. Identify which host is enforcing the cutoff and adjust its applicable tool-call or request limit; raising a server-side navigation timeout alone may not help.

Wait for known content before taking the screenshot
If the screenshot is being taken before a particular element appears, use Playwright MCP’s documented browser_wait_for tool before capture. Its optional time argument is in seconds and is capped at 30 seconds. This is an explicit wait step, not a screenshot timeout override. The official Playwright MCP repository documents the wait tool and screenshot schema.
Troubleshoot a timeout by symptom
- The page never finishes loading: raise
timeout-navigation(or its environment variable) if the navigation itself is slow. Its documented default is 60000 ms. - A click or other action before capture expires: check
timeout-action; its documented default is 5000 ms. - The page changes after a click and needs time to settle: adjust
timeout-settle, whose documented default is 500 ms. This is a post-action wait, not a cap on screenshot rendering. - The browser cannot connect to Chrome over CDP: review
cdp-timeoutorPLAYWRIGHT_MCP_CDP_TIMEOUT. This governs the CDP connection, not a screenshot operation. - The page is ready, then the MCP request is cut off: inspect the client, IDE, or proxy deadline. The screenshot tool has no documented timeout argument, and server timeout settings do not automatically extend a host’s request deadline.
- A known element is missing when capture starts: wait for it with
browser_wait_for, keeping its documented 30-second maximum in mind.
