What the Unturned server icon controls
The Icon value controls the image displayed in the server information menu. It is separate from the server name, description, map, and other browser settings. Unturned reads the value from the server configuration, so changing an image on your computer without changing the configuration does not update the listing.

The browser configuration also has a Thumbnail value. The icon and thumbnail are related, but they are not the same field. If you want both images to match, enter the appropriate URL in each field. If you only need the normal server information image, change Icon and leave Thumbnail as it is.
Before you edit anything
- Stop the dedicated server. Editing while the process is running can be overwritten when the server saves its settings or shuts down.
- Identify the correct server folder. A host can have several Unturned instances, and each instance has its own folder under
Servers. - Prepare a publicly reachable image URL. The value is used as a web address, not as a path to an image stored only on your PC.
- Make a backup of the configuration file. Copy the original file somewhere outside the server folder before changing it. A backup gives you a quick way to undo a syntax error or an unwanted change.
If you manage the server through a hosting panel, use its Stop, Shut Down, or Offline control and wait until the status confirms that the process has ended. If you run the server yourself, close the dedicated-server process normally and verify that it is no longer running before opening the file.

Find the server configuration file
The dedicated-server location documented by the Unturned community wiki is:

{UNTURNED} means the directory where your Unturned installation or server files are stored. Replace (Server name) with the folder name of the instance you want to change. On a control-panel host, the same hierarchy may appear in a file manager rather than as a Windows path; open the server’s Servers directory and then its named server folder.
Do not edit a similarly named file in a different profile, a backup directory, or a client installation. If several server folders exist, check the name shown in your startup command or hosting panel and select that matching folder.
Open the Browser section
Open config.json in a plain-text or code editor. Avoid a word processor, because it can add formatting characters that invalidate JSON. Search for the top-level object named Browser. The Icon and Thumbnail entries are inside that object, next to the other browser settings.

Replace the text between the quotes after "Icon" with a direct image address:

A page that displays an image, an album page, a sharing page, or a URL that requires a login is not the same as a direct image URL. Direct links commonly end in .png or .jpg, which makes the expected file type clear.
When using Imgur, change the normal imgur.com host to i.imgur.com and use the resulting file URL. For example, an image page that begins with https://imgur.com/ needs to be converted to the direct image host before it is placed in the configuration. Confirm that the final address opens the image itself in a browser and that it ends in .png or .jpg.
Do not enter a local filename such as Icon.png, a Windows path such as C:ImagesIcon.png, or a URL to a file that is private to your computer. The available documentation consistently demonstrates a web URL for this field. Whether a local file placed in the server directory is accepted is not established, so a public direct URL is the dependable approach.
Choose an image size that is likely to work
Published recommendations do not agree on one required pixel size. The official Unturned Wiki identifies a 64 × 64 PNG as the ideal icon and a 32 × 32 PNG as the ideal thumbnail. Two hosting guides instead recommend a 500 × 500 image, and another recommends a square image below 512 KB. Because these are recommendations rather than a single confirmed limit, use a square PNG and keep a smaller optimized copy available if the first image does not display.

A practical workflow is to start with a square PNG, export a 500 × 500 version if you want to follow the hosting guides, and keep the file well below 512 KB. If you are deliberately following the official wiki’s ideal dimensions, use 64 × 64 for Icon and 32 × 32 for Thumbnail. Do not treat any one of these figures as a guaranteed universal requirement; the sources conflict.
Use a simple filename and avoid replacing the image with a different format while keeping the old extension in the URL. If you change from PNG to JPG, update the complete URL so the extension and the actual file agree.
Change the Thumbnail at the same time (optional)
If you want to set both browser images, edit the neighboring Thumbnail property as well:

- Save the file in plain text. Keep the filename
config.jsonand do not let the editor append.txt. - Check the edited lines. Confirm that both URLs are inside straight double quotes, that the URL is direct, and that the surrounding braces and commas remain intact.
- Close the editor. This avoids accidentally uploading an older unsaved copy from a hosting panel.
- Start or restart the Unturned server. Hosting documentation says the new icon and thumbnail should appear after a restart.
- Open the server’s information view. Look for the icon where the server details are shown. Allow time for the client to refresh its listing if the old image was already cached.
If the server fails to start after the edit, stop it again and restore the backup. A missing quote, brace, or comma is a more likely cause than the image itself. Reapply the change carefully after the original file loads successfully.
If your server has Config.txt instead of config.json
One hosting document claims that the Unturned 3.25.8.0 update introduced Config.txt and replaced Config.json. That claim is from a single source and is not independently confirmed here. Dedicated-server instructions generally identify Servers/<Server name>/config.json as the location, so first check the folder you actually have and the documentation for your installed release.

If the server folder contains Config.txt rather than config.json, do not create a second file simply to follow an older guide. Make a backup, inspect the existing file, and look for the same Browser, Icon, and Thumbnail keys. The single-source report says the keys remain the same, but the exact syntax and release behavior should be verified against current release notes or your host’s instructions before treating that as universal.
Troubleshoot an icon that does not appear
The old icon is still visible
- Confirm that you stopped the correct server instance before editing.
- Check that you changed the
Iconkey insideBrowser, not a similarly named setting elsewhere. - Verify that the hosting panel saved the file to the active server directory.
- Restart the server completely rather than merely reconnecting to it.
- Open the direct URL in a browser to make sure it still serves the image.
A listing or client can retain an earlier image temporarily. Before making repeated configuration changes, verify the file and restart sequence so that you do not mistake a refresh delay for a syntax problem.
The icon is blank or broken
- Open the URL without being logged in. If it redirects to a page, the address is not a direct image URL.
- Check that the address uses
https://and ends in.pngor.jpg. - For Imgur, use the
i.imgur.comimage host rather than animgur.comviewing page. - Try a square PNG. This follows the common recommendation while avoiding a dependence on a disputed exact size.
- Make sure the image has not been deleted, made private, or moved to another URL.
The server will not start after editing
Restore the backup first. Then compare the edited block with a valid JSON structure. Typical mistakes are a missing comma between properties, a curly “smart” quote copied from a formatted document, an extra comma after the final property, or a URL pasted outside quotation marks. Do not troubleshoot the image host until the server can start with a syntactically valid configuration.
The configuration keeps reverting
Stop the process before editing and make sure it is fully offline. Some panels expose multiple configuration files or regenerate settings from a template. If your change disappears, compare the timestamp and location of the file you edited with the file the panel opens, then repeat the edit while the server is stopped. Keep a dated backup of the working version so you can identify which file is authoritative.

The image works in a browser but not in Unturned
Test a direct PNG URL, not merely a URL that displays the image through a web page. Reduce the image to a square file and, if necessary, try the published 64 × 64 icon or 500 × 500 square recommendations. Because the available guidance does not establish one universal size, test one change at a time and restart after each configuration edit.

Keeping the icon working
The configuration stores a URL, not a permanent copy of the image. Keep a local backup of the artwork and periodically open the configured URL. If you replace the image at a new address, update the configuration and restart the server again.
Game updates can also change configuration filenames or key handling. The documented path and key names are current to the material available for this guide, but a major Unturned release may require checking the release notes or the current dedicated-server documentation before editing. If your installation presents a different file name, use the existing active configuration rather than creating duplicate files.
Why a direct URL is the safest method
A direct URL gives the game a single resource it can request when building the server information display. A local path depends on the server’s filesystem and is not established as supported by the available documentation. A viewing-page URL depends on redirects, page markup, cookies, or scripts that the game may not process as an image. Using a public, direct PNG or JPG address avoids those ambiguities and makes testing straightforward: open the same address in a normal browser and confirm that the image itself loads.

Once the stopped server has a valid Browser.Icon value, a direct image URL, and a clean restart, the new artwork should be used for the server information icon.
