There is no universal sensitivity number for visual regression tests. First check what your tool’s threshold measures, make screenshot capture repeatable, then tune the comparison against real diffs. In Playwright, threshold controls how much two corresponding pixels may differ in perceived color; it is not the allowed percentage of changed pixels.
What a sensitivity threshold measures
Threshold settings are not interchangeable across tools. In Playwright, threshold is the acceptable perceived color difference between corresponding pixels, measured in YIQ. Its documented range is 0 to 1: zero is strict and one is lax; the documented default is 0.2. A pixel counts as changed when its difference exceeds this per-pixel tolerance. Playwright API documentation
Playwright also offers separate limits for the total difference: maxDiffPixels sets an absolute count, while maxDiffPixelRatio sets a fraction from 0 to 1. Neither is set by default. These limits answer a different question: how many pixels may be classified as different after applying the per-pixel threshold?
Set up a repeatable screenshot comparison
Before adjusting sensitivity, reduce variation in the screenshots themselves. Use the same browser project, viewport, scale, fonts, and test data for the baseline and later runs. Disable or control animations, and mask regions such as timestamps or other content that is expected to change. A threshold cannot distinguish a real UI regression from unstable capture inputs.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Playwright’s toHaveScreenshot() waits for two consecutive page screenshots to match, then compares the last screenshot with the expected image. Animation disabling is the default. You can use masking or stylePath to control volatile page regions. Playwright also notes that browser, platform, and font rendering can make snapshots differ. Its screenshot scale defaults to CSS pixels; device scale can produce larger screenshots on high-DPI displays. Playwright visual comparisons
Tune Playwright without confusing the controls
- Start at the documented default. Unless you have a reason to change it, begin with
threshold: 0.2. - Inspect the diff. Decide whether the failure is a meaningful design change or expected rendering noise. Do not raise the threshold just to make repeated failures disappear.
- Change one setting at a time. If subtle per-pixel color differences are being missed, lower
threshold. If the number of pixels flagged as different is the problem, consider a modestmaxDiffPixelsormaxDiffPixelRatioinstead. - Check what the allowance hides. Confirm that a meaningful color, alignment, or layout change still fails. Keep an intentionally updated baseline only after reviewing and accepting the UI change; Playwright’s guidance says snapshots should be committed and reviewed.
For example, a test can set the per-pixel tolerance and a separate changed-pixel budget:

This is a configuration example, not a universal safe setting. Microsoft Learn uses threshold: 0.2 with maxDiffPixelRatio: 0.01 in a Power Platform sample; the ratio is an example allowance for that sample, not a general recommendation. The sample also calls out dynamic timestamps as content to avoid capturing. Microsoft Learn Power Platform sample
How Chromatic’s threshold differs
Chromatic’s diffThreshold is on its own scale and should not be copied into Playwright. Chromatic documents .063 as its default; lower values are more sensitive and more likely to cause false positives. It can be configured at project, component/story, or test level, and offers an option to include anti-aliased pixels in diff calculations. Its guidance is to choose the lowest threshold that filters expected visual noise without hiding meaningful changes. It warns that a loose setting such as 0.8 may prevent positioning changes from being detected. Review the actual diff, including with its interactive diff tool, before deciding whether a failure is noise. Chromatic threshold documentation

Fix common causes of noisy visual failures
- Anti-aliasing around text or edges: first confirm the browser, platform, fonts, and screenshot scale are stable. Mask only genuinely volatile areas. In Chromatic, consider its anti-aliased-pixel option; do not assume its threshold scale matches Playwright’s.
- Dynamic timestamps or rotating content: hide or mask the changing region, or provide deterministic test data. Do not compensate for a volatile region by making the entire screenshot comparison lax.
- Small color changes are not detected: in Playwright, lower the per-pixel
thresholdgradually and inspect the resulting diff. Avoid changing the changed-pixel cap at the same time. - One tiny noisy area fails the test: determine whether it is unstable capture content. If the rest of the page should tolerate a small changed area, set a carefully bounded
maxDiffPixelsormaxDiffPixelRatio, then verify that important changes still fail. - Layout shifts are missed: reduce the tolerance rather than raising it. In Chromatic, its documentation specifically warns that a loose threshold can hide positioning changes.
- Snapshots differ between machines: align browser/project, viewport, scale, fonts, and platform where possible. Playwright documents browser, platform, and font rendering as sources of snapshot variation.

If you need screenshot files as test inputs or artifacts, ScreenshotNeo can capture a page with one request; it does not replace a visual-diff assertion or choose your test threshold. For a direct screenshot request, see the ScreenshotNeo API documentation:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie and consent banners before capture and removes 60+ known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each step can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and each response reports the page verdict and billing status in headers. Its MCP server provides screenshot tools for AI agents. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use Chromatic’s .063 threshold value in Playwright?
No. The tools define and scale their thresholds differently, so the values are not directly comparable.
Does Playwright’s threshold control how many pixels may differ?
No. It controls per-pixel color tolerance; use maxDiffPixels or maxDiffPixelRatio for a total changed-pixel allowance.
