How to Integrate Visual Testing with Webex

Test a Webex app twice: automate screenshot comparisons in a regular browser, then inspect the app inside its Webex meeting or space host.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use two complementary checks: automate screenshot comparisons for your web app in a normal browser, then test it in the Webex meeting or space where it will actually run. The first catches changes in your app’s rendered UI; the second reveals Webex-specific layout, theme, context, and permission behavior. Webex documents a host inspection and reload workflow, but does not prescribe a visual regression framework.

Choose the Webex surface you need to test

“Webex app” can mean several things, and the right visual test depends on which one you are building:

  • An Embedded App: a third-party web application shown in a Webex meeting or space. Test both the app on its own and inside that host context. See Getting Started with Embedded Apps.
  • A web app that calls Webex APIs: test the UI states that depend on Webex identity, API data, or permissions. The JavaScript SDK documentation assumes an authenticated Webex instance: Webex JavaScript SDK documentation.
  • A meeting app using the Webex Browser SDK: test the browser meeting experience and any relevant camera or microphone flows. Check the current SDK guidance and browser prerequisites at Webex Meetings Browser SDK; version details can change.

The steps below focus on an Embedded App, while noting where authentication or meeting features call for additional checks.

Set up a repeatable visual-testing workflow

1. Make the test deployment reachable over HTTPS

The Embedded Apps Developer Guide requires the relevant app URLs to be publicly accessible over HTTPS. A local-only development address is not a substitute for a deployment the Webex client can reach. Use a representative test deployment and keep its data and configuration suitable for repeatable checks. Follow the current Embedded Apps Developer Guide for the host setup.

  • USB-A Plug & Play Compatible with: Teams, Zoom, Google Meet (Hangout), Google Voice, Slack, GoTo Meeting, WeChat, Cisco Webex

2. Capture the app in a regular browser

Run your existing browser automation against the app’s own URL before or alongside opening it in Webex. Choose a runner and screenshot-comparison system that fit your stack; Webex’s reviewed documentation does not select a test framework or define baseline rules.

For useful comparisons, make the conditions consistent: use the same viewport, test data, browser configuration, and app state each run. Capture the states that matter to users, such as the initial view, populated data, empty states, and error or permission screens. Review and deliberately update a baseline when the intended design changes rather than accepting every difference automatically.

3. Exercise Webex host behavior

Open the app in the target Webex meeting or space. Inspect the rendering with the available browser developer tools, paying attention to layout constraints and behavior that differ from a standalone browser. Publish the app changes to its web host, then use the app’s reload control to check the updated resources, as described in the Embedded Apps Developer Guide.

Repeat this check for host-dependent states that matter to your app—for example, theme, meeting or space context, and permissions. A screenshot of the standalone page cannot establish that these states work correctly in Webex.

4. Arrange identity and API access for API-dependent screens

If a visual state depends on a user’s Webex identity or API data, arrange a suitable authenticated test instance and test account. For an integration acting on a user’s behalf, Webex describes registering an integration, requesting authorization through OAuth, exchanging the authorization code for a token, and then making API calls. Use the scopes and token handling appropriate to your application; do not treat a personal token as a production authentication design. See Integrations and Authorization.

5. Add browser and device checks when the app uses meeting features

If you use the Webex Browser SDK for meeting functionality, include the browsers and HTTPS conditions relevant to those features in your test plan. Camera and microphone behavior cannot be validated by a static page screenshot alone. Consult the current Browser SDK documentation for supported details rather than relying on a version number that may have changed.

Know what each visual check can tell you

Check Good for What it does not establish by itself
Automated browser screenshot comparison Repeatable checks of your app’s UI and visual regressions under controlled browser conditions. Correct rendering or behavior inside the Webex meeting or space host.
Inspection in a Webex meeting or space Host-specific layout, theme, context, and behavior; the documented workflow includes developer-tools inspection and reloading published resources. A repeatable automated baseline comparison unless you build that capability into your own test setup.

Use both when both kinds of behavior matter. The reviewed Webex documentation does not specify a Webex-owned visual regression engine, screenshot testing framework, or standard screenshot-baseline policy, so those remain implementation choices for your team.

Troubleshoot common failures

  • The embedded app does not load: verify that the relevant URL is publicly reachable and uses HTTPS, then check the Webex developer tools for loading errors. A URL that works only on your machine may not be reachable by the Webex client.
  • The standalone screenshot passes but the Webex view is wrong: investigate host-dependent layout, theme, meeting or space context, and permissions in the Webex instance rather than treating the standalone capture as proof of host correctness.
  • The app shows missing or unexpected API data: confirm the test instance is authenticated and that the integration has the needed authorization and scopes. For user-authorized API access, follow Webex’s documented OAuth integration flow.
  • A visual comparison changes between runs: check that viewport, browser setup, test data, and application state are stable before updating the baseline. A changed screenshot is a signal to investigate, not automatic proof of a defect.
  • Changes do not appear in Webex: publish the updated resources to the web host and use the app’s reload control to inspect the current version.
  • Camera or microphone checks fail: review the Browser SDK’s current browser and HTTPS requirements and test those capabilities directly; a screenshot cannot verify device access.

Performance, reliability, and cost considerations

For fast feedback, keep routine browser screenshot checks focused on representative pages and states, then run the host-context checks needed to validate Webex-specific behavior. The sources do not establish a standard runtime, reliability target, or cost model for a particular visual-testing framework, so estimate those from your chosen runner, comparison service, deployment, and test frequency. Authenticated API scenarios also require deliberate test-account, scope, and token management.
