To set a romantic table for two, clear the surface, lay out only the plates, utensils and glasses the meal needs, then add napkins and one small decorative touch. Keep the setting comfortable and uncluttered, with enough room to serve food and see each other. You do not need formal china or a full matching set.
Start with the table and the meal
Clear clutter, wipe the table and pull up the chairs you will use. Before choosing decorations, decide what you are serving and how many courses it involves. A familiar dish—or a new recipe tried in advance—helps keep the evening from turning into a cooking project once you sit down. If you do try something new, have a simple backup plan.

Set out what the menu calls for, rather than copying a formal place setting piece for piece. Emily Post’s formal layout is intended for meals of more than three courses; for a simple dinner, extra utensils and glasses only take up space.

Set two place settings that fit the menu
- Place the plates. Set one in front of each chair.
- Arrange utensils. Put forks to the left of the plate and knives and spoons to the right. Turn knife blades toward the plate. If a course needs more than one utensil, place them in order of use, working from the outside inward.
- Add the glasses. Put out water glasses and only the other glassware the meal requires.
- Finish with napkins. Use clean napkins you already own; they can be colored or patterned rather than white.
For more than one course, you can add a utensil when that course is served instead of crowding the table from the start. Emily Post notes that white linens remain the most formal choice, but colored or patterned cloths, placemats and napkins can be just as elegant (Emily Post Institute’s place-setting guidance).

Add texture without taking away table space
A tablecloth, runner or placemats can make an everyday table feel more considered. Use what you have and choose colors that work with your plates and napkins; there is no need to buy a matching set for one dinner. If you use a tablecloth, Emily Post gives an average drop of 12 to 18 inches and cautions against fabric that hangs so low it reaches diners’ laps.
Keep the centerpiece low and compact: a few flowers or some greenery can add color without blocking sightlines. Candles are another option, but neither flowers nor candles are required. Leave enough open space for plates, serving dishes and the two diners’ hands. More decorating ideas are choices, not etiquette rules; there is no established color, flower or arrangement that makes a table uniquely romantic.

Make the room comfortable for conversation
If harsh overhead light makes the room feel stark, dim it or use softer lighting where practical. Clear nearby distractions and choose music quiet enough that you do not have to talk over it. These small adjustments can make dinner feel more relaxed without requiring elaborate décor.

If you light candles, put them in stable holders and keep them at least 12 inches from anything that can burn. The U.S. Fire Administration advises blowing them out when you leave the room or go to bed; battery-operated flameless candles are an alternative. The agency reports an average of 20 home candle fires per day, attributing that figure to NFPA; the cited page does not specify a year (U.S. Fire Administration candle-safety guidance).

Keep dinner preparation manageable
Do as much cooking and plating preparation as you can before sitting down, so you can spend the meal together rather than repeatedly leaving the table. For food safety, follow FoodSafety.gov’s basic sequence: clean, separate, cook and chill. Use a food thermometer, and keep the refrigerator at 40°F (4°C) or below when chilling food (FoodSafety.gov’s four steps to food safety).
