Short answer: Google Sites does not document a setting for choosing the image shown when someone shares your site link. Google’s India-locale help explains publishing and access controls, not social preview images. There is no separate India-specific procedure in the available guidance.
What you can control in Google Sites
Google’s publishing and sharing instructions explain how to publish a site and control who can view it. They do not document a control for selecting the image shown in a social or messaging app’s link preview. The help page’s India locale does not describe a different preview-image feature or workflow.

You can add images to page content; Google’s Sites getting-started guide covers that task. But it does not say that a page image, banner, or site icon becomes the image used in an external link card. Adding or changing one should not be presented as a reliable way to set that card.
Publish the site and check who can view it
- On a computer, open your site in Google Sites and click Publish.
- Enter the site’s web address and publish it.
- Open Share and check the Published site visibility setting. Google documents Restricted and Public; work or school accounts may offer other choices.
- Share the published URL. If the preview image is not what you want, Google’s documented publishing controls do not provide a way to choose another one.
Making the site public controls whether people can access it; it is not a social-card image setting. Google also describes requesting that a public site be excluded from search results, while warning that such a request does not guarantee exclusion. Search visibility and link-preview controls are separate.
Why inserting an image may not change the preview
A picture visible on a Google Sites page is page content. A link preview image is selected and rendered by the service where the link is shared, based on information it can read from the linked page. The official Google guidance cited above documents adding images to pages but does not promise that a particular image will be used for a preview.

A Google Sites Help Community response dated November 2, 2019, from k8oms, a Product Expert Alumni rather than a Google employee, said: “We do not have the ability to edit the open graph protocol in Google Sites.” That is dated community guidance, not a current official Google specification, so treat it as context rather than a guarantee about every sharing service today.
If choosing the preview image is essential
If you need an explicit social-preview image setting, consider a site platform that documents one. For example, Zoho Sites documents site-wide and page-specific social preview image controls and recommends a 16:9 image ratio. Using that capability means building or moving the site to another platform; it does not add the setting to Google Sites.

- Keep Google Sites if its publishing and visibility controls meet your needs and a particular preview image is not essential.
- Evaluate another platform if you need documented image control across the site or on individual pages, and account for the work of recreating or migrating the site.
- If a specific service such as WhatsApp, Facebook, or LinkedIn matters, verify its current behavior separately. The available guidance does not establish how each service renders Google Sites links in India.

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server, not a way to set Google Sites’ social-card metadata. If you need an image of a published page, a single GET request can return a screenshot; it will not change the image a messaging or social service uses for a link preview. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://sites.google.com/view/YOUR-SITE -o shot.webp
ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie or consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each step can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, with response headers indicating the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server lets AI agents use the take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000.
