How to Set a Limit Order for Amazon Stock (AMZN)

A broker-independent guide to setting a limit price for Amazon (AMZN), understanding when the order can fill, and checking its status afterward.

To place a limit order for Amazon stock, select Amazon.com, Inc. (AMZN) in your brokerage account, choose Buy or Sell, enter the number of shares, select Limit, and set your price. A buy limit sets the most you are willing to pay per share; a sell limit sets the least you are willing to accept. The order can execute only at that price or better, but it is not guaranteed to fill. The exact ticket, time-in-force choices, and session rules depend on your broker.

What a limit order does

A limit order gives your broker a price boundary for buying or selling. The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) describes it as an order to buy or sell a stock at a specific price or better in its Understanding Order Types – Investor Bulletin, updated August 18, 2026.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  • Buy limit: your order may execute at the limit price or lower, never above it.
  • Sell limit: your order may execute at the limit price or higher, never below it.

The limit is a condition, not a promise of a transaction. The stock must trade at a price that meets your limit while the order is active, and there must be enough available liquidity for some or all of your quantity to fill. If those conditions are not met, the order can remain open or expire or be canceled according to the instructions you selected and your broker’s rules. The SEC’s order-type bulletin explains that order options and instructions can differ by brokerage.

Amazon.com, Inc. common stock is identified as listed on the Nasdaq Global Select Market under ticker AMZN in an SEC-filed 2026 offering document. Confirm the issuer and ticker in your own broker’s ticket before submitting; a ticker alone is not a substitute for checking the selected security. The filing is available through SEC EDGAR.

How to enter an AMZN limit order

Broker interfaces differ, so the labels and screen sequence below are generic rather than instructions for a particular brokerage. Use the controls and definitions shown in your account.

  1. Open the trade ticket. Sign in to the brokerage account where you intend to place the trade and open its trade or order-entry screen.
  2. Select the security. Search for and select Amazon.com, Inc. Confirm the symbol is AMZN and check the security type or share class if the ticket displays it.
  3. Choose the action. Select Buy to purchase shares or Sell to sell shares you hold. Make sure the action matches your intent and your available position or buying power.
  4. Enter a quantity. Specify the number of shares. Do not assume fractional-share orders are supported: availability and related rules vary by broker, so check the ticket and the firm’s current instructions.
  5. Set the order type to Limit. Enter the price per share you are willing to pay for a buy, or the minimum price per share you will accept for a sell. Do not confuse the limit price with the total estimated value of the order.
  6. Review duration and session choices. Select from the order-duration or time-in-force and trading-session options actually offered. Their names, availability, and operation vary by broker; an order should not be assumed to remain active indefinitely or to be eligible in every session.
  7. Inspect the final summary. Check the security, Buy or Sell side, quantity, limit price, duration, session eligibility, and any estimated amount or displayed fees. Submit only if the summary matches the order you intend to place.
  8. Check the result. After submission, look at the broker’s order status and fill details. An order can be accepted but still be unfilled, partly filled, or later canceled or expired under the chosen instructions.

This is a broker-independent sequence based on SEC guidance, not a tested walkthrough of a specific brokerage platform. For the meaning of its order-duration and session controls, use the broker’s current documentation and the definitions in its ticket. The SEC’s Online Investing guidance also advises investors to verify that an order cancellation worked before placing another trade.

Choose a limit price that matches your goal

Set the price boundary based on what you are willing to pay or accept, not on an assumption that the order will fill. A limit order does not decide whether a price is attractive for you; it enforces the price you enter. The following examples use made-up prices solely to show how the instruction works. They are not current AMZN quotes or recommendations.

Example: buying AMZN

Suppose you enter a buy limit of $200 per share for 5 shares. You have set a maximum purchase price of $200 per share. If eligible sellers are available at $200 or less while the order is active, the order may execute at a price no higher than $200. If the price does not reach a level where the order can fill—or there are not enough shares available at eligible prices—the order may remain unfilled or receive only a partial fill.

How to Day Trade for a Living: A Beginner’s Guide to Trading Tools and Tactics, Money Management, Discipline and Trading Psychology (Stock Market Trading and Investing)
  • As a day trader, you can live and work anywhere in the world. You can decide when to work and when not to work.
  • You only answer to yourself. That is the life of the successful day trader. Many people aspire to it, but very few succeed. Day trading is not gambling or an online poker game.
  • To be successful at day trading you need the right tools and you need to be motivated, to work hard, and to persevere.

Example: selling AMZN

Suppose you enter a sell limit of $220 per share for 5 shares. You have set a minimum sale price of $220 per share. The order may execute at $220 or higher if eligible buyers are available while it is active. If that condition is not met, it may remain open without a fill or fill only in part.

What the quantity and price mean together

The limit is a per-share boundary, while the quantity determines how many shares you are asking to trade. In the hypothetical 5-share buy at a $200 limit, $1,000 is the maximum share purchase amount before any applicable fees or other charges, assuming the full quantity fills at the limit. A fill at a lower price would cost less for those shares. The broker’s displayed estimate may use a different calculation or include fees; review the summary rather than treating a rough multiplication as the final cash impact.

For larger orders, a price boundary still does not guarantee a single fill for the entire quantity. The order may fill in portions at eligible prices, remain partly open, or not fill. Check the broker’s execution details for filled quantity and price rather than relying only on the original order confirmation.

Limit, market, stop, and stop-limit orders compared

These order types answer different questions: a limit order specifies a price boundary now; a stop order waits for a trigger and then becomes a market order; a stop-limit waits for a trigger and then applies a limit condition. Their availability and implementation can vary by broker, as the SEC notes in its order-type guidance.

Order type Price boundary What triggers or enables execution Is execution guaranteed?
Market Does not guarantee a particular execution price. It is submitted for execution at the available market price, subject to the broker’s handling and applicable conditions. No guarantee of price; a market order prioritizes execution but does not promise a specific price.
Limit Yes. A buy is limited to the entered price or lower; a sell to the entered price or higher. Available orders must meet the limit condition while the order remains active. No. The market may not reach a fillable price, or quantity may be insufficient.
Stop The stop price is a trigger, not a guaranteed execution price after triggering. When the stop price is reached, the order becomes a market order. No. A specific execution price is not guaranteed.
Stop-limit Yes, after its stop condition triggers, the resulting limit order has a price boundary. The stop price triggers the order; the limit condition governs whether it can execute afterward. No. The limit price may not be reachable, leaving the order unfilled.

A stop order and a limit order are not interchangeable. A limit order is appropriate only when the priority is to enforce a maximum buy or minimum sell price, with the possibility of no fill. A stop instruction instead waits for a trigger, and a stop-limit adds a separate execution-price boundary after that trigger. Confirm the ticket’s definitions before submitting any order type.

Duration, trading sessions, and changing orders

When setting up an order, pay attention to how long it can remain active and which trading sessions it can access. Brokers may present different time-in-force and session choices; no universal duration or extended-session eligibility can be assumed from the fact that an order is a limit order. Read the broker’s explanation for the option you select. If a broker offers an extended-hours choice, verify that the specific order is eligible and understand its stated rules before relying on it.

A limit order can also become stale relative to your intent if the market moves or circumstances change. If you decide to cancel or amend it, use the broker’s order controls and verify the final status. A cancellation request is not the same as confirmed cancellation: the original order could execute while the request is being processed. Investor.gov’s Online Investing page specifically cautions investors to make sure a cancellation worked before placing another trade.

Check order status and fills after submission

Submitting an order and completing a trade are separate events. A broker may acknowledge that it received an order without that order having filled. Use the account’s order-status and execution-detail views to determine what happened.

  • Open or working: the order remains active, but the requested quantity has not necessarily traded.
  • Partially filled: some shares have executed. Check the filled amount and what quantity, if any, remains open.
  • Filled: review the execution details, including the quantity and reported price or prices.
  • Canceled, rejected, or expired: read the broker’s status details to understand whether the order can still execute and whether any action is needed.

Status wording differs among firms, so use the broker’s own definitions. If you submitted a cancel or replace request, wait for and verify the resulting status before entering a new order. That check helps avoid accidentally leaving the original order active while adding another order for the same intended trade.

Why a limit order may not fill at the price you expected

The market never reaches an eligible price

A buy limit cannot execute above its maximum, and a sell limit cannot execute below its minimum. If the stock does not reach a price that satisfies the relevant condition before the order is no longer active, there may be no execution. A limit order is not a reservation at the price you typed.

There is not enough available quantity

Even when a price condition is met, available liquidity may be insufficient to execute your full quantity. This can result in a partial fill. Check both the executed portion and the remaining open quantity in the broker’s order details.

The order was not eligible for the session you expected

Session access depends on the options and rules of the selected broker. An order entered outside the session you intended may not be eligible to execute then, or the broker may require a specific instruction. Consult the ticket and the firm’s current documentation rather than assuming a standard session setting.

Best Value

The order was canceled, expired, or rejected

The order’s duration, broker rules, or other account and order conditions may affect its status. No universal cancellation policy, order persistence, or rejection rules apply across brokerages. Check the status explanation in your account or contact the broker if the reason is unclear; do not infer that an order remains active from the fact that you once submitted it.

Execution prices can change while an order is handled

A broker routes orders to execution venues, and prices can change while the order is being handled. The SEC says brokers have a duty to seek the best execution reasonably available, but that does not guarantee execution speed or price improvement. See Investor.gov’s Executing an Order explanation.

For a limit order, the price boundary still applies to any execution: a buy cannot fill above its limit, and a sell cannot fill below its limit. But that protection does not assure that the order will execute, that the entire quantity will trade, or that it will do so immediately. Use the fill report to see the actual execution rather than treating the limit price as a promised fill price.

Before you submit: a short checklist

  • Is the selected security Amazon.com, Inc. common stock, ticker AMZN?
  • Is the side correct: Buy or Sell?
  • Does the quantity match your intent, and does the broker support that kind of share quantity?
  • Is the order type Limit, with the price entered on a per-share basis?
  • For a buy, is the limit the most you will pay? For a sell, is it the least you will accept?
  • Have you checked the time-in-force, session eligibility, estimated amount, and any displayed fees?
  • Do you know where to review order status and fill details after submission?

Because no particular brokerage is specified, exact screen names, fractional-share support, order persistence, extended-hours eligibility, and cancellation procedures cannot be stated universally. Your broker’s current ticket and documentation determine those details.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
