The exact steps depend on your issuing bank, wallet, phone or watch, and operating-system version. First confirm that your particular Jaywan card is eligible for the wallet you want to use. Add and verify the card through the bank or wallet’s current enrollment flow, then use that wallet’s default card control to select Jaywan. Adding a card does not necessarily make it the default.
Al Etihad Payments documents how to add a Jaywan card to Apple Wallet, while issuer support pages determine whether Google Pay, Samsung Pay, Apple Pay, or another wallet is available for your card. The official material available for this guide does not establish one universal set of default-card taps for every device and operating-system version, so do not assume that instructions for one bank or wallet apply to another.

What you need before changing the default card
Jaywan is the UAE’s national card-payment scheme. Participating banks issue Jaywan cards, and the issuing bank controls the product’s wallet eligibility, verification process, and terms. Having a physical Jaywan card therefore does not by itself prove that it can be provisioned in every mobile wallet.

Check the issuing bank’s current app or support page first. If the bank lists a wallet as unavailable, “coming soon,” or restricted to certain card types, do not try to work around that restriction; ask the bank whether your exact card can be provisioned.

Check whether your Jaywan card supports your wallet
Use the issuer’s information for your exact card
Look in the bank app for a section labelled something like Cards, Digital wallet, Wallets, or Add to wallet. The wording differs by issuer. A support agent can also confirm eligibility if the app does not show a wallet option.
Have the card name or product type ready when you contact the bank. Two Jaywan cards from the same country can have different wallet eligibility, transaction rules, or international acceptance. The issuer can also tell you whether a replacement card requires a fresh wallet enrollment.
Al Etihad Payments’ Apple Pay guide says cardholders can open Wallet on an iPhone, tap the plus sign, enter or scan the card, and complete bank verification. It also tells cardholders to open their banking app and follow its instructions where applicable. That is an enrollment procedure; it is not a statement that the card becomes the default automatically.

Example: RAKBANK’s Jaywan debit card
RAKBANK states that its Jaywan debit card is ready for Google Pay and Samsung Pay. The same page says Apple Pay is coming soon for that product. Because availability can change, RAKBANK customers should verify the current status in the bank’s app or support channel before attempting setup. Do not generalize this one product’s status to every Jaywan card issued in the UAE.

Add and verify the Jaywan card
Apple Wallet on iPhone
These are the card-addition steps documented by Al Etihad Payments. They should be treated separately from selecting the default card.
- Open the Wallet app on your iPhone.
- Tap the + button to add a card.
- Enter the Jaywan card details or scan the physical card when the app offers that option.
- Follow the bank’s verification instructions. The bank may send a code, request approval in its app, or require another authentication step.
- Wait until Wallet confirms that the card is ready for use. If verification fails, contact the issuing bank rather than repeatedly submitting the card.
Al Etihad Payments says the actual Jaywan card number is not shared with merchants or stored on Apple servers when using Apple Pay. That statement describes Apple Pay’s handling of the card number; it should not be extended automatically to other wallets.
Google Pay or Samsung Pay
For a wallet supported by your issuer, start from the wallet app or the bank app’s card-management screen and choose the option to add a payment card. Follow the on-screen scan or manual-entry process, then complete every bank verification request. If the wallet reports that the card is unsupported, capture the exact message and ask the issuer whether your Jaywan product is eligible.

Do not infer support from the fact that another bank’s Jaywan card works in the same wallet. Eligibility is card- and issuer-specific. If your bank offers an add-to-wallet button in its own app, using that route may ensure that the correct card variant and verification channel are selected.
What verification status means
A card can be visible in a wallet without being ready for payment. Look for a status such as verified, ready, or active. A pending, suspended, or verification-required status means the enrollment is incomplete. Follow the bank’s latest instruction once, and if the process still fails, record the message and contact the issuer. Repeatedly entering expired codes can create more confusion and may trigger additional security checks.
Understand what “default” changes
The default card is normally the card a wallet presents first for a contactless transaction. It is not the same as making Jaywan the only card in the wallet, changing the bank account that receives funds, or changing the card used for online checkout. A merchant website may display a separate saved-card preference, and a watch can maintain its own wallet card order.
Changing the default also does not override the card’s acceptance rules. A domestic-only card remains domestic-only, and a merchant that does not accept Jaywan can still decline the transaction. Keep another verified payment method until you have confirmed that the Jaywan card works where you intend to use it.

Once the card has been added and verified, open the wallet or device settings and look for a control labelled Default card, Default payment card, or similar. Select the verified Jaywan card and confirm that the wallet marks it as the default. The label and location can change after an operating-system update, and the procedure differs between iPhone, Android phones, watches, and manufacturer-specific wallets.
If you use an iPhone or Apple Watch
Use the current default-card setting in Apple Wallet or the connected device’s Wallet settings. If your iPhone and Apple Watch show separate card lists, check the default on the device you will actually use at the terminal. The Apple Pay enrollment page from Al Etihad Payments explains how to add the card but does not specify the current default-selection taps, so follow the instructions displayed by your Apple device rather than assuming that the newly added card is first in line.
If the watch was set up after the card was added to the phone, confirm that the card was also provisioned on the watch. A card appearing on the iPhone does not by itself prove that the watch has a usable copy.

If you use Google Pay
Open the wallet’s payment-card management area, choose the Jaywan card that has completed verification, and use the wallet’s default-payment-card control. Confirm the change by reopening the card list or default setting. If your phone offers a separate setting for contactless payments, make sure the same wallet is selected there.

Open the wallet’s payment-card settings and select the verified Jaywan card as the default for contactless payments. Some devices distinguish between the card shown when the wallet opens and the card selected for contactless transactions; check both settings if they are presented. If no default option appears, the card may not yet be fully activated, or your issuer may not support default selection for that product.
Check the result without making a purchase
- Close and reopen the wallet, then confirm that Jaywan is identified as the default.
- On a watch, verify the card list on the watch itself, not only on the paired phone.
- Make sure contactless payments are enabled and that the device is unlocked as required by the wallet.
- Do not remove your other cards until you have confirmed that Jaywan works; keeping a verified backup can prevent a failed payment from leaving you without an option.
Why the Jaywan card may not become the default
The card is not supported by that wallet
A wallet can reject a card before default selection is available. This is an issuer-eligibility issue, not necessarily a fault with your phone. Check the bank’s current support list and ask whether your card is mono-badge or co-badged, because acceptance and wallet arrangements can differ by product.
Verification is incomplete
A card that appears in the wallet but is marked pending, suspended, or requiring verification cannot reliably be used as the default. Complete the bank’s requested approval. If a code expires, restart the verification from the wallet or bank app rather than entering old codes repeatedly.
The wallet is not the device’s contactless provider
Some phones can contain more than one payment wallet. If the wallet holding your Jaywan card is not selected as the phone’s contactless-payment provider, the device may open a different wallet at the terminal. Check the device’s contactless-payment setting and select the wallet that contains the verified card.
Region, account, or device restrictions apply
Wallet availability can depend on the country configured on the device, the bank account’s region, the device model, and software version. A bank representative can tell you whether your particular combination is supported. Avoid changing your account country merely to force enrollment; that can affect other services and may not make the card eligible.
The card has been replaced or reissued
If the bank issued a replacement card, the old digital token may no longer be usable. Remove the obsolete wallet entry only after confirming that you have the replacement card details, then add and verify the new card through the issuer’s approved flow.

The default changed after an update or device reset
An operating-system update, wallet reset, restored backup, or newly paired watch can change which card is presented first. Reopen the wallet after such an event and check the default on each device. If the setting repeatedly reverts, give the issuer the device model, operating-system version, wallet name, and exact behavior so support can distinguish a provisioning issue from a device setting.

Mono-badge and co-badged cards
Al Etihad Payments describes mono-badge cards as intended for local and Gulf Cooperation Council use. Co-badged cards work with partner international schemes and can therefore have broader acceptance. Your card’s printed marks and product terms determine which description applies; do not assume that every Jaywan card has international functionality.
Domestic restrictions on a specific product
RAKBANK says its Jaywan debit card is designed for domestic UAE use and is not accepted for international transactions or ATM withdrawals outside the UAE. This is a limitation stated for that RAKBANK product, not a universal rule for every Jaywan card. Ask your issuer about foreign purchases, overseas cash withdrawals, and online merchants before relying on the card while travelling.
Merchant acceptance is not universal
Etihad Airways announced on 19 August 2026 that Jaywan cardholders could book through etihad.com. That is a current example of merchant acceptance, not proof that every website, shop, terminal, or airline accepts Jaywan. A declined transaction can reflect the merchant’s acquiring setup, the card’s domestic restrictions, or the wallet token—not just the default-card setting.
Fees, limits, and what you cannot infer
The wallet-support information does not establish a universal Jaywan wallet fee, transaction limit, foreign-exchange rule, or issuer benefit. Those terms belong to the participating bank and the specific card product. Before switching your default for regular use, check the bank’s card terms for contactless limits, online transactions, cash withdrawals, and any domestic-only wording. Do not assume that putting the card in a wallet changes those terms.
Security and privacy checks
- Enroll only through the official wallet or your bank’s official app; never send card details or verification codes to someone claiming to “activate” the card.
- Use a strong device passcode or biometric lock. Wallets generally require device authentication before contactless payment.
- Notify the bank immediately if the phone or watch is lost. The issuer can suspend the digital card token even when the physical card remains in your possession.
- Review the wallet’s transaction alerts and the bank statement after the first payment.
- Do not photograph or publish the full card number, expiry date, security code, or one-time verification message.
What to tell the bank if setup fails
Support can investigate faster when you provide the issuer with the exact card product, wallet name, phone or watch model, operating-system version, country or region setting, and the complete error wording. Say whether the card was never offered for enrollment, was added but remains pending, or was verified but cannot be selected as default. Do not disclose a one-time code or full security code while describing the problem.
If the bank confirms that the card is eligible, ask whether there is a temporary provisioning outage, an account-level restriction, or a required update in the bank app. If it confirms that the card is not eligible, ask which wallet, if any, is supported for that product instead of repeatedly attempting the same enrollment.

What the wider rollout information means
A Central Bank of the UAE release dated 27 February 2025 described Samsung Wallet integration and Google Pay and Apple Pay as a next phase of the national scheme’s development. That announcement is historical roadmap information, not a guarantee of present support for your card. The issuer’s current eligibility information takes priority.
The same release presents Jaywan as part of the UAE’s effort to localise card-payment operations and strengthen electronic payments. H.E. Saif Humaid Al Dhaheri, then Assistant Governor for Banking Operations and Support Services and Chairman of Al Etihad Payments, described Jaywan as an initiative aligned with the UAE’s digital-payment goals. Jan Pilbauer, then CEO of Al Etihad Payments, said the industry had worked together to build a national card scheme. These policy statements explain the scheme’s purpose, but they do not replace your bank’s setup instructions.
Quick decision checklist
- Identify the bank that issued your Jaywan card.
- Check that bank’s current wallet-support page or app for your exact card.
- Confirm whether the product is mono-badge or co-badged and review any domestic-use wording.
- Add the card through the supported wallet and complete bank verification.
- Open the wallet or device contactless settings and select the verified Jaywan card as the default.
- Check the default separately on a paired watch or other device you intend to use.
- Reopen the wallet to confirm the selection on the phone or watch you will use.
- Test at a trusted UAE merchant while keeping a backup payment method available.
- If setup fails, record the wallet, device model, operating-system version, card product, and exact error message before contacting the issuer.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does adding a Jaywan card to Apple Wallet make it the default automatically?
No. Al Etihad Payments documents adding and verifying the card, but adding it does not necessarily select it as the default. After verification, use the current default-card control on the iPhone or Apple Watch you will use.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Can every Jaywan card be used with Google Pay or Samsung Pay?
Not necessarily. Wallet eligibility is controlled by the issuing bank and the specific card variant. RAKBANK lists Google Pay and Samsung Pay for its Jaywan debit card, but that status should not be generalized to cards from other issuers.
Why does my Jaywan card appear in the wallet but cannot be selected?
The card may still be pending verification, suspended, or unsupported for that wallet, device, region, or product. Complete the bank’s requested verification and contact the issuer with the exact status or error if it remains unavailable.
Can I use a Jaywan card outside the UAE after making it the default?
That depends on the card. Al Etihad Payments distinguishes mono-badge cards for local and GCC use from co-badged cards that can use partner international schemes. RAKBANK specifically describes its Jaywan debit card as domestic-only and unavailable for international transactions or overseas ATM withdrawals.
What should I do if my phone is lost after I add Jaywan to a wallet?
Contact the issuing bank immediately. The issuer can suspend the digital card token even if you still have the physical card. Do not share verification codes with anyone claiming to help.
Is there one universal set of taps for making Jaywan the default?
No. The default-card path varies by wallet, device type, manufacturer, and operating-system version. Use the current wallet or device settings after confirming that your issuer supports the card.
The Bottom Line
To make a Jaywan card your default, verify wallet eligibility with the issuing bank, add and authenticate the card, then select it in your device’s current default-payment-card setting. The sequence is not universal: issuer support and the wallet’s device-specific instructions determine whether the card can be used.
