How to Set a File or Folder to Read-Only in Windows 11

Use File Properties or the attrib command to set a file’s Read-only attribute in Windows 11. For folders, use Security permissions—not the misleading Read-only checkbox—to control writing.

To mark an individual file read-only in Windows 11, right-click it in File Explorer, open Properties, select Read-only on the General tab, then choose Apply and OK. To clear the attribute, repeat the steps and clear the box. A folder’s Read-only checkbox is not a reliable way to prevent writes; use its security permissions when you need to control who can change files or create new ones.

Set or clear the Read-only attribute on one file

  1. Open File Explorer and locate the file.
  2. Right-click the file and choose Properties.
  3. On the General tab, select Read-only to set the attribute.
  4. Choose Apply, then OK.

To remove the attribute later, return to the same Properties dialog, clear Read-only, and apply the change. Microsoft Support documents this method for removing a file’s read-only attribute: Microsoft Support: Make a document read-only.

Use Command Prompt to change the file attribute

Windows’ built-in attrib command can set or clear the Read-only attribute. In Command Prompt, use +r to set it and -r to clear it. Put quotation marks around a path that contains spaces:

attrib +r "C:UsersYourNameDocumentsreport.docx"

attrib -r "C:UsersYourNameDocumentsreport.docx"

Replace the example path with the actual file location. Microsoft Learn lists Windows 11 as supported and documents the command’s switches: attrib command reference.

Clear the attribute from files throughout a folder tree

Use a recursive command only when you intend to affect matching files in the named folder and its subfolders. For example, this clears the Read-only attribute from files matched by *.* under the specified tree:

attrib -r "C:pathtofolder*.*" /s

Check the path before running it. The /s switch includes matching files in subdirectories. The /d switch can include directory entries, but changing a directory attribute does not turn it into an access restriction.

Why a folder’s Read-only checkbox does not lock it

The checkbox in a folder’s Properties dialog is not a “deny write access” switch. Microsoft says the folder Read-only attribute is typically ignored by Windows and is used by File Explorer for customized folder behavior, such as identifying special folders. Selecting it should not be treated as protection against creating files or changing folder contents: Microsoft Support: Folder Read-only and System attributes.

Use folder security permissions to control writing

If your goal is to prevent a particular account or group from changing files or creating new ones, use access-control permissions rather than the folder Read-only attribute. In File Explorer, right-click the folder, choose Properties, open the Security tab, and review the listed users, groups, and permissions. Adjust permissions only after confirming which accounts and child items should be affected; inherited permissions and required access matter.

For command-line administration, icacls displays or modifies discretionary access-control lists (DACLs), including read and write permissions. Its effects depend on the specified account and inheritance options, so use the documentation to select an exact change rather than applying a generic command: Microsoft Learn: icacls.

Control What it changes Scope
File Read-only attribute Marks a file read-only for applications that honor the attribute; set it in Properties or with attrib. An individual file, or files selected by a command.
Folder security permissions Controls which accounts can read or write, using Security settings or DACL tools such as icacls. Accounts and folder contents as defined by the permissions and inheritance.

If a file still opens read-only

Clearing the file attribute may not resolve an application’s read-only mode. Microsoft lists several possible causes for Office files; these examples apply to Office scenarios and are not a complete diagnosis for every Windows app or storage location: Microsoft Support: Why is my Office file read-only?
