To keep rotations separate, create a VLC Video Source for each playlist, set its loop and shuffle options, and organize the sources in channel-specific scenes or show the one you need in the active scene. You select the appropriate setup when operating OBS; the playlists are not automatically synchronized with YouTube.
What you need before setting up playlists
- OBS Studio and VLC installed. OBS requires VLC for the VLC Video Source to appear; if you use 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC. See the OBS Media Sources guide.
- The media files you want in each rotation, accessible to the computer running OBS.
- A plan for how you will distinguish the channel rotations—for example, clearly named sources and separate scenes.
Create a separate VLC playlist source for each rotation
- In OBS, find the Sources dock and choose +, then select VLC Video Source. If that option is missing, check that VLC is installed and that its architecture matches OBS.
- Give the source a descriptive name, such as Channel A — evening rotation. Naming sources for the intended channel makes manual selection less error-prone.
- In the source properties, add the media files for that rotation to its playlist. Repeat these steps with a new VLC Video Source for each distinct rotation; each source then has its own media list and playback settings.
- In each source’s properties, set Loop Playlist according to whether playback should restart after the list ends. Turn on Shuffle Playlist if you want randomized playback rather than the listed order. OBS documents these controls for VLC Video Source in its Media Sources guide.
OBS describes VLC Video Source as supporting a playlist of items, similar to an image slideshow. A separate source per rotation is a practical way to keep lists and settings distinct; it is not an automatic channel-detection feature.

Organize each rotation in scenes
Scenes contain sources, and the eye control in the Sources dock hides or shows a source. You can therefore organize channel-specific layouts as separate scenes, or keep the relevant source in a scene and show the playlist intended for the channel you are operating. The right arrangement depends on how you run your channels; OBS does not select a playlist based on the destination YouTube channel. See the OBS Scenes and Sources guide.

Option A: Make a scene for each channel
- In the Scenes dock, create a scene for each channel or rotation and name it clearly.
- Add the matching VLC Video Source to that scene, or show the intended source using its eye control.
- Before starting the stream, confirm that the active scene and visible playlist source are the ones intended for the channel you are broadcasting to.
Option B: Keep several rotations in one scene
If you prefer one scene, add the separate playlist sources there and use the eye controls to show the intended source and hide the others. Verify visibility before going live so you do not accidentally display the wrong rotation or overlapping media.

Keep scenes and output settings straight
OBS Profiles store stream, video, and output settings, but they do not store scenes. If you use profiles for channel-specific output settings, manage the corresponding scene layouts separately with Scene Collections. OBS recommends Scene Collections for managing scenes alongside profiles; do not assume that changing a profile also changes the scene or source layout. See the OBS Profiles guide.
Built-in VLC source or a third-party playlist source?
The built-in VLC Video Source is the documented option if you are comfortable installing VLC. An OBS forum resource lists a third-party Media Playlist Source plugin as an alternative; its listing describes playlist editing and shuffle features, supports Windows, macOS, and Linux, and requires OBS 31 or later. Check the plugin’s current release and compatibility before installing, since third-party software details can change. The listing is available on the OBS forum.

The official OBS guide and the plugin listing describe their respective features, but do not establish how either performs in every setup. Choose based on your VLC prerequisite, operating system and OBS version, playlist-editing needs, and willingness to rely on a third-party plugin.
What this setup does—and does not—connect
This workflow creates and organizes media playlists inside OBS. The reviewed OBS documentation does not describe automatically binding an OBS playlist to a YouTube channel or synchronizing it with YouTube playlist membership. You must select and verify the intended scene or source yourself. If you need automatic channel-aware switching or cloud synchronization, confirm that a specific integration supports it before relying on it.

Troubleshooting playlist rotations
- VLC Video Source is missing: Install VLC. For 64-bit OBS, use 64-bit VLC, as specified in the OBS Media Sources guide.
- The wrong rotation appears: Check the active scene and each source’s eye control. Use clear channel-specific names and verify the selection before broadcasting.
- Playback stops at the end: Open the source properties and enable Loop Playlist if you want the list to restart.
- Playback order changes unexpectedly: Check whether Shuffle Playlist is enabled; turn it off to follow the listed order.
- The scene does not change when you switch profiles: Profiles do not store scenes. Select the appropriate Scene Collection and scene separately.
