Set a site-wide fallback image in your SEO plugin, then confirm the page’s rendered HTML includes the intended og:image URL. The fallback is used only when a higher-priority page, content, or template image does not take precedence.
What a default Open Graph image does
og:image is a page’s social-preview image URL, emitted in the HTML head. Social services use it when generating link previews, but they may cache what they previously fetched and do not all display previews identically. A site-wide default is a fallback in an image-selection hierarchy, not a guarantee that every page will use the same image. Yoast documents Open Graph output and its image selection order.

Set a default in Rank Math
- In WordPress, open Rank Math SEO → Titles & Meta → Global.
- Choose or upload the image in OpenGraph Thumbnail.
- Save changes, then inspect a page without a featured image and verify its rendered source. Rank Math’s documented setting and troubleshooting steps are in its Open Graph image guidance.
The labels may vary by plugin release. For the homepage, first check whether WordPress is showing latest posts or a static page. Rank Math documents a separate homepage thumbnail control for a latest-posts homepage; for a static homepage, edit that page’s social image.

Set the fallback in Yoast SEO
Yoast’s image selection order explains why a generic fallback may not appear even when configured. The documented priority is:
#1 Best Overall
- A page-specific Facebook image in the Yoast Social tab.
- The post’s featured image.
- A prominent image in the page content. If Yoast resized it, the full-size counterpart may be used; the documentation notes an exception when indexables are disabled.
- For Yoast WooCommerce, the first image in the product gallery may be used.
- A Social default image in the Search Appearance template.
- The site’s fallback/default social image in Yoast’s social settings.
Set the social default using the controls available in your installed Yoast version. Since settings labels and paths can differ between releases, verify the resulting page source rather than relying only on the setting screen.
Choose the right fallback approach
| Approach | Best fit | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| SEO plugin setting | A site-wide fallback that follows the plugin’s existing page and template hierarchy. | Simple to maintain, but the plugin’s image-selection order may not match your preferred rules. |
| Custom code or plugin filter | Rules that need to choose, replace, or suppress particular images. | More control, but needs developer ownership and testing after code or plugin updates. |
For a custom implementation, emit the chosen URL in the HTML head. For example: <meta property="og:image" content="https://example.com/wp-content/uploads/default-share.jpg">. Your page logic should prefer a page-specific social image when one exists and use the site fallback otherwise. Make the image URL publicly fetchable by the intended crawler.
Rank Math documents filters for changing its Open Graph image and controlling default-image or content-image selection in its OpenGraph developer hooks. Use such hooks in a controlled theme or plugin implementation, and verify the final HTML after changing them.
Verify the image a crawler can discover
- Open the public page and view its rendered source, then search for
og:image. Confirm that the tag exists, points to the expected URL, and is not duplicated by another plugin or theme. - Check that both the page and image URL are reachable by crawlers and return successful HTTP responses. A browser preview alone does not prove that a social crawler can fetch the image.
- Check the image format and dimensions. Rank Math recommends 1200 × 630 pixels; treat this as vendor guidance, not a universal guarantee for every platform.
- After a change, clear site, server, or CDN caches as applicable. For Facebook, request a fresh scrape with the Facebook Sharing Debugger as Rank Math recommends.
Troubleshoot a missing or stale preview
- No
og:imagein source: Check that social metadata output is enabled. Look for a theme or plugin conflict that suppresses the tag. - The wrong image is in source: Check the hierarchy. A page-specific social image, featured image, prominent content image, product gallery image, or template default may outrank the site fallback.
- The right tag is present but the platform shows nothing: Confirm that the image and page are crawler-accessible, respond successfully, and use a suitable format and dimensions.
- The old image still appears: Clear relevant caches and ask the platform to scrape the page again. The service may be displaying a cached preview.
- More than one
og:imageappears: Identify which component emits each tag and remove the conflict. Multiple competing tags can make image selection unclear.
Or skip the browser setup
If you need to inspect how a page renders before adjusting its metadata, ScreenshotNeo can capture the page through one API request. ScreenshotNeo is a browser-capture tool, not a replacement for configuring or validating your page’s Open Graph tags.
