To choose which app opens email-address links in Windows 11, change the MAILTO protocol association in Settings > Apps > Default apps. You can search for MAILTO directly, or select an app and edit its link-type associations.
Set the app for MAILTO links in Windows 11

Open Settings. You can also search Start for Default apps and open that settings page.

Go to Apps > Default apps.

In the search box, type MAILTO.

Select the MAILTO protocol result, then choose the email app you want from the options Windows presents.

Windows lets you assign a default by searching for a file type or link type. MAILTO is the link protocol used for email-address links. See Microsoft’s Windows 11 default-app instructions.

Use the app’s page instead
You can also open Settings > Apps > Default apps, find and select the email app, and change the link types associated with it. For Outlook, Microsoft’s documented sequence is to select a link type, choose Outlook, then select Set default to confirm. The available choices depend on the apps registered on your device; Windows’ guidance does not promise that every email client will appear. See Microsoft’s Outlook default-app instructions.
If your preferred app is not listed
Check that the app is installed, then reopen the Default apps page and search for MAILTO again. The available-app list depends on what Windows has registered for that protocol. If the app still does not appear, consult that app’s current support instructions; the Windows guidance does not establish a universal workaround.

Change only the association you need
MAILTO controls email-address links. File types such as .eml have separate associations, so changing them is unnecessary if you only want links to open in your preferred email app. Update other file or link types only if you also want those items handled by that app.
