Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWindows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallFor a one-off Chrome Headless screenshot, pass --window-size=WIDTH,HEIGHT alongside --screenshot. For example, chrome --headless --screenshot --window-size=412,892 https://example.com/ captures using a 412-by-892-pixel browser window. Chrome saves screenshot.png in the current working directory by default. This sets the capture window’s dimensions; it does not, by itself, configure a complete device-emulation profile.
Set the viewport size from the command line
Use the Chrome binary available on your system, replace the example URL and dimensions, and run:

chrome --headless --screenshot --window-size=412,892 https://example.com/
The value is width followed by height, in pixels. To capture at another size, change the two numbers; for instance, --window-size=1280,800 requests a 1280-by-800-pixel window. Chrome’s command-line reference documents this flag in combination with --screenshot and saves the default output as screenshot.png in the current working directory. - Use the width and height your layout needs, in that order.
- The documented 412-by-892 example is an example, not a universal mobile recommendation.
- A window size is not a complete device profile. Do not assume this command also sets device-specific behavior such as a particular device’s emulation settings.
Use automation for repeatable captures
For a one-time screenshot, the command line is direct. For a workflow that needs repeatable browser control, Chrome’s Headless overview points to Puppeteer as an automation option for launching Headless Chrome, creating a page, and navigating to a URL. The exact viewport-setting API should be taken from the current Puppeteer API reference; the Chrome overview linked here does not establish its syntax or default dimensions. Chrome Headless mode.

When a virtual screen is not the same as a viewport
--window-size covers the basic single-capture dimensions. If you need virtual-screen configuration—for example, for multi-monitor or screen-scale testing—Chrome documents the separate --screen-info option and the DevTools Protocol commands Emulation.addScreen and Emulation.removeScreen. Chrome says this screen-configuration feature is available in stable releases beginning with Chrome 142. It is not needed for an ordinary single-viewport screenshot. See Configure virtual screens in Headless mode.
Understand capture timing and full-page limits
The CLI reference describes --timeout as a maximum wait, in milliseconds, before --screenshot (or the related dump and PDF options) proceeds even if the page is still loading. A timeout is only a bounded wait: it does not prove that a dynamic application, network requests, fonts, or animations have finished. If a page must be ready before capture, validate an application-specific readiness condition in the automation workflow.

A larger --window-size should not be treated as a verified full-page capture method. The current CLI reference cited here does not provide a complete full-page recipe. For full-page needs, check current Puppeteer or DevTools documentation and verify the behavior against the Chrome version you run.
Check Chrome version when captures differ
Chrome’s current Headless mode uses the unified Chrome implementation. The Headless overview says it was updated in Chrome 112 and that, since Chrome 132, the former separate Headless implementation is available as the standalone chrome-headless-shell binary. If a screenshot differs between environments, identify the actual Chrome binary and version instead of assuming every executable described as Headless behaves identically. Chrome Headless mode.

Troubleshoot common problems
- The dimensions are wrong or ignored: confirm the flag is written as
--window-size=WIDTH,HEIGHT, with width first, height second, and both values separated by a comma. - You cannot find the screenshot: by default, Chrome writes
screenshot.pngto the current working directory. Check the directory from which the command ran. - The page looks unfinished:
--timeoutonly caps the wait; it is not proof that the page is ready. Use a readiness check suited to the page rather than relying on a fixed delay alone. - A larger window did not produce a full-page image: window dimensions and full-page capture are separate concerns. Validate a current automation or DevTools approach for your Chrome version.
- Two Headless environments behave differently: compare Chrome binary names and versions, including whether one uses
chrome-headless-shell.
Or skip the browser setup
