The setting applies when the browser session starts; it is not a change to make after navigation.
Set a custom user agent in Selenium with Chrome
In Selenium 4, use the browser’s Options class to configure the session. For Chrome, add the --user-agent= argument before constructing the driver:

driver.quit()Replace the sample user-agent with the string appropriate for your test. The value shown is an example, not a claim that it identifies a real browser or bot. This Chrome launch argument changes the browser’s user-agent behavior, but by itself it does not change every part of the browser fingerprint or guarantee how a website classifies the session.

Save and verify the screenshot
driver.save_screenshot("screenshot.png") saves the current window as a PNG and returns a Boolean. Check that result, as in the example, and choose a writable path with a .png extension. The Selenium Python WebDriver API documents the method and its return behavior.
The example uses try/finally so the browser is closed even if navigation or saving raises an error. It captures the current browser window after navigation; if the page needs time or interaction before it is ready, add the appropriate wait or interaction before calling the screenshot method.

Other Selenium bindings and Firefox
The same order applies in other languages: configure the browser-specific Options object before creating the WebDriver, navigate, then call that language binding’s screenshot method. Selenium’s screenshot examples show current-context capture in Python, Java, JavaScript, C#, and Ruby.

Firefox uses Firefox-specific options and profiles. Do not copy Chrome’s --user-agent switch into Firefox configuration. The current exact Firefox user-agent preference syntax is not established here, so confirm it in current Selenium or Mozilla documentation before using a Firefox-specific recipe.

Check browser and driver compatibility
If Chrome session creation fails, check the installed Chrome and ChromeDriver versions. Selenium’s Chrome guidance says their major versions should match. A mismatch can prevent WebDriver from starting, before the page or screenshot code runs.
Troubleshooting
- The site still shows the default experience: confirm the argument is added to the same
ChromeOptionsinstance passed towebdriver.Chrome, and that it is set before driver creation. Changing it after startup does not reconfigure that session. - WebDriver fails to start: check that Chrome and ChromeDriver have matching major versions, then review the driver’s startup error for any additional environment issue.
- The screenshot file is missing or the call returns false: use a writable destination path ending in
.png; check the method’s Boolean result and the process’s filesystem permissions. - The captured page is incomplete: wait for the relevant page content or perform required interactions before capturing. A user-agent setting does not ensure that a page has finished rendering.
- A bot check or different page appears: user-agent configuration alone does not control all browser signals and cannot guarantee a site’s classification of the session.
