Build your U.S. trip budget in U.S. dollars first, then convert it to Canadian dollars using a dated exchange-rate reference. Add the foreign-currency charge on your own card agreement and a separate contingency for rate changes and uncertain costs. The Bank of Canada’s daily average was CAD 1.4246 per USD 1 on October 2, 2026; it is an indicative historical rate, not a promise of what a future card transaction will cost.
Start with U.S.-dollar costs, not a guessed daily average
A weak Canadian dollar means each fixed U.S.-dollar cost takes more Canadian dollars to cover. But there is no reliable universal daily budget for every U.S. trip: costs vary by destination, dates, party size and travel style. Build the estimate from your itinerary and actual quotes instead.

Convert the estimate with a dated exchange rate
The Bank of Canada quotes its exchange-rate table as Canadian dollars per one unit of foreign currency. Its daily averages are indicative rates based on aggregated financial-institution quotes, published once each business day, normally by 16:30 ET. The USD daily average was CAD 1.4246 per USD 1 on October 2, 2026. It was CAD 1.4002 on September 18, 2026, illustrating that the Canadian-dollar equivalent can move over time; neither rate predicts the rate on a future trip or transaction. Bank of Canada daily exchange rates and its currency converter provide the reference and conversion tool.
Use this calculation: USD estimate × CAD-per-USD reference rate = CAD planning estimate before card charges. At CAD 1.4246 per USD, USD 100 × 1.4246 = CAD 142.46 before any issuer conversion charge. Write the rate and its date beside your result, and refresh it as travel approaches. The number is for planning, not a guaranteed statement amount.

Add your payment method’s conversion cost
A Canadian card used in the U.S. is converted according to the financial institution’s process and the terms in your card agreement. An institution may convert directly to Canadian dollars or route a transaction through U.S. dollars; its exchange rate and foreign-currency conversion charge affect the final CAD amount. Check the agreement for your card and follow the issuer’s stated method when estimating the charge. Do not assume every card uses the same fee. The Financial Consumer Agency of Canada’s foreign-currency conversion guidance explains why the total varies.
The agency’s example shows how a fee changes the arithmetic: a EUR 1,000 purchase converted at CAD 1.45 per EUR equals CAD 1,450; with the example agreement’s 2.5% conversion charge, the fee is CAD 36.25 and the total is CAD 1,486.25. This is an illustration published by the agency in 2025, not a claim that every card charges 2.5%.

For a rough trip estimate, apply your card’s documented charge to the converted amount if that matches the issuer’s method. Keep the base conversion and the fee as separate lines so you can see how much each contributes. The actual statement amount may differ because the Bank of Canada rate is indicative and the issuer or network applies its own rate when processing the transaction.
Choose USD at U.S. payment terminals
A U.S. merchant or ATM may offer to charge your Canadian card in CAD instead of USD. That offer is dynamic currency conversion (DCC): the merchant or ATM converts the price into your home currency. Government of Canada travel advice says, “Always choose to be charged in the currency of the country you are in.” For a U.S. purchase, choose USD when offered, leaving conversion to your card issuer or network. The government warns that merchant conversion can bring high conversion rates and transaction fees. Travel.gc.ca’s “Travelling and money” guidance explains the advice.

Visa says a DCC offer should show both currency amounts, the exchange rate and any extra fees, and the merchant or ATM should let you choose. If those details are missing or you are pressured to accept, Visa recommends declining the conversion and reporting the incident to your issuer. Visa’s dynamic currency conversion guidance covers these disclosures.
Set a contingency without pretending it is a universal rule
After calculating the converted trip total and payment charges, add a separate contingency for exchange-rate movement, incidental spending and uncertain quotes. Choose an amount that suits your itinerary and ability to absorb a surprise; no authoritative universal percentage is established here. Keep it visible rather than quietly inflating every category, so you can tell the planned costs from the cushion.

If the trip is still months away, treat today’s conversion as a planning snapshot and recalculate nearer departure. A rate observed on one date cannot establish what the exchange rate will be when you book, pay or travel.
Plan cash access and a backup payment method
Include only the cash you expect the itinerary to require, then account for the cost and risks of obtaining it. A credit-card cash advance is not the same as a purchase: it can carry a higher fee than a domestic cash advance, may also incur a conversion charge, and interest starts on the withdrawal date until repayment. The Financial Consumer Agency of Canada’s foreign-currency conversion guidance describes these charges.
Government travel advice notes that prepaid travel cards may have higher fees than credit or debit cards and may not work at some hotels and rental-car companies. Carry an alternate payment method rather than relying on a single card or prepaid product. Travel.gc.ca’s money guidance discusses payment options and precautions.
Use this checklist to finish the budget
- Build the USD estimate: list costs by category using actual quotes for booked items and realistic estimates for unbooked ones.
- Separate paid and unpaid amounts: keep prepaid items in the trip total, but show separately what remains to be funded.
- Convert with a dated reference: use the Bank of Canada’s CAD-per-USD rate or official currency converter, and label the date beside the result.
- Add the documented card charge: check the specific card agreement and estimate the issuer’s conversion charge separately.
- Add a chosen contingency: reserve a distinct amount for exchange movement, incidental costs and uncertain quotes.
- Plan cash and backup access: budget for any necessary cash withdrawals and have another payment form available.
When comparing payment methods, examine the total conversion charge, the rate and date applied, annual fee against expected benefits, cash-withdrawal and cash-advance costs and interest timing, acceptance at lodging and rental-car providers, and whether you have a backup. No named Canadian cards or live card terms are established here, so check current agreements rather than relying on a generic ranking.
