Instead of pasting an entire API document into an AI coding agent’s instructions, make the specification available through a Model Context Protocol (MCP) server. The agent can then request focused documentation—such as an endpoint’s parameters or a referenced schema—when it needs it. This changes how documentation is accessed; it does not, by itself, establish token savings, greater accuracy, or faster development.
What an MCP documentation server does
MCP lets a server expose tools that a language model can invoke. Each tool can have a name, description, and input schema, giving the agent an interface for requesting information instead of requiring the full API specification to be pasted into its prompt. The protocol describes this capability in its Tools section.

For API documentation, the server can read from the specification as its source of truth and return relevant material in response to a request. The agent might look up an operation, inspect its parameters, or retrieve a referenced definition. These are design choices for a documentation server, not built-in MCP operations.

Start by identifying the distinct documentation lookups a coding agent needs. Prefer a small set of task-oriented tools over one catch-all operation with unclear behavior. OpenAI’s remote MCP server guide recommends focused tools for distinct goals; MCP defines conventions for tool metadata and schemas.
| Tool purpose | What it can return |
|---|---|
| Search or locate an operation | Matching operation identifiers and concise summaries that let the agent choose the right endpoint. |
| Retrieve operation details | The method, path, parameters, and request or response schema for a selected operation. |
| Resolve a referenced definition | A schema or other definition referenced by an operation, identified consistently for follow-up lookups. |
| Retrieve authentication or error details | Relevant authentication requirements or error information, when present in the specification. |
These are suggested responsibilities, not standard MCP tool names. Use clear names and descriptions so the agent can distinguish when to call each tool. Define explicit input schemas, and use structured output when it makes results easier to interpret. The OpenAI guide covers tool configuration and result handling.
Return enough context to make each result usable
A result should include the context needed to act on the retrieved detail—for example, the operation’s stable identifier alongside its method and path, or a schema definition alongside the reference that led to it. Stable identifiers also help the agent make a later call for a related definition. Avoid returning unrelated sections of the specification simply because they are nearby in the source.

Only expose information the agent needs. Do not include secrets or unnecessary personal data in tool results. If the specification contains sensitive internal details, decide which parts the server is permitted to return rather than treating the document as automatically safe to share.
Choose a transport the client can reach
MCP transport depends on where the server runs and which environment can connect to it. OpenAI’s Agents API connection guide documents HTTP connections originating from its service, HTTP connections from the session environment, and stdio processes launched in that environment. These options are host-specific; confirm the behavior and configuration supported by the client you intend to use.
Rank #3
- Shared remote server: Use an HTTP connection when the chosen client can reach the server, and verify network access from the actual connection environment.
- Private or local resources: Configure execution from an environment that is allowed to access those resources. A server running on a developer’s machine is not automatically reachable from a remote service.
Validate inputs, permissions, and tool behavior
Tool descriptions and schemas guide model behavior, but they are not security controls. Validate requests in the server, authorize access to the requested documentation, and enforce boundaries independently of what the model was asked to do. MCP’s tool specification also cautions that annotations should be treated as untrusted unless the server is trusted.
Before relying on the server, test it in the intended host. OpenAI’s server guide describes inspecting initialization, available tools, schemas, results, errors, and access enforcement. Check both successful and rejected requests, and confirm that unauthorized lookups cannot reveal restricted material.
When the client combines tools from multiple servers, account for name collisions: MCP tool names are unique within a server, but different servers can expose tools with the same name. Give your tools distinctive, descriptive names and check how the host presents duplicates.
Check protocol and SDK compatibility
MCP specifications, SDKs, and host configuration can change independently. The official TypeScript SDK v2 documentation identifies v2 as the stable SDK line implementing the specification dated 2026-07-28. Check the selected SDK and coding-agent host against the protocol version in use before implementation; do not assume every host supports the same transports or version.

What this approach does—and does not—establish
Serving a specification through MCP gives an agent a way to request documentation through tools rather than rely on a complete pasted document. The cited protocol and platform guidance explain how tools, connections, and server behavior can be configured; they do not demonstrate that this workflow reduces token use, improves coding accuracy, or increases developer productivity. Treat those as outcomes to measure in your own setup, not guaranteed results.
