To send XRP safely, verify the recipient’s XRP Ledger address and any required destination tag, check the amount you can spend after fees and reserves, submit the payment once, then confirm its result in a validated ledger before treating it as complete. A wallet’s “submitted” message is not necessarily final confirmation.
Before sending: confirm the recipient’s XRP details
Get the destination account address from the intended recipient or its official deposit instructions. If you are paying an exchange, hosted wallet, or other service, check its current XRP deposit instructions for a destination tag or memo and enter it exactly as shown.

A destination tag is a number the receiving service uses to identify a customer or payment purpose. The XRP Ledger can record the tag, but it cannot determine whether the number corresponds to the right customer. A service may also configure its account to reject payments with no tag; requirements and tag interpretation vary by recipient. See the XRP Ledger documentation on source and destination tags and Require Destination Tags.
- Copy the address from the intended recipient’s official instructions rather than relying on an old address.
- Check whether a tag is required and verify every digit.
- Confirm the selected asset and network are XRP on the XRP Ledger, not a similarly named token or an asset on another network.
Check the amount, fee, and spendable balance
A direct XRP transfer is a Payment transaction to an XRPL account. The amount is denominated in XRP; in API examples and transaction data, XRP is represented in drops, with 1 XRP equal to 1,000,000 drops. The XRP Ledger’s Payment reference describes the transaction type, and its basic data types reference explains XRP and drops.

Do not assume the full balance displayed by a wallet is available to send. The transaction fee is paid in XRP and destroyed, and the account must retain any XRP required by the current reserve rules for the account and its ledger objects. Fees and reserve requirements depend on current network and account conditions; reserve settings can change through validator fee voting. Check the wallet’s spendable balance and fee estimate at the time of the transfer instead of relying on a fixed minimum from an older guide. See Reserves and Transaction Cost.
Submit the payment and verify its outcome
- In your wallet or service, open its send or withdraw flow, select XRP on the XRP Ledger, and enter the recipient’s address, any required tag, and the amount.
- Review the confirmation screen carefully: destination, tag, asset/network, amount, and fee. Submit the payment once and save its transaction hash if the wallet provides one.
- Use the transaction hash to inspect the transaction and check its result in a validated ledger. Do not treat a provisional response from an open, unvalidated ledger as proof of completion.
The XRPL send tutorial says outcomes commonly become final in around 4–7 seconds, but that is typical guidance, not a guarantee; network load or connectivity can delay confirmation. The documentation advises looking up the outcome in a validated ledger because unvalidated data can change. See Send XRP, Reliable Transaction Submission, and Finality of Results.

If the wallet is slow or unclear, check the first transaction by its hash before trying again. A transaction may already have succeeded, and a second send could make a duplicate payment.
Common mistakes and what to do
- Missing destination tag: Check the recipient service’s XRP instructions. If you already sent without a required tag, contact that service; the ledger cannot assign the payment to the right customer for it.
- Incorrect tag: A syntactically valid number can still identify the wrong customer or purpose. If you sent with a wrong tag, contact the receiving service with the transaction hash and details.
- Wrong address or network: Verify the destination and confirm the transfer is XRP on XRPL. A direct XRP Payment sends to an XRPL account; it is not interchangeable with a token transfer on another network.
- Attempting to send the entire displayed balance: Leave room for the fee and any applicable account reserve; use the wallet’s current spendable-balance display.
- Retrying because confirmation is taking time: Look up the existing hash and validated result first to avoid paying twice.
- Relying on an old fee or reserve figure: Check current wallet/network information when sending, since reserve settings and transaction costs are not safely treated as permanent constants.
What wallet confirmation should show
Wallet interfaces differ, so exact labels and screens depend on the wallet or service. Before sending, make sure you can review the destination, tag, network, amount, and fee. After submitting, retain the transaction hash and look for a validated result rather than relying only on a submission acknowledgement.
