This gives you a defined sending workflow and a MessageID to correlate with later tracking signals; it does not guarantee inbox delivery.
How do I send a password reset email with Node.js?
Postmark classifies password resets as transactional email: a message triggered by a user’s account-recovery request. Its getting-started guide documents sending through the Node.js SDK. You need a Postmark server token, a sender address associated with a verified domain or sender signature, a recipient, and message content. See Postmark’s getting-started guide.
Install the SDK and configure the server token
-
Install the package:
npm install postmark. -
Set
POSTMARK_SERVER_TOKENin the environment where your application runs. Keep the token out of source code and client-side bundles; the server token grants access to send through your Postmark server. -
Configure your sender address in Postmark and verify its domain or sender signature before attempting production sends.

const postmark = require("postmark");
const token = process.env.POSTMARK_SERVER_TOKEN;
if (!token) {
throw new Error("POSTMARK_SERVER_TOKEN is required");
}
const client = new postmark.ServerClient(token);
Send a one-off message
For a basic send, Postmark’s SDK accepts a sender, recipient, subject, and text or HTML content. Keep this approach for simple messages; a password-reset email is usually easier to maintain as a template.
await client.sendEmail({
From: "[email protected]",
To: "[email protected]",
Subject: "Reset your password",
TextBody: "Use the secure link from your account to reset your password."
});
Use a real verified sender address and the recipient supplied by your account-recovery flow. The example’s domain and address are illustrative.
How do I use a password-reset template?
Postmark lists password-reset designs among its transactional templates. A template keeps reusable layout and wording outside application code; your application supplies changing values through a template model. The template API supports identifying a template by ID or alias and passing a TemplateModel. Postmark’s library documentation recommends sendEmailWithTemplate with a template alias and typed model for production transactional messages such as password resets. See Postmark’s official libraries documentation, the Templates API, and Postmark’s transactional email templates.

To: recipientEmail,
TemplateAlias: "password-reset",
TemplateModel: {
product_name: "Example App",
reset_url: resetUrl,
expires_in: "30 minutes"
}
});
console.log(response.MessageID);
Configure the template in Postmark with an alias matching the one used in your request, and make its variable names agree with the keys in TemplateModel. Adapt the sender, alias, and model fields to your actual template. The SDK documentation’s recommendation is specifically for production transactional email, not a claim that a template makes a reset flow secure by itself.

Keep reset-token logic in your application
The email API sends the message; your application remains responsible for the recovery mechanism. Generate a unique, hard-to-guess reset token, associate it with the account and a short expiry, and invalidate it after successful use. Put only the reset URL or other values needed by the template in the model. Avoid including passwords or other credentials in the email. The reset endpoint should validate the token and permit the password change only while the token is valid.
What should I verify before testing and launch?
-
Sender verification: The sender must belong to a verified domain or sender signature, according to Postmark’s getting-started guide.

Which message stream should password resets use?
Keep user-triggered password resets separate from bulk or broadcast mail. Postmark describes transactional streams for event-triggered messages such as password resets and broadcast streams for bulk messages such as newsletters. This separation helps keep distinct message types operationally distinct; choosing a transactional stream does not, by itself, guarantee inbox placement. See the Postmark Manual.
What does the send response tell you?
Postmark returns a MessageID that you can log alongside the account-recovery request or use to correlate delivery and bounce webhook events. The ID is an operational reference, not proof that the email reached the recipient’s inbox. Treat it as one signal in observability: record send errors, correlate provider events where configured, and make the reset flow resilient to messages that are delayed or not received. Postmark documents the response and tracking context in its getting-started guide and library documentation.
What this implementation does—and does not—establish
The documented Postmark path covers a Node.js SDK, template-based sends, sender verification, transactional stream separation, and message-ID correlation. The reviewed material does not establish a comparative case that Postmark is better than other providers, nor does it provide an independent deliverability benchmark. Select an API by checking the same practical requirements across providers—SDK and template workflow, verification requirements, tracking options, geography, current pricing, and independently supported delivery evidence—rather than treating a successful API response as a promise of inbox placement.
