You can send cryptocurrency across borders, but it is only a useful remittance if the recipient can safely access, spend, or convert it into money they can use. Before sending, compare the recipient’s usable amount and access time—not just the network fee or confirmation speed—and verify the recipient, asset, network, and wallet address. Crypto payments are typically not reversible, so a mistaken or scam-induced transfer may be difficult to recover.
Check that cryptocurrency works for the recipient
Start with the payout, not the token. Ask the recipient whether they can receive the specific asset on the specific network, and how they will hold, exchange, withdraw, or spend it. If they need local currency, confirm that they have a practical way to convert and access it. Availability and cash-out options vary; the sources cited here do not establish that a particular asset or network can be used in every country.

A blockchain confirmation does not necessarily mean the recipient has spendable local currency. The recipient may still need to use an exchange or wallet service, complete its requirements, convert the asset, and withdraw the proceeds. Establish when the recipient expects to have usable funds, rather than relying only on a sender-side estimate of transfer speed.
Compare the full cost and usable amount
Work out how much the recipient can actually use after every charge and conversion. A transfer advertised as free may still cost money through an exchange-rate spread, conversion charge, or digital-wallet withdrawal fee. Depending on the route, costs may also include funding or purchase charges, network or service fees, taxes, and third-party charges. The CFPB identifies these kinds of costs and the expected delivered amount as important remittance information. Its 2024 circular cautions that advertised speed or cost can be deceptive if it does not reflect what the consumer pays or when funds are actually available.

For a fair comparison, use the same sender, recipient, amount, and payout goal for each route. Compare the net amount the recipient can use, not merely the amount of cryptocurrency sent or the displayed network fee.
| What to compare | What to establish |
|---|---|
| Recipient’s usable amount | What remains after conversion, intermediary, and cash-out charges. |
| Total sender cost | Funding or purchase charges, service and network fees, exchange-rate spread, taxes, and other disclosed costs. |
| Availability time | When the recipient can actually access or use the funds, not just the provider’s processing time or a blockchain confirmation. |
| Recipient access | Whether the recipient can securely hold, exchange, withdraw, or spend the chosen asset in their location. |
| Recovery and support | What the service can do after a wrong address, unauthorized access, delay, or platform failure. The FTC says cryptocurrency payments typically are not reversible. |
| Applicable protections | Whether the conventional provider and transfer meet the conditions for relevant remittance protections; coverage depends on the facts. |
Conventional remittance services may be worth comparing when the recipient needs a predictable local-currency payout. The CFPB says consumers may consider speed, cost, convenience, security, reliability, and trust when choosing a remittance provider. Check the actual terms and costs for your route instead of assuming cryptocurrency is cheaper or faster overall.

Verify the transfer before sending
- Confirm the recipient independently. Use a trusted channel separate from the request to verify the person and their destination details. Do not rely on an unexpected message, a link, or a QR code as proof of identity.
- Match the asset, network, and address. Have the recipient confirm all three. A correct-looking address is not enough if the asset or network is wrong. The FTC warns that sending to the wrong recipient can leave you without a practical way to recover the funds.
- Confirm the recipient can use the route. Ask how they will securely receive the asset and, if needed, turn it into local currency they can access. Do not assume a wallet or exchange supports the recipient’s country, asset, or network.
- Calculate the net payout. Include your funding or purchase costs, transfer charges, exchange-rate spread, recipient-side conversion, and withdrawal fees. Ask the recipient to confirm the expected usable amount.
- Check when the money will be usable. Distinguish a network confirmation from the time the recipient can spend or withdraw the funds.
- Review the details once more before authorizing. Make sure the amount, destination, asset, and network match what you confirmed through the separate channel.
- Keep records. Save transfer details and provider communications. If you use a conventional remittance service, check its official terms and contact it promptly if something goes wrong.
Recognize pressure and access scams
Pause if someone unexpectedly says you must send cryptocurrency immediately to protect money, fix a government or utility problem, receive a prize, or meet an urgent demand. Requests for wallet access or codes are warning signs too. Verify claims using contact details you find independently on the organization’s official website—not the phone number, link, or QR code in the message. The CFPB’s fraud guidance describes these warning signs.

The FTC warns that cryptocurrency payments typically are not reversible. Its consumer guidance on cryptocurrency and scams also notes that a wrong recipient address, compromised wallet, lost password, or failed exchange may leave you without a practical recovery route.

Understand which protections may apply
In the United States, CFPB guidance says remittance rules generally protect qualifying transfers of more than $15 to a person or business in a foreign country. Covered disclosures can include applicable fees and taxes, the exchange rate, certain third-party charges, and the expected amount delivered. Those protections depend on the provider and transfer meeting the relevant conditions; a crypto transaction should not be assumed to qualify. See the CFPB’s consumer information on remittance transfers and rights for details.
Regulatory treatment of cryptocurrency businesses is a separate question. FinCEN’s March 18, 2013 interpretive guidance says that, under the rules it discusses, a person using virtual currency to buy goods or services is not a money services business, while an administrator or exchanger that accepts and transmits convertible virtual currency or buys or sells it may be a money transmitter unless a limitation or exemption applies. The document addresses Bank Secrecy Act regulations; it is not a complete account of current state or foreign law, or a legal opinion for a particular transfer.
