What’s actually slowing this PC down?

You do not need a graphics card to send a YouTube livestream from a server. For a prerecorded video, FFmpeg can encode with the CPU and send the output to YouTube; the main constraint is whether that server can encode the chosen settings in real time while sustaining the upload bitrate. There is no universal CPU model or minimum specification that guarantees it will work, so test on the server you intend to use.
What you need before starting
- A server with FFmpeg installed and a software video encoder such as
libx264available in its build. FFmpeg can read, filter, transcode and output media; available encoders vary by package. Check withffmpeg -encoders. - A YouTube Live event and its ingest address and stream name/key. Keep the key secret: anyone who obtains it may be able to send video to your event.
- A video input, such as a prerecorded file. This workflow sends media; it does not inherently capture a desktop or camera.
- Enough CPU capacity to encode at the selected resolution and frame rate, plus a stable outbound connection with headroom above the chosen bitrate.
Create the YouTube event and get its ingest details
- In YouTube Studio, create or schedule a live stream and open its stream settings. YouTube’s Live streaming API describes the ingest information as an address and stream name; the encoder may ask for these separately or combine them in a URL.
- Copy the current ingest details from YouTube for that event. Do not assume a fixed endpoint or application path: use the values YouTube supplies for the selected workflow.
- Choose RTMPS when your encoder supports it. YouTube recommends RTMPS for ordinary use; it encrypts the RTMP connection. An RTMPS connection must use the correct endpoint and application path, port 443, and the expected hostname for TLS SNI. Use the official [YouTube RTMPS guidance](https://developers.google.com/youtube/v3/live/guides/rtmps) if configuring a custom ingest client.
RTMP is unencrypted. HLS and DASH are encrypted alternatives, but typically have higher latency than RTMP; HLS can be useful for some 4K/HDR workflows, while it is not suitable for ultra-low latency. For a straightforward headless stream, RTMPS is generally the practical starting point. See YouTube’s [protocol comparison](https://developers.google.com/youtube/v3/live/guides/ingestion-protocols-comparison), last updated September 14, 2026.
Choose output settings the server can sustain
YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval (no more than four seconds), and supports up to 60 fps. Its H.264 recommendations include the following figures; they are YouTube recommendations, not guarantees that your CPU can encode or your connection can upload them.
| Output | YouTube-recommended H.264 video bitrate | Two-second GOP at this frame rate |
|---|---|---|
| 720p, 30 fps | 8 Mbps | 60 frames |
| 1080p, 30 fps | 14 Mbps | 60 frames |
| 1080p, 60 fps | 17 Mbps | 120 frames |
These selected values come from YouTube’s [encoder settings](https://support.google.com/youtube/answer/2853702), accessed in 2026; the full table includes other formats and minimum bitrates. For SDR, YouTube recommends Rec. 709 color and 8-bit depth. It recommends stereo audio at 44.1 kHz and 128 Kbps; for 5.1 audio, it lists 48 kHz and 384 Kbps. For RTMP/RTMPS, accepted audio formats include AAC and MP3.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Use the settings for the resolution and frame rate you actually want, but lower them if either CPU encoding or network upload cannot keep pace. A nominal internet speed is not a guarantee of stable throughput; leave headroom and test under the server’s real workload.
Send a prerecorded file with FFmpeg
This schematic command shows the shape of a 720p30 H.264 stream with AAC audio, paced in real time from a file. It is an illustrative starting point, not a tested command. Replace the placeholders with your input and YouTube ingest details; do not paste a real stream key into public scripts, shell history, or logs.

ffmpeg -re -i INPUT
-c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -b:v 8M -maxrate 8M -bufsize 16M
-r 30 -g 60 -pix_fmt yuv420p
-c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100
-f flv 'rtmps://YOUTUBE_INGEST_ENDPOINT/APP/STREAM_KEY'
- Confirm that your installed FFmpeg build includes
libx264withffmpeg -encoders. If it does not, install a build with the encoder or choose a software encoder available in your build and adjust the command accordingly. - Set
INPUTto the actual media file path.-rereads a prerecorded input at its native rate so it is sent in real time; it is not necessarily appropriate for a genuinely live input. - Replace the output URL with the event’s actual RTMPS ingest endpoint and stream name/key in the format required by YouTube. Some workflows provide these separately rather than as one combined URL. The
flvoutput muxer is used for this RTMP-family example. - Match the encoding parameters to your intended output. Here,
-b:vand-maxrateset the target and ceiling to 8 Mbps,-bufsizesets a two-second-sized rate-control buffer, and-g 60gives a two-second GOP at 30 fps. Change all of these consistently when using another frame rate or bitrate. - Run the command and verify both FFmpeg output and the event preview in YouTube Studio. A process that remains running does not by itself prove the audience is receiving a healthy stream.
For a real-time source, replace the file input and reconsider pacing, audio mapping, filters, and capture options for that source. The exact command depends on the input and FFmpeg build; do not use -re automatically for every live input.
Test and monitor the broadcast
Before relying on the stream, test with motion and audio resembling the planned content. Check the YouTube preview and stream health during the test and again during the event. YouTube’s Live API exposes states and configuration or health issues including low bitrate, mismatched frame rate, missing audio, and unsupported codecs; see its [live stream resource](https://developers.google.com/youtube/v3/live/docs/liveStreams).

- Confirm video is moving at the intended frame rate rather than merely displaying a still preview.
- Listen for audio in the preview and make sure the input actually contains the audio track you expect.
- Check the outgoing bitrate and server CPU load while encoding. If either is unstable, reduce resolution, frame rate, or encoding complexity and test again.
- Keep the stream key private, and stop or rotate it in YouTube if it is exposed.
Troubleshooting common failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or change |
|---|---|---|
| Connection fails or times out | Wrong endpoint or protocol, blocked port, or TLS/SNI mismatch. | Use the event’s current RTMPS endpoint, port 443, and the correct hostname for SNI. Do not send plain RTMP to an endpoint expecting RTMPS. |
| YouTube reports unsupported video or audio | The output codec or format is not accepted for the selected ingest path. | Use a supported configuration such as H.264 video with AAC audio for this example, and review YouTube’s encoder settings and live stream diagnostics. |
| Low stream health, buffering, or dropped frames | Outgoing bitrate exceeds stable upload capacity, or the server cannot encode in real time. | Compare actual output with the recommendation for the selected format; reduce bitrate, resolution, frame rate, or encoding complexity, then retest with network and CPU headroom. |
| No audio | The input has no audio track, the wrong track is mapped, or the output audio settings are unsuitable. | Inspect the input streams with FFmpeg, ensure the intended audio track is included, and use AAC or MP3 for RTMP/RTMPS. |
| CPU stays saturated or output falls behind | Software encoding is too demanding for this server and workload. | Try a faster encoder preset and/or lower output resolution or frame rate. No universal minimum CPU requirement is established; validate the actual workload on the target server. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If you do not want to maintain an encoder on your server, StreamNeo keeps a YouTube stream running from uploaded videos in the cloud: upload a recording or make a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay powered on at home. Each slot streams the uploaded file as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot; it does not re-encode or use quality tiers. If YouTube drops the stream, StreamNeo automatically recovers. The first day is free with no card; it is the same product on every plan, with billing lengths from a day to a year and cancellation any time. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for uploaded videos and YouTube only, not a live camera feed. Start the free first day.
