To send a playlist of prerecorded videos to YouTube Live with GStreamer, create a YouTube live event, copy its current ingest URL and stream key, then build an application-managed pipeline that decodes each video, normalizes the media, switches between items in order, encodes continuous audio and video, muxes them into FLV, and sends the result to YouTube over RTMP or RTMPS. GStreamer provides the necessary building blocks, but concat alone is not a ready-made player for an arbitrary playlist. Check your installed plugins and test the exact ingest connection before an event.
What you need to build
A playlist stream has several jobs: open each media file, choose its intended audio and video tracks, convert items to compatible formats, move through them in order, encode one continuous output, and deliver that output to YouTube. GStreamer documents elements for these jobs, including uridecodebin, concat and rtmpsink. However, the documented examples do not amount to a complete arbitrary-file playlist application. You need a controller to manage files, dynamic decoder pads, transitions, errors and end-of-stream behavior.

You will also need a computer capable of decoding and encoding your chosen formats, enough upstream bandwidth, a YouTube channel that can create live streams, and a GStreamer installation with compatible decoders, encoders, muxer and network sink. Use YouTube’s current ingest details in Live Control Room rather than relying on an endpoint copied from an old example.
Prepare the YouTube live event
- Create or select the event. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create a stream or choose the scheduled event you intend to use. For encoder-specific setup, see YouTube’s live-stream setup instructions.
- Copy the current server URL and stream key. Enter the displayed values into your encoder configuration. Treat the key as a password: do not put it in a public script, screenshot, repository or support post. YouTube explains stream-key handling in Manage live stream settings.
- Choose the event’s visibility and start behavior. For initial testing, use a private or unlisted event where available. With a scheduled event, start the encoder and wait for the incoming preview before selecting Go live in Live Control Room; do not assume the encoder connection alone makes the event public.
Build the playlist pipeline
Decode and normalize every item
For ordinary MP4, MKV or other media files with unrelated names, have an application-level playlist controller open each URI using uridecodebin (or an equivalent appropriate to your installed version). That element discovers streams and exposes dynamic pads, so the application must select the desired audio and video streams and link them correctly. It must also handle a file with no audio, a different track layout, or a decode failure.

Before joining items, normalize their media as needed: video dimensions, frame rate and pixel format should be consistent, and audio should use a compatible sample rate and channel layout. The exact elements and caps depend on your installed GStreamer plugins and desired output profile. Check available elements and their properties locally with gst-inspect-1.0; the GStreamer plugin documentation describes the plugin collection.
Switch items in order
The concat element joins compatible streams sequentially. Its documented behavior is to move to the next requested sink pad after the active input reaches EOS. Your controller therefore needs to request and link pads in playlist order and supply compatible inputs. Decide explicitly whether the final item should end the stream or restart the list; concat does not by itself promise playlist looping. Mixed formats, missing tracks and decoder errors need application-level handling.
Encode, mux and send
Encode continuous video and audio to a combination accepted by the selected YouTube ingest protocol, mux the streams into FLV for the documented RTMP path, and connect that output to a compatible RTMP sink. The rtmpsink documentation shows FLV muxing followed by the sink and describes RTMP delivery through librtmp. Verify that your local build contains the selected encoders, FLV muxer and sink.

YouTube recommends RTMPS, but the cited GStreamer documentation does not guarantee that every packaged rtmpsink/librtmp build supports TLS negotiation with YouTube’s current RTMPS endpoint. Confirm compatibility on the actual machine and test against the current URL from Live Control Room. Do not place a stream key in a command line or configuration that other users can read.
Choose YouTube-compatible output settings
Use the YouTube encoder settings table to choose bitrate for the actual resolution, frame rate and codec; there is no single correct bitrate for every stream. YouTube’s current guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS ingest, H.264, H.265/HEVC or AV1 video up to 60 fps, AAC or MP3 audio, and constant bitrate (CBR). It recommends a two-second keyframe interval, with a maximum of four seconds. Consult YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates and resolutions for the applicable row.
- Video: choose a supported codec and a resolution/frame rate your source, encoder and network can sustain.
- Bitrate: follow the YouTube table for that specific profile, and budget network capacity for the combined audio and video bitrate.
- Keyframes: set a two-second interval where possible and do not exceed four seconds.
- Audio: choose AAC or MP3 and verify sound is present through item transitions, including any file with a different channel layout.
- Bandwidth: YouTube’s streaming tips recommend 20% upload headroom above total stream bitrate. See Streaming tips.
Do not confuse multifilesrc with a video playlist
multifilesrc is designed for sequentially named files using an indexed pattern, such as img.%04d.png; its documentation demonstrates numbered PNG images and includes a loop setting. It is not documented as a general reader for a list of unrelated MP4 or MKV filenames. Use it when the inputs genuinely fit its numbered-sequence model and compatible buffer expectations. For a mixed collection of ordinary videos, use URI decoding and application-managed sequencing instead.

RTMP/RTMPS or HLS?
RTMP/RTMPS sends a continuous FLV stream; YouTube recommends the encrypted RTMPS option. Still, successful operation depends on the installed sink and TLS-capable librtmp build, so test that exact connection.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →YouTube also supports HLS ingest, but it has different transport and packaging requirements: HTTPS POST/PUT, TS segments from 1 to 4 seconds, and a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments. YouTube notes that HLS has higher latency because it sends segments instead of a continuous stream. The cited GStreamer documentation does not establish a complete GStreamer-to-YouTube HLS recipe, so do not treat HLS as a drop-in fallback without verifying the local elements and endpoint behavior. See YouTube’s HLS setup requirements.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Test the full stream before the event
- Run a private or unlisted test using the same computer, GStreamer build, output settings and ingest protocol planned for the event.
- Confirm that Live Control Room receives a preview and reports healthy stream status before taking a scheduled event live.
- Watch and listen through transitions, not just the opening seconds. Check picture, audio, aspect ratio and continuity when the playlist changes files.
- Test the end of the list and confirm the behavior your application implements: stop, or restart from the first item.
- Monitor network capacity against the combined bitrate and retain YouTube’s recommended 20% upload headroom.
- If a key is exposed, reset it in YouTube Studio before using the stream again.
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That does not remove the need to plan for the intended duration or verify the event’s behavior in Live Control Room.

Troubleshooting common failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| No preview in Live Control Room | Wrong or stale ingest URL/key, connection failure, or incompatible sink/TLS support. | Copy the current URL and key from the event settings, inspect the local sink/plugins with gst-inspect-1.0, and test RTMPS compatibility on that build. |
| Pipeline fails when a new file starts | Dynamic pads were not handled, a requested stream was absent, or formats could not be linked. | Review URI discovery and pad-selection logic; account for missing audio/video and normalize differing dimensions, frame rates, sample rates and channel layouts. |
| Picture or sound breaks at transitions | Inputs are incompatible, audio is not continuous, or the application has not handled EOS correctly. | Test every transition, including files with different tracks; verify the next concat pad is linked in order and that the chosen normalization covers each item. |
| Stream stops at the last file | The playlist controller ends after final EOS; looping is not automatic. | Implement and test explicit restart behavior if the list should repeat. |
| Playback stutters or stream health degrades | Encoding exceeds available compute or upload capacity, or output settings do not match the intended profile. | Use YouTube’s bitrate table for the selected profile, check CPU/decoder capacity and maintain the recommended upload headroom. |
| HLS attempt has delay or is rejected | HLS requires segmented TS delivery and a bounded rolling playlist, and it is higher latency than continuous ingest. | Check segment duration, outstanding segment count, HTTPS method and endpoint requirements before treating HLS as an alternative. |
