Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesIf cellular service is gone but Wi-Fi works, connect to Wi-Fi and send a message through an internet messaging app. To send from your phone number, check whether your carrier and phone support Wi-Fi calling or texting and set it up before you lose coverage. With neither Wi-Fi nor cellular service, ordinary SMS cannot send; a supported iPhone can send certain messages by satellite in some countries, while the Pixel satellite feature documented by Google is for emergencies.
First, check whether you have Wi-Fi
Connect to a working Wi-Fi network, then use a messaging service that sends over the internet. Both you and the recipient need access to that service; it does not matter whether your phone has cellular bars.

If you specifically want to communicate through your carrier number, ask your carrier whether your phone supports Wi-Fi calling and texting, how to enable it, and whether charges apply. Support depends on the carrier and device, so do not assume that connecting to Wi-Fi automatically enables carrier-based messages. Google’s Wi-Fi calling guidance likewise advises checking with your carrier about availability and possible charges.

SMS and MMS use carrier messaging service; an internet messaging app uses an internet connection instead. If your phone has no cellular connection and no Wi-Fi internet, opening its default messaging app does not create a route for an ordinary text. Google’s Google Messages troubleshooting guide recommends checking signal, carrier support for SMS/MMS/RCS, and plan balance when messages fail.

Send a message by satellite on a supported iPhone
Check that your iPhone and location qualify
Apple documents Messages via satellite for iPhone 14 or later in the United States, Canada, Mexico, and Japan. The minimum software version differs by country: iOS 18 or later in the United States, Canada, and Japan, and iOS 18.4 or later in Mexico. An active SIM is required. Sending SMS by satellite also requires carrier support; availability and fees can vary. Check Apple’s current Messages via satellite requirements and your carrier’s terms before relying on the feature.
Prepare and connect
- Before leaving coverage, turn on iMessage and confirm your SIM is active.
- When there is no cellular or Wi-Fi coverage, open Messages and follow the satellite prompt.
- Go outside and follow the iPhone’s positioning instructions. You need an unobstructed view of the sky and horizon; trees or other obstacles can prevent a connection.
- Send the message and allow extra time for it to be delivered. Apple describes the connection flow in its iPhone satellite messaging guide.
Expect delays and limited message types
Apple gives an approximate delivery time of 30 seconds in ideal clear-sky conditions; light or medium foliage may extend delivery to over a minute. These are estimates, not a guarantee. Messages via satellite does not support photos, videos, audio messages, stickers, or group messages. SMS availability depends on carrier support.

Do not confuse emergency satellite service with ordinary texting
Apple explicitly warns: “Messages via satellite shouldn’t be used in emergencies.” For an emergency on a supported iPhone, use Emergency SOS via satellite instead.
Google’s Pixel Satellite SOS is also an emergency feature, not a way to text friends or family. Google lists it for Pixel 9, Pixel 9 Pro, Pixel 9 Pro XL, and Pixel 9 Pro Fold in the United States, excluding Hawaii and Alaska. See Google’s Pixel emergency help information for the supported devices and service details.
