To relay a Shoutcast station to YouTube Live with FFmpeg, give FFmpeg the station’s actual stream URL as its input and the ingest URL and stream key for a YouTube Live event as its output. The exact command depends on the station’s URL, authentication and audio codec, plus the YouTube event’s ingest settings; there is no safe universal command for every station.
What you need before starting
- A working Shoutcast-compatible stream URL, including any required path, mount or authentication details from the station operator.
- FFmpeg installed on a computer that can reach both the station and YouTube over the network.
- A YouTube Live event with its ingest URL and stream key available in Live Control Room. Keep the key private; anyone who obtains it may be able to send a feed to your event.
This is a relay: FFmpeg reads the station’s network stream and forwards its audio to YouTube. SHOUTcast/ICY metadata requests are supported by FFmpeg, but stations differ in their URL formats and in whether they provide useful metadata. Confirm the actual endpoint with the operator and inspect what your FFmpeg build receives. See FFmpeg’s protocol documentation.

Set up the YouTube Live event
- In YouTube Live Control Room, create or select the event you intend to broadcast.
- Choose an ingest protocol and copy the event’s ingest URL and stream key. For encrypted ingest, YouTube instructs users to use the RTMPS URL; RTMPS carries RTMP over TLS. Follow the event’s displayed settings rather than substituting a URL from another event. See YouTube’s live encoder setup instructions.
- Do not paste the key into a public script, screenshot, forum post or command shared with others. If it is exposed, replace or reset it through the applicable YouTube controls.
Inspect the Shoutcast input before choosing an FFmpeg command
Verify the URL and connection
Use the exact stream URL provided by the station, not merely its website or directory listing. Some stations require a particular path or credentials. Test the URL with your local FFmpeg build or a probe tool and confirm that it connects and identifies the incoming audio stream. A successful connection alone does not prove that the stream has the metadata, codec or format needed by the YouTube event.
Check codec compatibility
Decide between stream copy and transcoding only after inspecting the source and the selected YouTube ingest configuration. FFmpeg describes stream copy as copying packets without decoding, filtering or encoding them. It avoids a new encode, but only works when the input is compatible with the destination and the required source information is available; it cannot apply audio filters. See FFmpeg’s stream-copy documentation.

- Use stream copy only if the input audio format is accepted by the chosen YouTube setup and the stream provides the information the output needs.
- Transcode if the source format is incompatible or conversion is required. Select codec, bitrate, sample rate and channel settings by checking the current requirements for the specific YouTube ingest configuration and the source audio; those values cannot be prescribed universally for every Shoutcast relay.
Build and test the relay
The following is a command shape, not a tested universal command. Replace each placeholder with the values for your station and event, and choose either a compatible stream-copy output or an explicitly configured transcode based on your inspection. Do not publish a real stream key.
ffmpeg -i "SHOUTCAST_STREAM_URL" -c:a COPY_OR_CONFIGURED_AUDIO_CODEC -f flv "YOUTUBE_INGEST_URL/YOUR_STREAM_KEY"
Use the output format and audio options appropriate to the ingest setup. If stream copy is incompatible, replace the codec placeholder with the encoder and settings you have verified; do not leave COPY_OR_CONFIGURED_AUDIO_CODEC literally in the command. Authentication syntax and whether the key belongs in the URL or a separate field depend on the endpoint and FFmpeg setup.

- Everything in the box: Includes Pro Tools Intro+, Ableton Live Lite, Cubase LE, and Hitmaker Expansion: a suite of essential effects, powerful software instruments, and easy-to-use mastering tools
- Start with a private test or the event’s preview workflow where available. Confirm that FFmpeg connects to the station and YouTube without errors.
- Check Live Control Room for an incoming feed, then listen for audible, continuous audio before starting the public broadcast.
- Check metadata behavior separately. A station may expose ICY metadata, but that does not mean YouTube will display it as track titles or that every station sends usable metadata.
- Start the broadcast according to the event’s settings. Keep the FFmpeg process running for the duration of the relay.
Audio-only sources need particular care: a compatible audio feed may still require a video-bearing source or another platform-compatible configuration. YouTube’s exact behavior can vary with event setup, so verify the current requirements and preview the specific event instead of assuming an audio-only command will work.
Make the relay more resilient
FFmpeg documents reconnection options for network errors and streamed inputs, as well as an option to treat end-of-file as an error for endless or live sources. These may help when the station connection drops, but they do not guarantee uninterrupted service or recover from every failure. Option names and behavior can depend on the input protocol and FFmpeg build; consult FFmpeg’s protocol documentation, test with the actual station, and monitor the process.

A reconnect option only addresses certain input-side interruptions. It cannot fix an invalid stream key, a rejected output format, a YouTube event that is not ready to receive the feed, or a computer that loses power or network access.
RTMPS or HLS for YouTube ingest?
| Protocol | Setup | When it may fit |
|---|---|---|
| RTMPS | Use the RTMPS ingest URL and stream key shown for the YouTube Live event. | The standard encoder workflow described in YouTube’s setup instructions. |
| HLS | Select HLS as the stream protocol in the applicable setup and use the generated HTTPS ingestion URL. | A workflow that needs capabilities supported by YouTube’s HLS ingest; it is not automatically better for a basic relay. |
Use the protocol configured for the event, not a URL from a different ingest mode. YouTube documents its HLS setup separately at YouTube’s HLS ingestion guide.

Common problems and fixes
- FFmpeg cannot open the input: Recheck the exact station URL, path, authentication, DNS and network access. Ask the station operator for the correct stream endpoint if the public player URL fails.
- The input connects but no audio is heard: Inspect the streams FFmpeg detects and verify that the station is actually sending audio. Check the Live Control Room preview before making the event public.
- YouTube rejects the feed: Verify that the ingest URL and key belong to the selected event, confirm the event’s protocol, and check codec compatibility and current ingest requirements.
- Stream copy fails or produces an unusable feed: The source may not be compatible with the selected output or may lack required information. Transcode to settings supported by that event, then test again.
- The feed works but track information is absent or wrong: Metadata support is not a guarantee that the station sends useful ICY data or that YouTube presents it. Check the station source and avoid relying on metadata for program identification.
- The relay stops after an interruption: Check FFmpeg’s error output, input availability, output event status, machine power and network. Test protocol-appropriate reconnection options, but do not treat them as a guarantee against every failure.
Copyright and YouTube channel considerations
Having access to a Shoutcast URL does not by itself establish permission to rebroadcast its audio on YouTube. Confirm that you have the necessary rights for the recordings, performances and any other material in the stream, and review YouTube’s current copyright and live-stream rules before broadcasting. A continuously repeated feed also needs to comply with YouTube’s applicable channel monetization and reused-content policies; technical ability to relay audio does not guarantee eligibility for monetization or prevent a rights claim.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is to keep a YouTube channel live from uploaded recordings rather than relay a live Shoutcast station, StreamNeo is a different, cloud-based option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It loops uploaded videos; it does not relay a live radio URL or broadcast from a camera.
