How to Sell Courses Online: From Learner Goal to Launch

A practical nine-step guide to choosing a course topic, validating demand, creating lessons, selecting a platform, setting a price, and finding your first learners.

To sell a course online, start by defining a specific learner outcome, check that people will pay to achieve it, and build only the lessons needed to deliver it. Then choose a way to host and sell the course, set a price that accounts for costs, promote a clear enrollment page, and improve the offer using learner feedback.

1. Choose a specific topic and learner outcome

Begin with a problem you can credibly help someone solve. A broad subject such as photography, budgeting, or coding is difficult to position; a defined result gives prospective learners a clearer reason to enroll.

Describe the outcome in practical terms: what will a learner be able to do, make, or decide by the end? Keep the promise within the limits of what the course can teach. Your expertise matters, but so does choosing a result that is useful to a particular group of learners.

2. Research your intended learners and competing courses

Talk to people who might take the course. Ask what they are trying to accomplish, where they get stuck, what they have already tried, and what would make a course worth their time and money. Look at comparable courses to understand how they describe their audience, curriculum, and outcomes.

The goal is not to copy another course or to assume that competition proves demand. Look for a specific problem that existing offers do not clearly address, or a group of learners whose needs are not well served. Thinkific’s course-creation guide and Shopify’s 2026 guide to creating an online course offer vendor-published process frameworks, not evidence that a particular topic will sell.

3. Validate demand before making the full course

Test interest while the idea is still small. You can ask potential learners directly, run a survey or social poll, or offer a paid pilot cohort. A paid pilot is a stronger signal of willingness to pay than likes or verbal enthusiasm, though it still does not guarantee that a larger launch will sell.

If you presell, be clear about what buyers will receive, when it will be available, and what happens if the course does not go ahead. A presale needs a price and a working payment setup. Thinkific Support puts it plainly: “You can’t pre-sell your course without giving it a price first.” Its documentation lists Thinkific Payments, Stripe, and PayPal as payment options; availability depends on the seller’s circumstances. See Thinkific’s presale guidance.

4. Choose a format and outline the course

Choose a format that suits both the outcome and the learner. Lessons might use video, audio, written material, demonstrations, exercises, or a mix. A live pilot can help you see where learners need support before you turn the material into a self-paced course.

Set a scope that is large enough to deliver the promised result but not padded with material learners do not need. Organize modules in the order a beginner can use them, and give each lesson a clear purpose. Add practice or a finished project when learners need to apply what they have learned.

5. Create focused lessons with suitable equipment

Write or outline each lesson before recording. Keep it centered on one idea or task, explain unfamiliar terms, and give learners a way to check their understanding. Review the full course for gaps, unclear instructions, and material that does not support the stated outcome.

You can start with a computer and smartphone; the right setup depends on your chosen format. Teachable mentions an inexpensive USB microphone as an optional recording tool, not a requirement or a product it has tested. See its course-creation guide. Prioritize understandable audio and readable visuals over buying equipment you may not need.

6. Choose a platform and payment setup

Compare platforms against the way you plan to sell, not just an advertised monthly price. Check the total subscription and transaction costs at a realistic sales volume, whether you can set your price and payment plans, how much control you have over the sales page and branding, what student and enrollment information you can access, and which payment methods work in your country.

Also confirm how learners receive access after payment and what the platform handles for taxes or checkout. A marketplace and a dedicated course platform may differ in pricing control and access to learner data; those differences depend on the specific service and its terms. Teachable’s platform comparison describes these considerations from the vendor’s perspective, not as independent testing. Thinkific explains how its hosted course page can connect to checkout in its presale documentation.

Check current official platform terms before committing. Payment availability, transaction fees, tax handling, and plan features can change.

7. Set a price that reflects value and costs

Base your price on the learner outcome, the audience, and the support included—not simply the number of lesson minutes. Then estimate what you will actually keep after platform fees, payment processing, and marketing expenses. Consider whether a payment plan makes sense for the price and audience.

As one time-sensitive example, Teachable’s September 18, 2026 guide gave a U.S.-specific comparison of its Builder plan at $69 per month on annual billing with 0% platform fees versus a 7.5% Starter transaction fee, and stated a break-even point of $533 in monthly course revenue. These are vendor-reported plan details and an example calculation, not a general pricing rule; verify current plan terms and do your own calculation. See Teachable’s pricing guide.

8. Build a clear course page and promote the launch

Your course page should help a prospective learner decide whether the course is right for them. State the intended outcome and audience, explain what the course covers, show the curriculum, introduce the instructor, display the price, and make enrollment easy to find. Thinkific says its course pages can include a description, curriculum outline, and enrollment call to action; see its presale guidance.

Start promotion where likely learners already pay attention. If you have an email audience, explain the course and invite questions. You can also publish useful educational content, share relevant social posts, and participate in communities where the subject is discussed. For a presale, Thinkific names email, ads, and blog posts as possible channels. None guarantees sales, so make the message specific and track which sources bring qualified interest and enrollments.

9. Learn from the first learners and improve the offer

After launch, ask learners what helped, where they got stuck, and what they expected but did not find. Review questions, course progress where available, and the sources of qualified interest and enrollments. Use the feedback to improve lesson explanations, course navigation, the page’s description, or the scope of the next version.

If you share student comments publicly, get permission and present them accurately. Shopify includes feedback and testimonials in its launch framework, while Thinkific’s guide recommends launching and refining. These are vendor recommendations; they do not establish a typical sales result or guarantee that a particular change will increase enrollment.
