To sell an online course, first confirm that a specific audience wants the outcome you plan to teach. Then build lessons around that outcome, choose a way to host and sell them, set a defensible price, launch through channels your learners use, and improve the course with student feedback. This six-step process helps you limit wasted production effort; it cannot guarantee sales.
1. Choose a focused course idea and validate demand
Start with a subject you know well and a clearly defined group of learners. Narrow the idea to a problem they already recognize and an outcome they want. “Photography” is a broad subject; teaching new real-estate agents to take usable listing photos with a phone describes a particular audience and practical result.

Research how prospective students describe the problem, what they currently do about it, and what existing courses cover. Look for unanswered questions or a different audience that is poorly served, rather than assuming a crowded topic has no demand. Shopify’s course-selling guide recommends testing demand—and, where appropriate, preselling—before investing in full course production.

#1 Best Overall
Test interest before building the whole course
- Talk with people in the intended audience and ask what they have tried, where they get stuck, and what a successful result would look like.
- Share a short outline, sample lesson, or live workshop with potential learners and ask for specific feedback.
- If you presell, explain clearly what is included, when it will be delivered, and how refunds work. Do not imply that a finished course already exists if it does not.
Interest expressed in conversation is useful, but a commitment to enroll is stronger evidence. Testing early reduces the risk of spending months producing lessons for a problem few people will pay to solve.
2. Define the student outcome and course format
Write down what a student should be able to do after completing the course. Make the outcome observable: “prepare and publish a basic portfolio website” is more actionable than “understand web design.” Use that outcome to decide what belongs in the course and what does not.
Break the outcome into an ordered learning path. Each section should help students make progress toward the result; each lesson should explain or demonstrate one manageable part. Add exercises, examples, or downloadable resources when students need to apply what they learn.
Choose a format that suits the material
Video can show a process, audio can work for spoken instruction, and text can make reference material easy to scan. Quizzes, worksheets, demonstrations, and live sessions can reinforce learning where they serve a clear purpose. A course can combine formats, but each addition creates production and maintenance work. There is no universally correct course length or format; let the outcome and subject determine the structure.

For example, a software walkthrough may need screen recordings and practice tasks, while a writing course may rely on annotated examples and exercises. Plan for what students need to do, not a target number of modules.
3. Create lessons and prepare the learning experience
Produce only the content students need to reach the stated outcome. Draft lesson points or scripts, gather examples, and record in short segments that are easier to redo and edit. Review each lesson for clear explanations, usable audio, and a useful next step for the learner.
Record with a practical setup
A smartphone can be enough to record a basic video course; expensive camera equipment is not essential. Shopify’s recording guidance suggests using a quiet location, an uncluttered background, natural light, and a tripod to steady the phone. An external microphone is an optional way to improve clarity, especially if the room is noisy or the speaker is farther from the camera.

Give prospective students a preview
A preview lesson can show how you teach before someone buys. Teachable’s course setup documentation describes public preview lessons, unpublished lessons, drip schedules, and the distinction between publishing a course and making it publicly visible. Check the current platform settings so a preview is accessible to prospective students without unintentionally opening the full course.
4. Choose where to host and sell your course
Where you sell determines more than where videos live. Consider how learners will enroll and access lessons, what control you need over branding and student communication, how you will accept payments, and what ongoing costs or integrations the setup requires. The main routes differ in control, discovery, and setup work; none is best for every creator.
| Route | Potential advantage | Trade-off to check |
|---|---|---|
| Standalone course platform | Designed around lessons, enrollment, and student access. | Compare branding control, built-in marketing features, integrations, fees, and plan limits. |
| All-in-one platform | May combine course delivery with sales pages, email, or other creator tools. | Check whether its bundled features fit your needs and whether the pricing remains workable as you grow. |
| Marketplace | May offer discovery among people already browsing for courses. | Check how much control you retain over pricing, branding, student relationships, and marketing. |
| Online store with a course-delivery app | Can connect course sales to a broader store and its existing sales workflow. | Confirm the delivery app, integrations, payments, and any combined monthly or transaction costs. |
Shopify’s overview of course-selling options discusses these kinds of trade-offs. A marketplace’s discovery potential does not guarantee that students will find your course. A store or standalone platform can offer more control, but you may need to bring more of your own traffic or connect additional services.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.5. Set a defensible price and launch to your audience
There is no universal course price established for every subject or audience. Consider the problem’s value to the learner, comparable offers, your credibility, the course’s scope, and whether you include feedback, live support, or other services. A course with substantial individualized support is a different offer from a self-paced set of lessons, even if both teach the same topic.
Also decide whether students can pay once, in installments, or through a subscription if your platform and course model support those options. Explain what each payment covers and avoid presenting an installment total in a way that obscures the full cost. Shopify’s pricing guidance recommends considering demand, price sensitivity, comparable offers, course scope, and support. Teachable’s September 2026 guide advises comparing price points using conversion and revenue data; treat those results as evidence from your own audience, not as a price rule that applies everywhere.
Make a launch plan people can act on
Reach prospective students where they already look for help. Depending on your audience, that could mean an email list, useful subject-matter content, relevant social channels, niche podcasts or media, or search. Shopify’s marketing guide covers email, social media, public-relations and podcast outreach, paid advertising, and SEO as possible channels.

Make the sales page specific: identify who the course is for, what students will learn, what is included, any prerequisites, how access works, and the price. Use a preview or sample where available. If you try paid advertising, track its cost against resulting enrollments and revenue; do not assume that clicks or sign-ups make a campaign profitable.
6. Support students, collect feedback, and improve
After enrollment, make it easy for students to find the course, understand how to access it, and know where to ask for help. Clear welcome and access instructions can prevent avoidable frustration before the lessons begin.
Invite students to point out confusing explanations, missing examples, technical barriers, or lessons that are difficult to apply. Look for patterns across responses and use them to improve the course and sales page. Feedback can reveal a teaching problem, a mismatch between the promised outcome and the content, or an access issue; address the cause rather than treating every request as a reason to add more material.
