A conventional Git or release-archive installation is also supported and can be a better fit if your team already operates PHP, Composer, a web server and a database directly.
Antihost offers Linux VPS plans with full root access, unlimited traffic on a 1 Gbps port and a 14-day free trial.
Whichever route you choose, Snipe-IT is web software rather than a desktop executable. Your VPS must provide a web server runtime, a database, persistent storage, HTTPS and reliable SMTP. The steps below cover both installation models, reverse-proxy settings, database and mail configuration, backup design, upgrades and the failure points most likely to interrupt a production deployment.

What a Snipe-IT VPS actually has to provide
Snipe-IT is a browser-based asset-management application. Users connect to it over HTTP or HTTPS; the server runs the application code, stores records in a database and keeps uploaded files and generated configuration in persistent storage. A VPS is therefore a small production platform, not merely a place to copy a download.
- Application runtime: either the official
snipe/snipe-itcontainer image or a supported PHP web stack for a Git/archive installation. - Web serving: a web server or reverse proxy that publishes the application correctly and terminates HTTPS.
- Database: a database reachable by Snipe-IT. It may run in the Compose stack, on the same VPS, or as a separate managed/standalone service.
- Persistent storage: database files, uploaded asset data, generated keys, configuration and Docker volumes must survive container replacement and reboots.
- Mail delivery: SMTP is needed for password resets, expiring-license and expiring-asset alerts, and asset-acceptance or EULA workflows.
- Operations: backups, updates, log review, certificate renewal and a tested recovery procedure.
Never run the application as root on Linux or as Administrator on Windows. The official server guidance says to create an unprivileged user and make that account the owner of the application files. This limits the damage a web vulnerability or configuration error can cause.

Docker Compose or a conventional installation?
Both approaches are valid. The right choice depends more on the skills and operating model of the people who will maintain the VPS than on Snipe-IT itself.
| Decision area | Official Docker Compose | Git or release archive |
|---|---|---|
| Dependencies | Application dependencies are isolated in the published image; the host primarily needs Docker and Compose. | You maintain the PHP runtime, extensions, Composer dependencies, web server and related system packages. |
| Initial setup | Create a working directory, download the official Compose file, create .env, generate APP_KEY, set the URL and start the stack. |
Obtain the Git tree or release archive, configure PHP and Composer, create the database and point the web server at the public directory. |
| Upgrades | Stop the old container, pull the desired Snipe-IT image and start it with the same persistent volume. | Pull newer code or unpack a new release, install the required dependencies, run the documented application update work and reload the web server. |
| Web-server visibility | The container supplies the application stack; your reverse proxy remains the place where public HTTPS and host routing are controlled. | You can tune PHP, the web server and process management directly on the VPS. |
| Backup surface | Back up the database plus the named application volume and the Compose environment file that contains deployment settings. | Back up the database, uploaded files, application configuration and any generated keys in the installation tree. |
| Best fit | A new VPS, repeatable deployments and operators who prefer image-based maintenance. | Teams already comfortable running production PHP applications and needing direct control of the stack. |
When Docker is the clearer default
For a fresh VPS, Docker Compose is usually the less surprising path because the maintainers publish the image and document the complete workflow. You avoid a mismatch between host PHP packages and the release’s requirements, and a replacement VPS can be rebuilt from the Compose directory and its persistent data. Use only the supported snipe/snipe-it image; images from other repositories are outside the maintainers’ support responsibility.

When Git or an archive makes sense
Choose a conventional installation when your organization already has a standard PHP web-server layout, centralized process supervision, host-level monitoring or a policy that disallows containers. Git is useful when you want the documented workflow of pulling newer code. A release archive is preferable when you want a fixed, explicitly downloaded package and a controlled promotion process.
Prepare the VPS before installing
- Create administration and service identities. Make a non-root administrative account for routine SSH work. Create a separate unprivileged account that owns the application files or runs the service. Do not use the administrative account as the web process owner.
- Choose the DNS name. Point the intended hostname at the VPS before requesting a certificate. Decide whether the reverse proxy will live on this machine or on another gateway.
- Plan network boundaries. Expose only the web ports needed by users. Keep the database on localhost, a private network or the internal Docker network; do not publish a database port to the public internet unless there is a specific, protected reason.
- Reserve persistent disk. Account for database growth, uploaded documents, logs, Docker volumes, backups and free space for upgrades. A full filesystem can look like an application failure, so leave operational headroom.
- Decide where the database runs. It can be another container, a local database service or a standalone/managed database. The Docker configuration supports a standalone database by setting its host and port variables.
- Define a backup destination. Plan encrypted, off-host copies before entering production data. A second disk on the same VPS protects against accidental deletion but not against loss of the VPS itself.
- Install the host prerequisites. For Docker, install Docker Engine and Compose on the VPS. For a conventional deployment, install the PHP runtime and extensions, Composer, the selected web server and a database service appropriate to the Snipe-IT release.
Deploy with the official Docker Compose workflow
The exact Compose file evolves, so obtain it from the official Snipe-IT Docker documentation rather than copying an old file from an unrelated repository. Keep the file, your environment settings and your volume definitions together in a dedicated directory that the service account can manage.
1. Create a dedicated deployment directory
Log in with the non-root administrative account and create a directory used only for this Snipe-IT deployment. Restrict access to the directory because the environment file contains database and mail credentials. The directory should be easy to include in configuration backups, but the large database and upload data should remain on explicitly managed persistent storage.
2. Obtain the maintained Compose file
Download the Compose file from the maintainers’ Docker instructions and review the service names, volume names, exposed ports and environment-variable list before starting anything. Do not substitute an image name from a third-party repository. If you use a standalone database, remove or disable the local database service only as the documentation permits and set the database host and port to the service you selected.
3. Create and protect the environment file
Create the deployment’s .env file with the values required by the Compose template. At minimum, set the public application URL, database connection values, mail settings and an application key. Keep credentials out of shell history and source control. Make a record of which values are required to rebuild the stack without publishing their secrets.

4. Generate the application key
Use the application container to generate a key with:
php artisan key:generate --show
Place the resulting value in APP_KEY in the environment file exactly as the Compose documentation specifies. Treat this key as deployment data: losing or replacing it can prevent the application from reading data encrypted with the original value.
5. Set the public URL and proxy trust
Set APP_URL to the HTTPS address users will enter, including the correct hostname and path if the installation is intentionally published below a path. If a reverse proxy sits in front of the container, configure APP_TRUSTED_PROXIES as documented for your proxy topology. Without the correct trust setting, generated links, redirects and forwarded-request handling can use the wrong scheme or host.
6. Configure database and mail variables
Enter the database host, port, database name, username and password supplied by the local or standalone database. Then add the SMTP host, port, encryption mode, username, password and sender identity required by your mail provider. Use the provider’s TLS requirements rather than guessing whether a port expects implicit TLS or STARTTLS.
7. Start the stack
From the directory containing the Compose file, launch the services with:
docker compose up -d
Wait for the containers to initialize, then inspect their logs and open the configured URL through the reverse proxy. The first request can take longer while the application prepares its storage and database schema.
8. Complete the web setup
Use the Snipe-IT setup or pre-flight page to check environment requirements, database connectivity, writable storage and mail configuration. Create the initial administrator account only after HTTPS is working, and immediately use a strong unique password. Verify that the application URL in generated links is the public HTTPS address, not an internal container hostname.

9. Keep the named volume intact
The Compose deployment relies on persistent storage for application data. Do not remove named volumes when recreating containers, changing image tags or cleaning unused Docker resources. Replacing a container is normally safe; deleting its volume can destroy uploaded files, generated keys or other deployment data.
Install from Git or a release archive
The conventional path gives you direct control over the host PHP and web-server stack, but every one of those components becomes part of your maintenance responsibility.
1. Obtain a supported source tree
Use Git when you want to update by pulling a newer release, or download the release archive when you need a fixed package. Keep the application in a directory owned by the unprivileged service account. Do not unpack it into a directory writable by the web process unless the official instructions explicitly require that specific path.
2. Point the web root at public
Configure the web server’s document root as the installation’s public directory, not the top-level project directory. Publishing the top level can expose environment files, source code or other private files. The web server must also pass PHP requests to the configured PHP runtime and apply the rewrite rules described in the official server configuration.
3. Create the database yourself
Manual installations do not create the database for you. Create a dedicated database and a least-privileged database account, then record the host, port, name, username and password for the application configuration. Keep the database listener private whenever possible.
4. Install the release’s PHP and Composer dependencies
Install the PHP version, extensions and Composer dependencies required by the exact Snipe-IT release you selected. Do not assume that packages from a different release will work. Run dependency installation as the application owner, not as root, and verify that the web process can read the application while only the directories documented as writable are writable.
5. Configure the application and web server
Set the public URL, database values, application key and mail variables in the application’s environment configuration. Apply the official web-server configuration, reload the server and visit the pre-flight/setup page. Confirm that the site is served over HTTPS before inviting users.

Configure HTTPS and a reverse proxy correctly
Terminate HTTPS at the public web server or reverse proxy and forward requests to the Docker container or local PHP application. Obtain a certificate for the DNS name, configure automatic renewal, and redirect plain HTTP to HTTPS after the certificate is active.
- Forward the original host and scheme so Snipe-IT can generate correct absolute URLs.
- Set
APP_URLto the same public HTTPS address users see. - When a proxy is in front of Docker, set
APP_TRUSTED_PROXIESaccording to the documented proxy addresses or trusted-hop configuration. - Do not trust arbitrary client-supplied forwarding headers from the public internet.
- Check that login redirects, password-reset links and downloaded files all remain on HTTPS.
If the site loops between HTTP and HTTPS, or generates links with an internal hostname, first compare the proxy’s forwarded headers, APP_URL and APP_TRUSTED_PROXIES. Fix those values before changing application code.
Set up SMTP before relying on notifications
Outgoing mail is not optional in a useful production deployment. Password resets, notices about expiring licenses and assets, and asset-acceptance or EULA requirements depend on it.
- Collect the provider’s SMTP hostname, port, encryption mode, username and password.
- Set the sender address and sender name to an identity authorized by that provider and domain.
- Enter the values in the Docker environment file or conventional installation environment configuration.
- Open the Snipe-IT pre-flight/setup page and use its mail test after the application can connect to the database.
- Confirm delivery to more than one mailbox, including a mailbox outside the administrator’s domain if your policy permits.
- Check the spam folder, provider logs and application logs when a test does not arrive.
MAIL_BACKUP_NOTIFICATION_ADDRESS can provide an address for backup notifications when configured. Treat that message as a monitoring signal only. It does not create a backup, prove that a backup is restorable or replace encrypted off-host copies.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Design backups that can restore the service
A Snipe-IT backup has more than one part. A database dump without uploaded files is incomplete, and a Docker volume without the database is equally incomplete.
Back up the database
Use the dump method appropriate to the database engine and schedule it at a frequency that matches the amount of data you can afford to lose. Store dumps encrypted and keep at least one copy away from the VPS. Restrict dump-file permissions because they contain asset and user information.
Back up application data and configuration
Include uploaded files, generated keys, the Docker named volume or the corresponding writable directories in a conventional installation, and the Compose file plus environment configuration needed to rebuild the deployment. Keep secrets encrypted and document how an authorized operator retrieves them during recovery.
Best Value
Test restoration independently
Periodically restore a database and application data to an isolated VPS or test environment. Verify login, asset records, file downloads, mail delivery and scheduled tasks. A successful copy job is not evidence that the application can be recovered; only a restoration test answers that question.
Recommended Free Tools
Apply security controls before production use
- Use the unprivileged application owner required by the official guidance.
- Allow only required web traffic through the VPS firewall; keep SSH restricted to administrative sources where practical.
- Keep the database private and use a dedicated database account rather than a superuser.
- Protect the environment file, application key, SMTP credentials and backup keys.
- Enforce HTTPS and verify certificate renewal before the first certificate expires.
- Keep the operating system, Docker Engine, Snipe-IT image or release and web-server packages current.
- Review administrator accounts and remove old access promptly.
- Monitor disk space, failed logins, container restarts, database errors and backup results.
Upgrade without losing deployment data
Back up first and record the current image tag or application release. The goal is to change code while preserving the database, uploaded files and encryption key.
Docker upgrade sequence
- Confirm that the latest backup completed and that the named application volume is present.
- Record the currently running image and the Compose configuration.
- Stop the old container using the documented Compose procedure; do not delete the persistent volume.
- Pull the desired newer Snipe-IT image.
- Start the stack again against the same Compose file and named volume.
- Watch startup logs and allow any documented database migrations to finish.
- Test administrator login, ordinary-user login, asset creation, file upload, mail delivery and scheduled tasks.
Changing or deleting the volume while upgrading can make a healthy container appear empty or permanently remove deployment data. Treat volume names as part of the production configuration.
Conventional upgrade sequence
- Take and verify database and application-data backups.
- Record the current release, PHP runtime and web-server configuration.
- Fetch the new Git release or unpack the new archive beside the current version.
- Install the dependencies required by that release as the unprivileged application owner.
- Carry forward the environment configuration and generated application key without replacing secrets accidentally.
- Point the web server at the new release’s
publicdirectory and apply any documented migration steps. - Reload the web server and perform the same login, asset, upload, mail and scheduled-task checks.
Keep the previous release available until verification is complete, but do not leave two versions sharing writable storage in a way that can overwrite one another.
Troubleshoot the failures that occur most often
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| The browser shows a proxy error or connection refusal. | The container or PHP service is stopped, the proxy target is wrong, or the firewall blocks the internal path. | Container status or service status, listening ports, proxy upstream address and firewall rules. |
| Redirects alternate between HTTP and HTTPS. | The proxy’s forwarded scheme is missing or not trusted. | APP_URL, forwarded host/scheme headers and APP_TRUSTED_PROXIES. |
| The setup page reports a database connection failure. | Wrong host, port, credentials, network path or database permissions. | Database reachability from the application, service name or hostname, port, account privileges and server logs. |
| Uploads fail or disappear after a container replacement. | Storage is not writable or the named volume was changed or removed. | Volume mounts, ownership, free disk space and the Compose volume name. |
| Password resets never arrive. | SMTP credentials, encryption, sender authorization or DNS policy is incorrect. | Pre-flight mail test, SMTP provider logs, spam filtering and application logs. |
| The application works but generated links use an internal address. | The public URL or trusted-proxy configuration does not match the external request. | APP_URL, proxy headers and APP_TRUSTED_PROXIES. |
| An upgrade starts with an empty-looking installation. | The new container is attached to a different volume or the conventional installation points to a different data directory. | Persistent-volume identity, mount paths, environment values and database connection settings before writing new data. |
| Backups report success but recovery fails. | Only the database or only the application files were copied, or encryption keys were omitted. | Restore both database and application data in an isolated environment and test file access and login. |
Operate Snipe-IT as a service, not a one-time install
After launch, assign ownership for each recurring task: operating-system updates, image or release updates, certificate renewal, SMTP credential rotation, backup verification, disk monitoring and account review. Keep a short deployment record containing the public URL, database location, volume names, proxy trust configuration, release or image tag, backup locations and the recovery steps. Store secrets separately from that record.
Schedule maintenance during a window when brief unavailability is acceptable. Before each update, confirm a recent restorable backup; after each update, perform a small set of real workflows rather than relying on a healthy process status alone. The minimum useful check is an administrator login, asset creation, file upload, an outbound mail test and confirmation that scheduled tasks still run.
Which deployment should you choose?
Use the official Docker Compose workflow for most new VPS deployments when you want isolated dependencies, a repeatable setup and image-based upgrades. Use Git or a release archive when your team already runs PHP applications directly and values host-level control over the web server and runtime. In either case, the non-negotiable requirements are the same: an unprivileged application owner, a private database path, HTTPS, working SMTP, persistent storage and backups that have been restored successfully at least once.
