You supply a Linux server, a hostname, durable storage, and HTTPS; Seafile supplies synchronized libraries, browser access, desktop and mobile clients, and share links without handing your files to a hosted service.

What a self-hosted Seafile installation contains
Seafile is a file synchronization and collaboration platform. A VPS installation normally runs several containers as one Compose project rather than installing every component directly on the host. The project includes the Seafile application, a database, optional document-editing services, and a reverse proxy for web and share-link traffic.
The host operating system supplies the kernel, networking, firewall and storage. Docker isolates the application components and makes upgrades reproducible. The database stores metadata such as users, libraries, permissions and share records; the Seafile data volume stores the file content. Losing either side can make a restore incomplete, so both are operationally critical.

For an internet-facing server, use a real DNS name and HTTPS before creating links for other people. The hostname is part of the client configuration and is also what a certificate authority validates.

Start by deciding whether Community Edition covers your needs. Professional Edition adds enterprise capabilities, but it is proprietary and needs a larger resource budget. Compare the editions on features, expected users, CPU and memory headroom, and licensing or support requirements rather than choosing solely by price.

The Community figures are a starting point, not a capacity guarantee. Large libraries, many simultaneous sync jobs, full-text indexing, previews, and document services consume additional CPU, memory and storage. Leave headroom for the operating system, Docker and database maintenance. Storage growth is usually the first constraint: version history, deleted files and shared libraries can consume space even when the current file set looks small.
Choose block storage that survives a VPS reboot and, preferably, supports snapshots. Do not treat a temporary disk, container writable layer or an unverified provider backup as your only copy.
Prepare the VPS before installing Seafile
Provision a supported Linux distribution and log in with an administrative account that uses an SSH key. The exact package commands depend on the distribution, so follow its current security-update procedure first. Then complete these checks:

Incorrect time can break certificates and confuse sync clients.
- Assign a stable public IPv4 address; add IPv6 only when you can route and firewall it correctly.
- Create a DNS A record (and an AAAA record if IPv6 is intentionally enabled) for the hostname you will use in Seafile.
- Allow SSH only from trusted addresses where practical. Allow TCP ports 80 and 443 for the reverse proxy; do not expose the database port to the internet.
- Decide where persistent data will live and how it will be copied to an off-site destination.
Use key-based SSH access, disable password login after confirming the key works, and keep a second recovery key in a protected location. Test that you can reconnect before closing the original session.
Install Docker and create the project directory
Seafile’s current Docker manual directs administrators to Docker’s official installation instructions. Install Docker Engine and the Compose plugin for your Linux distribution; do not mix an old, distribution-specific Compose binary with the syntax used by the selected Seafile manual.

docker compose versionThe version checks should return successfully before you download the application files. If the docker compose command is unavailable, finish the official Docker installation instead of trying to start the stack with an incomplete runtime.
Download Seafile’s official Compose files
Use the Seafile manual version that matches the release you intend to operate. Download the official .env, seafile-server.yml, seadoc.yml and caddy.yml files into the project directory. Keep those files together and record the manual version in your operations notes.

ls -l .env seafile-server.yml seadoc.yml caddy.ymlDo not copy a Compose file from an unrelated release or combine examples from different manual versions. Variable names, image tags and service definitions can change. If a feature such as Seadoc is not required, follow the selected manual’s instructions for omitting its file rather than deleting services at random.
Before starting anything, validate the merged configuration. When the manual specifies multiple files, use the same file order it documents:
docker compose -f seafile-server.yml -f seadoc.yml -f caddy.yml configA successful config command renders a complete configuration without YAML or variable-substitution errors. If your chosen manual gives a different command, use that command exactly; the file names and service composition are version-specific.
Set the environment and persistent locations
Open the downloaded environment file and fill in every value marked as required by the manual:

nano .env- Set the server hostname to the DNS name that users will type. Avoid switching between an IP address and a hostname after clients have been configured.
- Set the administrator email address and a long, unique administrator password. Store the recovery details in a password manager.
- Set the database credentials generated for this installation. Never reuse an SSH or VPS password.
- Set the time zone and any optional features you intentionally enable.
- Set persistent volume locations. The documented examples are
/opt/seafile-datafor Seafile data and/opt/seafile-mysqlfor the database; equivalent paths are acceptable only when you deliberately choose and back them up.
Environment-variable labels differ by manual version. Use the names in your downloaded file rather than pasting a variable list from an older blog post. Check for accidental spaces, unquoted special characters and passwords containing characters that YAML or shell parsing treats specially.
Create the host directories before the first launch and verify their filesystem:

sudo mount | grep -E '/opt/seafile-data|/opt/seafile-mysql' || trueThe directories must be on durable storage, not a container layer. If you mount a separate disk, make its mount persistent in the operating system and test a reboot before placing important data there.
Start the stack and verify first-run initialization
Start the files exactly as directed by the selected manual. A typical multi-file invocation is:
docker compose -f seafile-server.yml -f seadoc.yml -f caddy.yml up -dOn a manual that provides a single consolidated Compose file, use its equivalent docker compose up -d command instead. The first run may initialize the database, create configuration, download images and apply migrations. It can take several minutes on a small VPS.
Watch the project as it starts:
docker compose ps
docker compose logs -fWait until the services remain in a running or healthy state. Initialization errors usually identify the missing variable, unavailable volume, permission problem or database connection that needs correction. Stop the project before changing a fundamental setting:
docker compose downDo not use docker compose down -v on a production instance unless you intentionally want to remove named volumes. Removing volumes can destroy the database or application state.
After the containers settle, open the hostname in a browser. If TLS is not configured yet, use the temporary access method specified by the manual only for local verification; do not distribute an HTTP share link.
Put Caddy and HTTPS in front of Seafile
The supplied caddy.yml is intended to place Caddy in front of Seafile. Caddy can request and renew certificates automatically when the hostname resolves to the VPS and ports 80 and 443 are reachable from the public internet.
- Create the DNS record and wait for it to resolve from a network outside the VPS.
- Confirm that the firewall and any VPS security group allow inbound TCP 80 and 443. Keep the application and database ports private.
- Set the hostname and protocol values required by the downloaded environment file and Caddy configuration.
- Start or restart the Compose project, then inspect the Caddy logs for certificate issuance and renewal messages.
- Visit
https://your-hostname.exampleand verify that the browser reports a valid certificate, the login page loads without mixed-content warnings, and a share link also stays on HTTPS.
Replace your-hostname.example in that example with your own domain; it is a notation example, not a hostname to configure. If a certificate is not issued, check DNS resolution first, then ports 80 and 443, firewall rules, hostname spelling and any other process already listening on those ports.

Do not terminate TLS only in a browser or rely on an IP-address certificate. Every browser session, desktop client, mobile client and public link should use the same HTTPS hostname.

Sign in with the administrator account defined in .env. Before importing real data, perform a small end-to-end test:
- Create a test library with a distinctive name.
- Upload a small folder from the browser and confirm that the file appears after a refresh.
- Create a share link with the narrowest permission needed, open it in a private browser window, and then revoke it.
- Install an official Seafile desktop client, point it at the HTTPS hostname, and configure a sync job for the test library.
- Install the official mobile client, sign in, and verify that browsing and an intentional offline download work.
- Edit or add a test file on one client and confirm that the change reaches the other client.
This test distinguishes application problems from client-specific problems and confirms that DNS, TLS, authentication, database writes and file storage all work together.

A Seafile backup is incomplete if it contains only the file directory or only the database. Back up the Seafile data volume and the MySQL database volume together, and copy the backup off the VPS. The documented example paths are /opt/seafile-data and /opt/seafile-mysql; substitute your deliberate equivalents when you relocate them.
For a simple filesystem backup, stop the Compose project so files and database pages are not changing while they are copied:

docker compose startUse a destination with enough capacity and access controls. An off-site object-storage or backup service is useful only if its encryption, retention and restore process are understood. Keep several generations so an unnoticed deletion is not propagated into the only copy.
For larger installations, use the database export and backup procedure in the matching Seafile manual. A logical database dump can be more portable than copying live database files, but it still must be paired with the corresponding Seafile data. Record the Compose files, environment file version, image versions and credentials needed to interpret the backup; protect the environment file because it contains secrets.
Perform a restore rehearsal periodically on an isolated VPS. The rehearsal should include creating the directories, installing the same Docker and Compose versions, restoring both state sets, starting the stack, logging in and opening a previously shared file. A backup that has never been restored is an assumption, not a recovery plan.
Harden the host and the application
- Use SSH keys, restrict administrative access with firewall rules, and keep a recovery key offline.
- Expose only the reverse-proxy ports and the SSH access you actually need. Do not publish MySQL or internal application ports.
- Keep the Linux host, Docker Engine, Compose plugin and Seafile images updated according to the current manuals. Read release notes before applying a major version change.
- Use HTTPS for browser traffic, client connections and every share link.
- Give the administrator account a unique password and rotate credentials when an administrator leaves or a secret may have been exposed.
- Monitor disk growth, memory pressure, failed containers, database health and certificate renewal.
- Keep the exact Compose files and
.envrevision used in production in a protected recovery location. Never place secrets in a public repository.
Apply updates during a maintenance window, confirm that backups are current, and check the test library afterward. Do not remove old images or volumes until you know which release the running project uses and which rollback path is available.

- Read the upgrade notes for the Seafile version you are moving to, including database or configuration migrations.
- Verify that the off-site backup completed and that you can access the recovery credentials.
- Record the current image tags, Compose files and environment values.
- Pull the image versions specified by the new manual and validate the rendered Compose configuration.
- Stop or recreate the stack using the documented command; allow migrations to finish while watching logs.
- Check the browser, a desktop sync job, a mobile login and a share link before declaring success.
If the new containers fail, preserve the logs, stop further changes and follow the documented rollback or restore procedure. Do not delete the persistent directories while troubleshooting.
Troubleshoot the failures you are most likely to see

Plan storage and capacity growth
Start with the documented Community baseline, but size for the data you will actually retain. Count current files, expected annual growth, version history, deleted-item retention, previews, database overhead and at least one local recovery copy. More than 50 GB is the documented practical recommendation for growth, not a ceiling.
When storage fills, uploads, previews, database writes and synchronization can fail in different ways. Set a disk-usage alert before the filesystem reaches capacity. If you move the data directories to a larger disk, stop the stack, copy the complete directories with permissions preserved, update the environment paths, validate the Compose configuration, and run the end-to-end test before deleting the original copy.
CPU and memory pressure usually appears during simultaneous uploads, indexing, preview generation or document editing. Increase resources before enabling features that materially change workload, and recheck container health after resizing the VPS.
Community Edition or Professional Edition?
Community Edition is the natural starting point when open-source synchronization and sharing meet your requirements. Professional Edition is a separate proprietary product choice, not merely a larger Community container. Identify the specific enterprise feature, user count and support expectation that justify it before allocating the larger VPS profile.
The Professional documentation allows operation without a paid license for up to three users. That allowance is a limited user count, not permission for an unlimited organization or a substitute for reviewing the current license terms.
Whichever edition you select, keep the operational model the same: persistent data and database volumes, HTTPS, tested backups, controlled upgrades and documented recovery credentials.
