You can run Openfire on a Linux VPS by installing a supported Java runtime, installing the package that matches your distribution, completing the web setup wizard, configuring a database and TLS certificate, and opening only the XMPP ports your deployment needs. Openfire 4.10 requires Java 17; Openfire 4.8 and later require Java 11 or newer. The installers do not include Java, so install it first. Keep the administration interface private, use a DNS name that matches the XMPP certificate, and verify encrypted client logins before inviting users.
Antihost offers Linux VPS plans with full root access, unlimited traffic on a 1 Gbps port and a 14-day free trial.
What you are building
Openfire is an XMPP server for real-time messaging and chat. A typical self-hosted deployment has four layers:

Recommended Free Tools
- Linux VPS: a supported Debian/Ubuntu or RPM-based server with a public address and routine security updates.
- DNS: a stable name for the XMPP service, such as
chat.example.com, resolving to the VPS. - Openfire: the XMPP service, its web administration console, TLS keystores and optional protocol plugins.
- Storage: either Openfire’s embedded database or an external database selected during setup.
The exact CPU, memory and user capacity you need depends on message volume, file transfers, chat rooms, archive retention and enabled plugins. There is no single capacity number that applies to every VPS, so start with a supported instance, monitor it, and resize when measured usage requires it.
Decide the deployment shape before installing
Choose a package format
| Format | Typical location | Best fit | Operational notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Debian package | /usr/share/openfire |
Debian or Ubuntu systems | Uses the distribution’s package database and service integration. Keep the package files and release notes for controlled upgrades. |
| RPM package | /opt/openfire |
RPM-based distributions | Uses RPM tooling and the platform service manager. Confirm that the package matches the operating-system family. |
| tar.gz archive | Commonly extracted below /opt |
Manual or tightly controlled installations | You must manage placement, ownership, upgrades and service integration more explicitly than with a native package. |
Do not mix package formats on one host. A package-managed installation is usually easier to update and audit; an archive gives you more control but also leaves more lifecycle work to you.

Choose embedded or external storage
| Choice | Use it when | Trade-offs |
|---|---|---|
| Embedded database | You are evaluating Openfire, running a small isolated service, or want the fewest moving parts. | Simple initial setup, but database backup, recovery and growth are tied closely to the Openfire host. |
| External database | Your production policy requires separate database backups, independent maintenance, central monitoring or a database service shared with other systems. | More preparation and credentials to protect, but clearer separation of failure domains and backup responsibility. |
The official installation flow permits either an external database or embedded storage. If you select an external database, create the database and account before launching the wizard, apply the least privileges required by the setup, and record the connection details in a password manager.
Decide whether you need federation or browser clients
Native XMPP applications normally connect on TCP 5222. Some older direct-TLS clients use TCP 5223. Browser-based clients using secure BOSH or WebSocket connections use TCP 7443 when that feature is enabled. Server-to-server federation uses TCP 5269 and, where configured, 5270. If your service is a private chat system with no federation and no browser client, do not open those additional ports.
Provision the VPS, DNS and operating-system access
- Select a supported Linux image. Use a current Debian/Ubuntu image for a Debian package or a compatible RPM-based image for an RPM package. Apply the provider’s initial updates before installing application software.
- Assign a stable public address. A changing address will invalidate DNS and can break client discovery and certificates.
- Create a DNS name for XMPP. Publish an A record for the IPv4 address and an AAAA record only when IPv6 is correctly routed and firewalled. The name clients use must be the same name covered by the certificate.
- Add service-discovery records when appropriate. If clients should discover the service automatically, publish XMPP client and server SRV records for your domain and verify their priorities and ports. Clients can still be configured manually with a hostname and port.
- Create a non-root administrator. Use the provider’s console or SSH key authentication, then grant administrative privileges through the operating system’s normal mechanism. Disable password SSH login and direct root login if your provider’s recovery process allows it.
- Set the host clock and hostname. Accurate time is important for certificate validation, logs and federation. Make the VPS hostname stable, but do not confuse the operating-system hostname with the XMPP domain you will enter in the wizard.
Before installing Openfire, check that the DNS name resolves from a network outside the VPS and that reverse DNS is sensible for the public address. A certificate can be valid for the XMPP name even when the VPS hostname is different, provided clients consistently use the certificate name.
Install the required Java runtime
Openfire 4.10 requires Java 17. Openfire 4.8 and later require Java 11 or newer. The Openfire installers do not bundle Java, so the runtime must be installed and available before the package is configured.
Debian or Ubuntu
Refresh package metadata and install a Java 17 runtime on a host intended for Openfire 4.10:
sudo apt update
sudo apt install openjdk-17-jre-headless
java -version
The final command should report a Java 17 runtime. If you are installing an Openfire release that supports Java 11 and your distribution provides that version instead, install the corresponding Java 11 runtime and verify it with the same command.

On a compatible RPM-based system, install the distribution’s Java 17 runtime and verify it:

Some older systems use yum rather than dnf. Use the package manager supplied by the operating-system release, then confirm that java is on the service account’s executable path.

Install Openfire from the matching distribution package
Debian package
- Download the Openfire Debian package through a trusted channel and verify its checksum or signature according to your release-management policy.
- Install the local package with the Debian package manager:
sudo dpkg -i ./openfire*.deb
sudo apt-get -f install
The Debian installation places Openfire under /usr/share/openfire. The dependency-repair command is useful when the package manager reports missing dependencies; review the proposed changes instead of accepting an unrelated upgrade blindly.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
RPM package
- Obtain the RPM that matches the operating-system family and architecture, then verify it according to your normal change-control process.
- Install or upgrade it with:
sudo rpm -Uvh ./openfire*.rpm
RPM installations place Openfire under /opt/openfire. On systems that use DNF for dependency handling, installing the local file through DNF can resolve dependencies more cleanly than invoking RPM directly.
tar.gz archive
- Download and verify the archive.
- Extract it below
/opt:
sudo mkdir -p /opt
sudo tar -xzf ./openfire*.tar.gz -C /opt
With an archive installation, create a dedicated service account, set ownership on the Openfire directory, and register a systemd unit that starts the correct installation path. Package installations normally provide this integration for you, while an archive leaves it to your operating procedure.
Start the service and open the setup wizard
Use the operating system’s service manager rather than launching the server from an interactive shell:
sudo systemctl enable --now openfire
sudo systemctl status openfire
If the service does not start, inspect the unit output and Openfire logs before proceeding. Typical causes are a missing Java runtime, a Java version that is too old, incorrect file ownership, or a port already occupied by another process.
The first-run wizard is available on the default administration ports:
- HTTP:
http://server-address:9090 - HTTPS:
https://server-address:9091
Use the wizard to set the language, server domain, database and administrator account. Reach it from a trusted network or an SSH tunnel instead of exposing the HTTP console to the public internet. For example, from your workstation:

Then browse to http://127.0.0.1:9090 on your workstation. This forwards the local browser connection through SSH while the VPS keeps port 9090 closed externally.
Complete the wizard in the right order
Set the language and server domain
Enter the public XMPP domain exactly as clients will use it, such as chat.example.com. Domain names are not a cosmetic label: they appear in XMPP addresses, certificate names, federation identities and client configuration. Changing the domain after users and rosters exist can require migration work, so decide it before creating accounts.
Select the database
Choose embedded storage or the prepared external database. For an external database, enter the JDBC connection information, database account and password requested by the wizard. Keep the database reachable only from the VPS or a private network; do not open its listener to the entire internet merely to make the wizard work.
Let the wizard initialize the Openfire schema. If initialization fails, check the database name, host, port, credentials, network policy and account permissions. Do not repeatedly rerun initialization against a partially created schema without first checking the database state and logs.
Create the administrator account
Use a unique administrative username and a long, unique password stored in a password manager. This account controls plugins, certificates, user data and server settings. Do not reuse an operating-system or database password.
Finish before enabling client access
Complete the wizard and sign in over the HTTPS console. Keep client ports closed while you correct the domain, database and administrator settings. Restart Openfire after the wizard if requested, then confirm that the service returns automatically after a controlled reboot.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteConfigure TLS for the XMPP domain
TLS protects credentials and message transport during client negotiation. The certificate must cover the hostname clients connect to, using the certificate’s subject alternative names rather than relying on a visually similar name. A certificate for example.com does not automatically cover chat.example.com.
- Obtain a certificate from a trusted certificate authority for the XMPP hostname and keep the private key readable only by the account or service that needs it.
- Import the certificate chain and private key into the keystore format and location used by your Openfire installation, or use the certificate-management controls exposed by the Openfire administration console.
- In the Openfire console, open the TLS or security settings, select the intended certificate and verify that the configured domain matches the certificate name.
- Configure renewal before the certificate expires. A renewed certificate must be imported or reloaded, and the service should be restarted when the deployment’s certificate process requires it.
- Test a client login and inspect the negotiated connection to confirm encryption. Treat certificate warnings, hostname mismatches and incomplete chains as deployment failures, not cosmetic notices.
Keep the HTTPS administration interface on 9091 restricted even after TLS is working. Encrypting a console does not make a publicly exposed administrator login a least-privilege design.

Apply a least-exposure firewall
Open only the listeners required by your users and federation policy. The documented default ports are:
| TCP port | Purpose | Internet exposure |
|---|---|---|
| 5222 | Client-to-server XMPP connections | Open when users connect with ordinary XMPP clients. |
| 5223 | Legacy direct-TLS client connections | Open only if a client population specifically requires it. |
| 7443 | Secure BOSH or WebSocket connections | Open only when those browser or gateway protocols are enabled. |
| 5269 | Server-to-server XMPP federation | Open when federating with other XMPP servers. |
| 5270 | Additional server-to-server connection service | Open only when your federation configuration uses it. |
| 9090 | HTTP administration and setup | Do not expose publicly; keep it on localhost, a tunnel or a trusted management network. |
| 9091 | HTTPS administration | Restrict to trusted administrator addresses. |
For a UFW-managed host, a restrictive baseline can look like this; replace the documentation address with your real fixed administrator address:
sudo ufw default deny incoming
sudo ufw default allow outgoing
sudo ufw allow 22/tcp
sudo ufw allow 5222/tcp
sudo ufw allow from 203.0.113.10 to any port 9091 proto tcp
sudo ufw enable
Add 5223, 7443, 5269 or 5270 only when the corresponding feature is enabled. Keep SSH restricted as tightly as your recovery process permits, and make sure your VPS provider’s firewall and the host firewall agree. A provider-level rule can block a port even when UFW allows it, while a host rule can still block traffic allowed by the provider.
Configure clients and optional federation
Direct XMPP clients
Give users the XMPP domain, account name and password, and specify the server hostname and port when automatic discovery is unavailable. Prefer the encrypted connection mode offered by the client. A successful TCP connection alone does not prove that the certificate name, authentication method and encryption policy are correct.
BOSH and WebSocket clients
Enable the required Openfire support and open 7443 only when a browser client or gateway needs it. Confirm that the browser endpoint uses HTTPS and that its certificate chain is trusted by the browser. Do not enable every transport simply because the port exists; each listener increases configuration and monitoring work.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Server-to-server federation
Federation requires deliberate DNS, certificate and policy configuration. Open 5269 and, if your design uses it, 5270 only after deciding which remote domains are permitted. Test a controlled federation connection before advertising the service widely. If the server is intended for an internal community, leave federation disabled and the ports closed.
Restrict and monitor the administration surface
- Use 9091 for administrator access and block 9090 from the internet.
- Prefer an SSH tunnel, VPN or private management network over a public console.
- Limit 9091 to fixed administrator addresses at both the provider firewall and the VPS firewall.
- Use separate administrator credentials from ordinary chat accounts.
- Review successful and failed logins, service restarts, certificate changes and plugin changes.
- Keep the Linux system, Java runtime and Openfire package on a documented update schedule.
Do not install plugins merely to add features you are not using. Every plugin can add listeners, permissions, storage requirements or an upgrade dependency.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Choose only the Openfire features you need
Openfire support documentation describes optional capabilities including WebSocket, BOSH, multi-user chat, message archive management, HTTP file upload, stream management and push-notification-related support. The exact capabilities and compliance level can differ between core and advanced support options.
Best Value
Map each requirement to a feature before enabling it:
| Requirement | Feature to evaluate | Questions to answer |
|---|---|---|
| Browser-based messaging | WebSocket or BOSH | Which endpoint and certificate will browsers use, and is 7443 reachable only where needed? |
| Group conversations | Multi-user chat | Who may create rooms, invite users and retain room history? |
| Compliance retention | Message archive management | Where is archived data stored, who can search it, and how long is it retained? |
| Large attachment workflow | HTTP file upload | What storage quota, malware scanning and cleanup policy applies? |
| Mobile reliability | Stream management or push support | Which clients support it, and what external notification credentials are required? |
Document the feature, plugin version, configuration owner and rollback plan. Test upgrades with the same combination of features enabled; a plugin that works on a clean installation may fail when combined with custom authentication, an external database or federation.
Verify the deployment before inviting users
Run these checks from an external network and from the VPS itself:
- DNS: the XMPP hostname resolves to the intended public address, and any SRV records return the intended port.
- Service state:
systemctl status openfirereports an active service, and the service starts after a controlled reboot. - Port exposure: 5222 is reachable when client access is required; optional ports are reachable only when enabled; 9090 is not publicly reachable; 9091 is reachable only from an approved administrator network.
- Certificate identity: the certificate contains the hostname clients use, includes a complete trusted chain and has a valid expiry date.
- Encrypted negotiation: a test account can authenticate without a certificate warning, and the client reports an encrypted session.
- Database persistence: create a test account or room, restart Openfire, and confirm that the data remains available.
- Logs: review Openfire, system and firewall logs for authentication failures, database errors, certificate warnings and unexpected connection attempts.
- Recovery: confirm that you know how to restore the database, Openfire configuration and keystore, and that the restore procedure does not depend on the only administrator account being available.
These are deployment checks to perform on your own host. A successful installation wizard by itself does not establish that DNS, TLS, firewall rules or restart recovery are correct.
Backups, upgrades and recovery
Back up the complete service state
For an external database, back up the database with its native, transaction-consistent method and protect the backup separately from the VPS. Also back up Openfire configuration, certificates and private keys, plugin inventories and any file-upload or archive storage. For embedded storage, include the embedded database files in a quiesced or documented backup procedure rather than copying changing files blindly.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteRecord where each package format stores configuration and data. Debian installations use /usr/share/openfire; RPM installations use /opt/openfire; archive installations use the directory you selected below /opt. A backup that contains only the package binaries is not a complete recovery set.
Plan an upgrade
- Read the target Openfire release requirements, especially the Java requirement.
- Take and verify backups of the database, configuration, keystores and user-upload data.
- Record the current package format, installed plugins, enabled listeners and firewall rules.
- Schedule a maintenance window, stop or drain client traffic as appropriate, and upgrade using the same package family.
- Start Openfire, inspect logs, sign in to the HTTPS console and test a client account.
- Check federation, browser transports, uploads, archives and push-related functions if they are enabled.
Never switch from a Debian package to an RPM or archive merely to bypass an upgrade issue. Resolve the package-specific problem or plan a deliberate migration with a tested rollback.
Troubleshoot the failures that matter most
The setup page will not load
- Confirm that Openfire is active with
systemctl status openfire. - Check whether another process already owns 9090 or 9091.
- Verify that you are using the correct address and that the host firewall allows the port from your management network.
- If the console is intentionally private, connect through the SSH tunnel or VPN rather than opening it publicly.
Openfire fails immediately after installation
- Run
java -versionand compare the result with the Openfire release requirement. - Inspect service logs for an incorrect Java path, missing permissions or an invalid configuration file.
- For archive installs, verify ownership and the custom service unit’s working directory.
The wizard cannot connect to the external database
- Test name resolution and network reachability from the VPS to the database host.
- Check the database account, password, port and database name character for character.
- Confirm that the database firewall permits the VPS address and that the account can create or update the required schema.
- Review the database and Openfire logs before changing privileges broadly.
Clients report a certificate warning
- Compare the hostname entered in the client with the certificate’s subject alternative names.
- Install the complete certificate chain, not only the leaf certificate.
- Check the VPS clock and certificate expiry.
- Confirm that Openfire is serving the renewed keystore and restart the service when required by the certificate workflow.
Users can connect but cannot use a feature
Check whether the corresponding listener or plugin is installed and enabled, whether its port is open, and whether the client supports that protocol. A successful connection to 5222 does not imply that BOSH, WebSocket, file upload, multi-user chat or push notifications are configured.
A practical launch sequence
For most first deployments, the safest sequence is:
Recommended Free Tools
- Provision the VPS, DNS and administrative access.
- Install the Java version required by the selected Openfire release.
- Install one matching package format and start the service.
- Reach the wizard privately through 9090 or 9091.
- Set the permanent XMPP domain, choose embedded or external storage, and create the administrator.
- Install the certificate and validate TLS for the same hostname.
- Close 9090 publicly, restrict 9091, and open 5222.
- Add 5223, 7443, 5269 or 5270 only for an identified requirement.
- Create a test account, verify encrypted login and restart recovery, then configure only the plugins your users need.
- Complete backups, monitoring and a documented rollback before production use.
The Bottom Line
A secure Openfire VPS is less about opening every documented port than about matching each listener to a real requirement. Install the correct Java version and package, choose storage deliberately, use a certificate for the exact XMPP hostname, keep administration private, and test DNS, encryption, persistence and restart recovery before onboarding users.
