To self-host Perforce for a Unity or Unreal team, install P4 Server (the current documentation name for what older pages call Helix Core Server) on a Windows, Linux/UNIX, or macOS machine that you control, place its P4ROOT and depot data on persistent backed-up storage, and give every editor a reachable server address, credentials, and correctly mapped workspace. Unity and Unreal both include Perforce integrations, but the engines do not replace the server, authentication, workspace configuration, backups, or licensing decisions.
Antihost offers Linux VPS plans with full root access, unlimited traffic on a 1 Gbps port and a 14-day free trial.
A small team can operate a server without a license within the current free allowance of five users and 20 workspaces. If either limit is exceeded, a 1,000-file limit applies. A standby or replica intended for failover requires its own license. The steps below cover planning, installation, engine setup, licensing, hardware sizing, backups, and the failure modes most likely to interrupt a game project.

Perforce is a centralized version-control system. The server stores file history in depots; clients such as P4V, Unity, and Unreal request revisions, check files out, submit changelists, and retrieve other users’ work. Self-hosting means your team operates the machine, operating system, storage, network endpoint, accounts, updates, backups, and recovery process rather than handing those responsibilities to a managed provider.
Core components
| Component | Purpose | What you must decide |
|---|---|---|
| P4 Server service | Accepts client connections and manages metadata, depots, permissions, and submitted history. | Release, operating system, service account, startup method, and patch schedule. |
P4ROOT and depot storage |
Holds server metadata and versioned project content, including large binary assets. | Capacity, growth headroom, performance, redundancy, and backup retention. |
| Network endpoint | Address and port used by P4V and engine plug-ins, for example 192.168.0.1:1666. |
DNS or fixed IP, firewall exposure, VPN or private routing, and whether SSL is required. |
| Users and workspaces | Identify people and map depot paths to local project directories. | Account roles, naming convention, local roots, and protections. |
| Client applications | P4V and the built-in Unity or Unreal integrations provide day-to-day checkout and submit operations. | Installation, authentication, workspace selection, and engine-specific settings. |
The official installation material supports Windows, UNIX/Linux, and macOS, but the exact supported operating-system versions depend on the P4 Server release you choose. Check that release’s notes before installing; do not assume that an operating system supported by an older server release remains supported by a newer one.

Plan the host before installing
Choose a supported operating system and release
- Select the P4 Server release you intend to run.
- Read the associated release notes and confirm the exact Windows, UNIX/Linux, or macOS versions supported by that release.
- Record the release, operating-system version, installation path, service account, and administrator contact. This information makes future upgrades and recovery less error-prone.
Use a dedicated physical or virtual machine with a stable network identity. A virtual machine is acceptable when its virtual disks are persistent and included in the same backup and restore plan as a physical host. Avoid an ephemeral build runner or a developer workstation that may sleep, change addresses, or be reinstalled without notice.
Lay out persistent storage
Put P4ROOT and depot files on storage that survives a service restart and is covered by a tested backup plan. There is no official one-size-fits-all CPU, memory, disk, IOPS, or bandwidth specification. Size the host from the repository’s current size, expected binary-asset growth, concurrent users, submit and get traffic, workspace count, retention period, and recovery-time objective.
- Measure the existing depot, archive size, and daily change rate if you are migrating from another server.
- Reserve growth space for imported history, generated metadata, and temporary backup files; a disk that is full can stop submissions.
- Keep operating-system files separate from depot data when practical, so a system-volume failure does not obscure the repository volume.
- Use storage with predictable latency for metadata and large-file transfers. Capacity alone does not describe performance.
Design the network endpoint
Give the service a DNS name or reserved IP address and a documented port. The common non-SSL form is host:1666; SSL endpoints use the documented ssl: prefix, such as ssl:perforce.example.internal:1666. Permit the port only from intended clients through the host firewall, VPN, or private network. Do not expose an administrative service to the public internet merely to avoid configuring a secure route for remote teammates.
Decide account and workspace conventions
Create one standard user per person and a workspace for each working copy that needs its own mapping. Keep workspace roots aligned with the actual Unity or Unreal project directories. Separate service or operator accounts from human accounts where automation is needed. Standard users consume licenses; operator users are limited administrative identities, and service users authenticate server-to-server operations without consuming standard-user licenses.

Install and initialize P4 Server
Prepare the machine
- Apply operating-system updates, set the correct time zone and clock synchronization, and create the persistent volume for
P4ROOTand depots. - Reserve the server’s DNS name or IP address and document the client port.
- Create firewall rules that allow the P4 port from approved team networks and deny unrelated inbound traffic.
- Create a service identity with only the filesystem permissions required for the server’s data directories. Keep administrative credentials separate.
Install the service
Install the P4 Server package for the selected operating system, then configure it to start through that platform’s service manager. On UNIX-like systems, the installation guide’s daemon example is:
p4d -r /specify/path/to/P4ROOT -d
Replace the example path with the real P4ROOT location. On Windows or macOS, use the operating system’s documented service mechanism rather than launching an interactive process from a user’s desktop session. Confirm that the process starts after a reboot and that its log location is included in monitoring.
Recommended Free Tools
Create the first administrator and protections
- Connect locally with P4V or the command-line client while the service is running.
- Create the initial administrative account and set a strong password or approved authentication method.
- Define protections that grant ordinary users only the depot paths and actions they need.
- Create each user’s account and workspace, specifying the server endpoint, workspace root, depot mapping, and line-ending or file-type settings appropriate to the project.
- Test a login, sync, edit, and submit with a non-administrative account.
Do not open Unity or Unreal first and guess at the connection settings. Verify the endpoint, authentication, and workspace in P4V. The Unreal workflow in particular expects the project to be opened in P4V first so that the user is authenticated and the workspace is recognized.
Configure Unreal Engine
Unreal Engine has a built-in source-control extension that integrates with P4. The workspace selected in the editor must map to the project currently open; a workspace mapped to another project can make changes appear untracked or cause the wrong files to be updated.

- [Dont Hesite to Order] 24 hours customer services and professional technology team are standing by
Connect the project
- Open P4V and log in to the server endpoint. Select the workspace whose root contains the Unreal project you will open.
- Open that project in Unreal Engine.
- Open the Revision Control or Source Control menu and choose Perforce.
- Enter the server address and port, adding the
ssl:prefix when the server uses SSL. - Enter the Perforce user name and the exact workspace name selected in P4V.
- Connect and verify that the editor reports the expected workspace and shows source-control status on project files.
Use checkout and submit safely
- Check out files before editing, or enable Prompt for Checkout on Asset Modification so the editor asks when an asset needs to be opened for edit.
- Submit from the Revision Control menu after reviewing the files and entering a meaningful changelist description.
- Use an asset’s context menu for compare, revert, history, and Get Latest operations.
Handle large updates and Unreal file moves
For a small group of assets, the editor integration is convenient. For a large update, close Unreal and get the latest revisions through P4V. The official Unreal guidance warns that P4V can become unresponsive while fetching if Unreal remains open at the same time.
Reorganize Unreal files inside the editor rather than moving them only in the operating system. Editor-managed moves update references and redirectors. After a reorganization, update redirector references before submitting so teammates do not receive stale paths or broken asset links.

Configure Unity
Unity includes a Perforce source-control extension. The Unity project directory must be inside the selected workspace root and depot mapping.
Enter connection settings
- In Unity, open Edit > Project Settings > Version Control.
- Set Mode to Perforce.
- Enter the Perforce user name, password, workspace name, and server address with port. Include the SSL form when applicable.
- Enable Automatic Add if newly created project files should be added automatically, and enable Overlay Icons if status badges are useful in the Project window.
- Save the settings and confirm that existing assets show the expected source-control state.
Check out, update, and submit
Right-click an asset to use Check Out, Get Latest, Submit, or Revert. To submit several assets together, open Window > Asset Management > Version Control, review the changelist, add a description, and submit it as one unit. Before submitting a scene or prefab change, make sure dependent files and intentionally added assets are included.

Licensing, free limits, and failover
Determine licensing before installation. Under the limits documented for Perforce Software 2024.1, a server may be used at no cost for up to five users and 20 workspaces with no file-count limit while both limits are respected. Up to three graph-depot repositories are also allowed under that allowance.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches| Condition | Effect |
|---|---|
| Five or fewer users and 20 or fewer workspaces | No license file is required under the documented allowance; no file-count limit is imposed by that allowance. |
| More than five users or more than 20 workspaces | A 1,000-file limit is enforced unless the server is licensed. |
| Standby or replica intended to take over after failure | Requires its own license; it is not covered merely because the primary server is licensed or free. |
| Operator or service account | Restricted role that does not consume a standard-user license, unlike an ordinary standard user. |
When requesting a license, provide the number of standard users and the host address plus port. For a cloud-hosted instance, the licensing request must use the instance’s private IP address. An FQDN or MAC address is appropriate only when the documented address-stability conditions for that installation are met.
A previously unlicensed installation must be stopped and restarted after a license is added. An already licensed server generally does not need a restart, although p4 admin restart may be used after a license change.
Backups, recovery, and daily operations
Back up more than the depot files
A usable recovery plan covers P4ROOT metadata, depot content, configuration, protections, user and workspace definitions, and the procedures needed to restore them together. Choose a schedule from the team’s recovery-point objective and the rate of change; the official material does not prescribe a universal interval.
Best Value
- Keep at least one backup copy on storage independent of the server host.
- Protect backups from accidental deletion and unauthorized access.
- Record the P4 Server release and operating-system version with each backup set.
- Perform a restore drill to a separate test host and verify that a client can log in, see history, and sync a representative project.
- Document who can declare an outage, restore the service, change DNS, and communicate the resulting revision point to the team.
Monitor the service
Monitor process availability, disk capacity, backup success, log errors, authentication failures, and network reachability. Alert before the depot volume is full. Review growth periodically because binary-heavy projects can expand much faster than source-code-only repositories.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Plan for failover honestly
A replica can reduce downtime, but it does not remove the need for tested recovery procedures or licensing. A failover server intended to take over needs its own license. Define how clients will receive the replacement endpoint, how recent writes are verified, and how the primary will be prevented from accepting conflicting writes after a takeover.
How to size the hardware without a misleading fixed specification
No official source sets a mandatory server model or a universal CPU, RAM, disk, IOPS, or bandwidth target. A practical sizing exercise starts with measurements and workload assumptions rather than a generic “game server” specification.
| Input | Why it affects sizing | What to measure or estimate |
|---|---|---|
| Depot and history size | Determines capacity and backup duration. | Current bytes, historical growth, and imported branches. |
| Binary assets | Large textures, audio, cinematics, and builds increase storage and transfer demand. | Largest files, daily binary change volume, and peak sync size. |
| Concurrent activity | Many simultaneous syncs and submits compete for CPU, memory, storage, and network. | Peak active users and expected release-day bursts. |
| Retention and recovery goals | Long retention and short recovery windows require more capacity and faster backup storage. | How far back history and backups must remain available, and maximum acceptable downtime. |
| Remote access | Distributed teams depend on upload and download bandwidth and latency. | Peak WAN throughput, VPN capacity, and teammate locations. |
Start with a modest dedicated host only when these measurements support it, then observe real latency, queueing, disk usage, and backup time. Scale storage and network performance before buying CPU that the workload does not use.
Troubleshoot the common setup failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | Action |
|---|---|---|
| P4V cannot connect | Wrong address or port, stopped service, DNS problem, or firewall rule. | Test the endpoint from the client, confirm the service is running, verify the port is allowed only from the intended network, and retry with the exact server string. |
| Login works but files are missing | Workspace root or depot mapping does not include the project. | Inspect the workspace mapping in P4V and place the local root over the actual Unity or Unreal project directory. |
| Unreal does not recognize changes | The selected workspace maps to a different project than the one open in the editor. | Close the project, select the matching workspace in P4V, open the project from that working copy, and reconnect the Perforce provider. |
| Unity creates files that are not under version control | Automatic Add is disabled or the workspace mapping excludes the directory. | Enable Automatic Add when appropriate and verify the mapping; review generated files before submitting. |
| Files are read-only or cannot be edited | The file is not checked out, another user holds the lock, or permissions deny the action. | Use Check Out, inspect history and ownership in P4V, and correct protections rather than changing filesystem permissions blindly. |
| P4V appears frozen during an Unreal update | A large fetch is running while Unreal remains open. | Close Unreal, perform the large Get Latest operation in P4V, then reopen the project. |
| Submissions stop after a team grows | The five-user or 20-workspace allowance was exceeded and the 1,000-file limit is active. | Reduce users or workspaces only if that reflects the real team, otherwise obtain and install the required license. |
| A restored server has files but no usable history | Only depot content was copied; metadata or protections were omitted. | Restore the complete P4ROOT and depot set from a tested backup and validate login, history, mappings, and sync on a test client. |
Self-hosting versus a managed host
Self-hosting is a good fit when the team needs control over network placement, data residency, maintenance windows, or storage design and has someone responsible for operations. A managed host can be preferable when the team does not want to patch a server, maintain backups, monitor capacity, or rehearse failover. Neither option removes Perforce licensing obligations.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →| Decision factor | Self-hosted | Managed infrastructure |
|---|---|---|
| Network and data control | You choose the host, routes, firewall, and storage location. | Control depends on the provider’s regions, network model, and contracts. |
| Operating effort | Your team installs updates, monitors the service, and responds to incidents. | The provider may operate the host, but you still own project configuration and access decisions. |
| Backups and failover | You design, pay for, test, and document them. | Review exactly what is included; a provider’s infrastructure redundancy is not automatically a recoverable Perforce backup. |
| Latency for distributed teammates | Depends on your uplink, VPN, and geographic location. | Can improve reachability when the provider has a suitable region, but measure large-binary transfer performance. |
| Licensing | Standard-user count and any failover replica must be licensed as applicable. | Cloud-hosted licensing still requires the documented private instance IP and the appropriate user count. |
| Recovery time | Depends on your spare capacity, backup quality, and runbook. | Depends on the provider’s recovery commitments and your ability to restore Perforce data and client endpoints. |
A practical launch checklist
- Release notes confirm the operating-system version.
- Persistent
P4ROOTand depot storage has capacity and a tested backup destination. - DNS or a reserved IP and the client port are documented.
- Firewall rules restrict access to intended clients.
- Administrator, standard, operator, and service accounts have appropriate roles.
- Each workspace root and depot mapping contains the correct Unity or Unreal project.
- P4V login, sync, edit, and submit work before engine integration is enabled.
- Unreal uses the workspace matching the open project; Unity has the intended Automatic Add and Overlay Icons settings.
- The team understands the five-user, 20-workspace, 1,000-file, and failover-license boundaries.
- Backups, restore drills, monitoring, and an outage contact are in place.
The Bottom Line
Self-hosting Perforce for Unity or Unreal is primarily an operations project: install a supported P4 Server release, provide reliable storage and a restricted endpoint, map every workspace to the right project, and test recovery before the repository becomes critical. The engines’ built-in integrations make daily checkouts and submits straightforward, but they do not replace licensing, backups, security, or failover planning.
