How to Self-Host a Jellyfin Media Server on a VPS

A practical, end-to-end guide to running Jellyfin on a VPS, from choosing CPU, RAM, storage and bandwidth to Docker deployment, secure HTTPS, hardware transcoding, backups and troubleshooting.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Run Jellyfin on a supported Linux VPS image or the official Jellyfin container, keep its configuration and cache on persistent storage, and expose it through a reverse proxy that terminates HTTPS. Choose CPU, RAM, disk, upload capacity, and—only when needed—a GPU according to the number of viewers and the files their devices cannot direct-play.

This guide covers a reproducible Docker deployment, a native-package alternative, storage and network sizing, secure public access, hardware transcoding, backups, upgrades, and the failure modes that most often interrupt streaming.

What a VPS Jellyfin deployment looks like

A VPS gives Jellyfin an always-on Linux host in a data center. Your clients connect over the internet, while the server reads media from local virtual disks, attached block storage, a mounted network share, or a cloud-storage service. Jellyfin itself can operate independently from the internet after installation; the internet is needed for remote clients, metadata lookups, updates, and any external storage you use.

A dependable layout has four layers:

  • Operating system: A supported Debian or Ubuntu release is the simplest starting point. Jellyfin also documents packages for other Linux distributions.
  • Jellyfin service: Use the official container for repeatable deployments, or install the native package and let the host service manager run it.
  • Persistent data: Keep the configuration database, artwork, plugins, logs, and transcoding cache outside an ephemeral container layer.
  • Public edge: Point a DNS name at the VPS and place a reverse proxy in front of Jellyfin. The proxy handles certificates and forwards requests to the private Jellyfin listener.

Do not expose every service on the VPS. The public firewall should normally allow SSH only from administration addresses and web traffic on ports 80 and 443. Jellyfin’s direct listener can remain reachable only from the proxy and, if required, a private administration network.

Size the VPS for your actual streams

There is no universal “number of streams per core” figure for Jellyfin. Capacity changes with resolution, codec, subtitles, client support, storage speed, network conditions, and whether each session is direct-playing or transcoding. Treat Jellyfin’s published hardware figures as starting points, then validate with your own clients and media.

Resource Published starting point How to apply it
System and Jellyfin disk 100 GB SSD for the operating system, Jellyfin files, and transcoding cache Reserve additional capacity for media, metadata growth, snapshots, and temporary transcode files. A media library is normally separate from this baseline.
Memory About 8 GB for an average deployment; a headless Linux server may work with 4 GB Add memory for several concurrent users, large metadata libraries, monitoring agents, databases, or other services on the VPS.
Upload bandwidth At least 20 Mbps for remote access That is a floor, not a guarantee. Sum the expected bitrates of simultaneous remote streams and leave headroom for protocol overhead and other VPS traffic.
Network interface Gigabit Ethernet or faster is recommended The provider’s sustained egress limit and transfer allowance matter more than the advertised port speed.
Transcoding area Largest media file multiplied by the maximum number of concurrent streams users will consume Use the result as a practical estimate for temporary transcoding storage, then monitor free space during peak use.

Direct play versus transcoding

Direct play sends a compatible file to the client without converting the video. It uses the least CPU and usually the least power. A conversion is triggered when a device cannot decode the video or audio codec, the bitrate exceeds a client or network limit, or subtitle handling requires a burn-in. The same movie can therefore be cheap for one viewer and expensive for another.

Before buying a larger plan, inventory the devices you will actually use: televisions, streaming boxes, phones, browsers, and game consoles. Record which of your files are HEVC or AV1, which audio formats are accepted, and whether image-based or styled subtitles force video conversion. A few test sessions reveal more than a generic stream-count estimate.

When a GPU-enabled VPS is justified

Select a plan with a GPU when remote clients regularly need video transcoding, when HDR tone-mapping is part of your use case, or when CPU-only conversion would consume too much of the plan. If nearly all clients direct-play your library, paying for a virtual GPU adds complexity without improving those sessions.

A provider’s GPU label is not proof of usable acceleration. The host must expose the device, the correct driver must be installed, and Jellyfin must be configured to use it. Confirm all three before treating the GPU as capacity.

Choose Docker or a native installation

Decision axis Docker or Compose Native package
Repeatability Image tags and a Compose file describe the deployment and make it easy to recreate. Depends on the distribution package and host configuration.
Upgrades and rollback Pull a tested image tag, recreate the container, and revert to the previous tag if necessary. Use the distribution’s package manager and its available version history.
Backups Persistent volumes or bind mounts can be copied independently of the container. Back up the package-managed configuration and data directories.
Host integration Adds a container runtime and requires explicit device, network, and mount configuration. Runs close to the operating system’s service manager and logging tools.
GPU and device access Requires device pass-through; NVIDIA also needs the NVIDIA driver and NVIDIA Container Toolkit. Still requires host drivers, but there is no container boundary to configure.
Troubleshooting Inspect container logs, mounts, image tags, and runtime settings. Inspect the service unit, package files, permissions, and system logs.

For a new VPS, Docker or Compose is usually the easier operational choice because the service definition, mounts, and image version can be documented in one place. A native install is sensible when you already manage the host with system packages, want fewer layers, or need the most direct integration with the service manager. Jellyfin officially documents both approaches. FreeBSD and derivatives are not officially supported because of .NET compatibility limitations, so do not select a FreeBSD VPS for this deployment.

Prepare the VPS before installing Jellyfin

1. Select the operating system and access method

Choose a current, supported 64-bit Debian or Ubuntu image from your VPS provider. Create a non-root administrator with sudo access, install SSH keys, and disable password authentication after confirming key-based login works. Apply operating-system updates before adding Jellyfin.

sudo apt update
sudo apt full-upgrade -y
sudo adduser jellyadmin
sudo usermod -aG sudo jellyadmin

Use your provider’s console or recovery access to avoid locking yourself out while changing SSH settings. Keep a second administrative session open until the firewall and SSH changes have been tested.

2. Set the hostname, time, and basic monitoring

Give the VPS a stable hostname, enable network time synchronisation, and install a lightweight method to observe CPU, memory, disk space, and network traffic. Jellyfin failures caused by a full transcode directory or exhausted memory are much easier to diagnose when those metrics are retained.

3. Build a firewall policy

Allow established connections, SSH from trusted addresses, and web traffic on ports 80 and 443. Allow Jellyfin’s listener only from the reverse-proxy process or a private management network. If you need a temporary direct test, open the listener for your own address and close it immediately afterward.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not assume a cloud security group replaces the VPS’s local firewall. Configure both layers, and document the final rules so a rebuild does not accidentally publish an unprotected listener.

Deploy Jellyfin with Docker Compose

The following pattern keeps the server state on the host and leaves the media location explicit. Replace the example paths with mounts appropriate to your storage layout. The image tag should be pinned to a version you have chosen rather than silently following an untested moving tag.

1. Install Docker and Compose

Use the Docker instructions for your Linux distribution, then verify that the daemon starts at boot and that your administrator can run Docker. A package installation from the distribution may lag behind Docker’s own repository, so check the version and security-update policy you intend to maintain.

sudo systemctl enable --now docker
sudo docker version
sudo docker compose version

2. Create persistent directories

sudo mkdir -p /srv/jellyfin/config /srv/jellyfin/cache /srv/jellyfin/media
sudo chown -R $USER:$USER /srv/jellyfin

Put media on a separate attached disk, network share, or cloud-storage mount when the VPS boot disk is not large enough. Mount that storage before starting the container and use a stable path such as /srv/jellyfin/media. A missing mount can otherwise make Jellyfin see an empty directory and create confusing library results.

3. Write the Compose file

services:
  jellyfin:
    image: jellyfin/jellyfin:latest
    container_name: jellyfin
    user: 1000:1000
    ports:
      - 8096:8096
    volumes:
      - /srv/jellyfin/config:/config
      - /srv/jellyfin/cache:/cache
      - /srv/jellyfin/media:/media:ro
    restart: unless-stopped

The default HTTP listener is normally mapped to port 8096 in this example. Keep it private when a reverse proxy is in use by binding it to the loopback address instead, for example 127.0.0.1:8096:8096, provided the proxy runs on the same VPS. If you need DLNA, Jellyfin’s container documentation specifies host networking; host mode changes the exposure model and should be evaluated before enabling it.

Set the container user to an account that can read the media and write the configuration and cache directories. If the numeric UID differs on your host, adjust ownership rather than granting world-writable permissions.

4. Start and complete the setup wizard

docker compose pull
docker compose up -d
docker compose logs --tail=100 jellyfin

Open the listener from an administration network and complete the wizard: select the display language, create the first administrator, add libraries using the container paths (for example, /media/Movies rather than the host path), and set the preferred metadata language and country. Verify that the configuration and cache directories gain files; that confirms the mounts are persistent.

5. Pin and document the image

After confirming a release, replace latest with the exact Jellyfin image tag you intend to run. Record the tag, Compose file, environment variables, mount points, firewall rules, and proxy configuration in your deployment notes. A documented tag makes rollback a deliberate operation rather than a guess.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Install Jellyfin natively instead

A native installation follows the same architecture without a container. Add Jellyfin’s official package repository for your distribution, install the server package, enable its system service, and place the configuration and cache on persistent disk. The exact repository commands vary by Debian or Ubuntu release, so follow Jellyfin’s current installation page for the package instructions that match your image.

After installation, check the service and its listening sockets:

sudo systemctl enable --now jellyfin
sudo systemctl status jellyfin
sudo journalctl -u jellyfin --since today

Use the native service account for media read access and for writing metadata. If media is mounted from another system, make the mount available before the Jellyfin service starts and configure the mount to recover cleanly after a network interruption. Native and container deployments should not share the same configuration directory; choose one method for a given server unless you are deliberately migrating.

Attach and protect your media storage

Local or attached block storage

Local virtual disks generally offer the most predictable metadata and thumbnail performance. Format and mount them with a stable filesystem path, enable automatic mounting by UUID, and leave free space for filesystem maintenance and temporary transcoding. Keep the operating-system disk separate from a rapidly growing media volume when your provider supports additional block storage.

Network shares and cloud storage

Jellyfin can read media from a network share or a cloud-storage service mounted on the host. Confirm that the mount survives a reboot, presents correct file ownership, and provides enough read throughput for simultaneous streams. Check the provider’s egress pricing, request limits, and acceptable-use terms before placing a large library off-server. A mount that stalls can look like a Jellyfin playback bug even when the application is healthy.

Permissions and library paths

Grant Jellyfin read-only access to media unless you explicitly need it to modify files. Keep configuration, metadata, and cache writable by the Jellyfin service account. Use separate library directories for films, series, music, and photos so scanners cannot misclassify content. Do not expose the configuration directory through the reverse proxy or a file-sharing service.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

Put HTTPS and a reverse proxy in front

Jellyfin recommends terminating HTTPS at a separate reverse proxy. The proxy becomes the public entry point, manages certificates, forwards a subdomain to the private Jellyfin listener, and can centralize rate limits and access logs.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

1. Create DNS and certificate prerequisites

  1. Register or use a domain you control and create an A record for the VPS’s IPv4 address; add an AAAA record only if IPv6 is correctly configured and firewalled.
  2. Allow ports 80 and 443 through the provider firewall and the VPS firewall.
  3. Install a reverse-proxy server and an ACME certificate client. Obtain a certificate for the Jellyfin hostname, then configure automatic renewal and test the renewal hook.
  4. Keep Jellyfin’s HTTP listener bound to localhost or a private interface so users cannot bypass the proxy.

2. Forward the required headers

Your proxy must pass the original host, scheme, and client address. A minimal Nginx-style location has the following shape; adapt syntax to the proxy you operate:

server {
    listen 443 ssl http2;
    server_name media.example.net;

    ssl_certificate     /etc/letsencrypt/live/media.example.net/fullchain.pem;
    ssl_certificate_key /etc/letsencrypt/live/media.example.net/privkey.pem;

    location / {
        proxy_pass http://127.0.0.1:8096;
        proxy_set_header Host $host;
        proxy_set_header X-Real-IP $remote_addr;
        proxy_set_header X-Forwarded-For $proxy_add_x_forwarded_for;
        proxy_set_header X-Forwarded-Proto $scheme;
        proxy_set_header X-Forwarded-Host $host;
        proxy_set_header Upgrade $http_upgrade;
        proxy_set_header Connection "upgrade";
        proxy_buffering off;
    }
}

WebSocket forwarding and disabled buffering help the web client maintain a responsive session. The exact directives differ among proxy products; use the equivalent settings in the proxy you select.

3. Tell Jellyfin which proxies are trusted

When a proxy forwards a request, Jellyfin sees the proxy’s address rather than the viewer’s address. Add every proxy IP address or trusted private range to Jellyfin’s Known Proxies setting. This allows Jellyfin to interpret X-Forwarded-For, X-Forwarded-Proto, and X-Forwarded-Host correctly. An incorrect list can break local-versus-remote detection and access controls; trusting arbitrary internet addresses is unsafe.

4. Protect proxy logs

Authentication data can appear in request URLs, including api_key parameters. Restrict log-file permissions, redact sensitive query strings, and avoid recording full URLs when they are not needed for troubleshooting. Rotate logs and remove old copies from backups that are accessible to more people than the Jellyfin administrators.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Configure hardware acceleration safely

Jellyfin supports Intel Quick Sync Video, NVIDIA NVDEC/NVENC, AMD AMF, Intel and AMD VA-API on Linux, Apple VideoToolbox, and Rockchip RKMPP. If no usable hardware decoder is available, Jellyfin falls back to software decoding on the CPU.

Intel or AMD on Linux

The VPS host must expose the render device, commonly under /dev/dri, to the Jellyfin process or container. Install a driver stack supported by the host operating system, pass the device into a container when applicable, then select the matching acceleration method in Jellyfin’s playback settings. Verify that the service account can access the render group without granting broad device permissions.

NVIDIA

An NVIDIA deployment requires a compatible host driver and the NVIDIA Container Toolkit before the container can see the GPU. Pass the GPU through to the container, select NVDEC/NVENC in Jellyfin, and confirm that the server log reports hardware decoding and encoding rather than a silent software fallback.

Validate the result with a real session

  1. Play a file that your client can direct-play and confirm the dashboard reports direct play.
  2. Force a transcode by selecting a lower quality or using a client that cannot decode the source codec.
  3. Check the playback details and server logs for the selected decoder and encoder.
  4. Watch CPU, GPU, memory, disk I/O, and network graphs while more than one session runs.

Do not convert a GPU model into a promised stream count. Driver versions, virtualisation limits, codec profiles, subtitles, HDR tone-mapping, and the provider’s allocation policy all affect the result.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Back up, upgrade, and operate the server

Back up the right data

Back up Jellyfin’s configuration and metadata separately from the media library. The configuration contains users, libraries, plugins, playback settings, and database state; losing it can force a lengthy rebuild even when the video files remain intact. Copy backups to storage outside the VPS and encrypt them when they contain account data or viewing history.

Document the media mount paths, image tag or package version, environment variables, firewall rules, DNS records, certificate paths, reverse-proxy configuration, and GPU device mappings. A backup that cannot be restored without rediscovering these details is incomplete.

Upgrade a container deployment

  1. Check release notes and confirm a recent configuration backup.
  2. Pull the selected image tag without deleting persistent directories.
  3. Recreate the container with Compose.
  4. Review logs, sign in, scan a small library, and test direct play and transcoding.
  5. Keep the previous image tag available until the new release has passed your checks.
docker compose pull
docker compose up -d
docker compose logs --tail=200 jellyfin

Never use a container-removal command that also deletes named volumes or bind-mounted directories unless you have a verified restore.

Upgrade a native deployment

Take the same configuration backup, update the operating-system package lists, upgrade Jellyfin through the supported repository, and inspect the service log after restart. Schedule upgrades outside your normal viewing period and retain the package version or snapshot needed for rollback according to your VPS provider’s options.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Monitor the limits that matter

  • Disk free space on the operating-system and transcode volumes.
  • Read latency and throughput on the media mount.
  • CPU saturation during software transcodes.
  • GPU utilisation and encoder-session limits when acceleration is enabled.
  • RAM and swap pressure.
  • Outbound bandwidth, transfer quotas, and unexpected egress charges.
  • Certificate expiry and reverse-proxy renewal failures.

Troubleshoot by symptom

Symptom Likely cause Checks and corrective action
The setup page is unreachable Container stopped, wrong bind address, or firewall rule missing Check docker compose ps or systemctl status jellyfin, verify the listener with a local connection, and inspect both cloud and host firewall rules.
Libraries are empty after a restart Media mount was not mounted, or the container path does not match the library path Confirm the storage mount before Jellyfin starts, inspect the container’s mounts, and use the path visible inside the container.
Remote playback buffers Insufficient upload capacity, slow storage, or a transcode exceeding CPU/GPU capacity Compare the session bitrate with sustained upload, inspect disk and processor graphs, and test the same file with direct play.
Every session uses the CPU Hardware device is missing, driver or permissions are wrong, or the codec is unsupported by the accelerator Check device mappings, driver logs, service-account groups, and Jellyfin playback details; confirm software fallback is not being mistaken for acceleration.
Jellyfin reports the wrong client address Proxy IPs are absent or incorrect in Known Proxies Add only the actual proxy addresses, verify forwarded headers, and retest local and remote access.
HTTPS works but WebSocket features fail Upgrade headers or proxy buffering are not configured Apply the proxy’s WebSocket equivalent, reload the proxy, and inspect its error log while reconnecting the client.
Disk fills during playback Transcode cache growth, verbose logs, or metadata expansion Measure each directory, increase or relocate the cache, rotate logs, and apply the documented largest-file-times-concurrent-streams estimate.
Users see certificate warnings Hostname does not match the certificate, renewal failed, or DNS points elsewhere Check the certificate names, DNS records, proxy configuration, and automated renewal output before replacing certificates manually.

A practical launch checklist

  • Supported Linux image selected; FreeBSD avoided because it is not officially supported.
  • Non-root administration, SSH keys, operating-system updates, and recovery access configured.
  • CPU, memory, 100 GB system SSD baseline, upload bandwidth, and transcode space sized for expected sessions.
  • Media storage mounted persistently and tested after reboot.
  • Docker volumes or native data directories separated from disposable layers.
  • Firewall restricted to administration and required web ports.
  • DNS points to the VPS and HTTPS certificate renewal is automated.
  • Reverse-proxy headers are forwarded and proxy addresses are entered under Known Proxies.
  • GPU drivers, device pass-through, and an actual hardware-transcode session verified if acceleration is needed.
  • Configuration, metadata, deployment files, and recovery instructions backed up away from the VPS.
  • Direct play, forced transcode, subtitles, multiple users, and remote access tested before sharing the hostname.
