Back up anything you want to keep, remove physical SIM and memory cards, then use the phone’s built-in erase or factory-reset process before it leaves your control. A reset does not erase removable cards, and no general guide can promise forensic-proof deletion on every model. If you cannot unlock or erase the phone, ask its maker and repair provider for a device-specific procedure.
Before you erase the phone
Choose the right handoff path first: repair, transfer to another person, or recycling. Save anything you want to keep and confirm that your backup is accessible from the account or storage method you used. A reset removes local data and installed apps, including their local app data; information backed up to an account may be restorable.

- Make sure you know the phone’s passcode or PIN and the credentials for the account currently signed in. Android may require both during or after a reset. Apple may require the Apple Account password if Find My is enabled.
- Remove the physical SIM and any removable SD or memory card. Keep them, transfer them to another device, or dispose of them separately. A phone reset does not clear these cards.
- Handle an eSIM through the device’s own settings or the platform’s erase prompts; eSIM steps vary by model and carrier.
- Use the manufacturer’s full erase procedure rather than deleting photos and files one at a time. Menu names and steps vary by model and operating-system version.
The FTC’s phone-disposal checklist also recommends backing up data and removing personal information before getting rid of a device.

Erase an iPhone or iPad
Apple’s instructions, published June 12, 2026, put backup and transfer first, followed by signing out and erasing the device. Use the steps for your specific device and software version:

- Back up the device and transfer any information you want to keep.
- Sign out of your Apple Account as directed by Apple.
- Open Settings > General > Transfer or Reset [device] > Erase All Content and Settings, then follow the on-screen prompts.
- If prompted on an eSIM device, choose whether to erase the eSIM profile. If you are moving to a non-Apple phone, deregister iMessage as Apple advises.
Erasing turns off Find My and Activation Lock. The process can require the device passcode and, when Find My is enabled, Apple Account credentials. See Apple’s current instructions for preparing an iPhone or iPad for sale, transfer, or trade-in.
Reset an Android phone
Google says a factory reset removes all data from the phone. Before starting, back up wanted data and verify the Google Account username and password and the screen-lock credentials. Google notes that account-backed information can be restored, but apps and their data are uninstalled.

- Check the backup and confirm you can sign in to the Google Account on the device.
- Follow the factory-reset instructions for the exact phone maker and model. Android menus and procedures differ, and Google directs users to manufacturers for device-specific steps.
- Keep the device charged and connected as the applicable reset instructions require. Google’s described process recommends at least 70% battery charge and network connectivity, and says the reset can take up to an hour.
- Complete the reset and follow any prompts. If you recently changed your Google Account password, Google advises waiting 24 hours before resetting.
Some steps in Google’s current help apply only to Android 14 and later. Check Google’s Android factory-reset instructions and the handset maker’s support page for current, model-specific details.

Repair, transfer, or recycling: what changes?
Before a repair
When practical, erase the phone before handing it over, but do not lose needed data or disrupt the agreed repair process. There is no single repair-mode or service-preparation workflow established for every brand and model. If the phone is locked, damaged, or cannot complete an erase, ask the manufacturer and repair provider which supported privacy-preserving procedure applies. Do not assume a remote wipe has completed unless you can verify it.

Before selling, trading in, or giving it away
Complete the platform’s erase process and account-related steps so the next owner is not blocked by an account lock. On an iPhone or iPad, Apple says its erase process turns off Find My and Activation Lock. Follow the relevant manufacturer instructions for Android account protections and the exact handset.
Before recycling
After erasing, use a manufacturer or retailer take-back program or a local electronics recycling facility. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency recommends deleting personal information, checking local options, and keeping devices with lithium-ion batteries out of household garbage and recycling bins. Its electronics donation and recycling page lists informational resources and facilities; listings are not endorsements. If the phone will not power on or cannot be erased, ask the recycler about its handling process rather than treating a failed reset as verified deletion.

What a factory reset can—and cannot—assure
A manufacturer reset is the practical consumer procedure for clearing a functioning phone, but its security properties depend on the device’s implementation, encryption, and storage. It is not sound to promise that every reset on every old or unusual handset makes recovery impossible.
NIST’s 2023 mobile-device guidance describes cryptographic erase: sanitizing the encryption key so encrypted user data becomes unreadable. It says, in an enterprise context, that whole-device encryption should be activated before deployment and a factory reset performed before disposal. That technical guidance is useful context, not proof that every consumer reset is certified or equivalent to a specialized sanitization process. NIST’s September 26, 2025 media-sanitization guidance defines sanitization in terms of making access to target data infeasible for a given level of effort. See NIST SP 800-124 Rev. 2 and NIST SP 800-88 Rev. 2.

NIST also notes that a factory reset does not clear SIM or SD cards, so a complete disposal process includes removing associated cards as well as resetting the phone. Treat each card separately if you will not reuse it.
