Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesDeleting files or quick-formatting a USB flash drive does not establish that its data is securely erased. For routine, low-sensitivity files, a documented full-clear method supported by the exact drive may be proportionate. For sensitive data, use a device-supported sanitization method with stronger assurance—or destroy the drive if you cannot verify a trustworthy erase method.
Choose an approach based on the data and the assurance you need
The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) defines media sanitization as a process that makes access to target data infeasible for a given level of effort. Its current guidance, SP 800-88 Rev. 2, published September 26, 2025, supersedes Rev. 1 and emphasizes an appropriate sanitization program, validation, and methods aligned with applicable standards or approved procedures—not one universal erase recipe.

| Situation | Proportionate choice | What it can establish |
|---|---|---|
| Routine files with low sensitivity; resistance to casual recovery through ordinary interfaces is sufficient | Use a documented, device-supported full-clear method, then check its completion status and the drive’s ordinary interface state. | Evidence that the selected operation completed and the drive appears cleared through ordinary use—not proof that every flash cell is unrecoverable. |
| Sensitive files or a requirement for stronger assurance | Check the exact model’s instructions and confirm the host can issue the drive’s documented sanitization feature. Follow an applicable current standard or approved procedure. | Assurance depends on the device, method, implementation, and validation; a successful format or ordinary interface check alone does not establish purge-level sanitization. |
| No trustworthy supported method, or required assurance exceeds what reuse can provide | Do not hand the drive over for reuse. Use appropriate electronic-media destruction equipment or a qualified provider. | Destruction prevents reuse; retain any documentation required by your organization or applicable process. |
NIST distinguishes Clear, Purge, and Destroy as different sanitization outcomes or method categories; they are not interchangeable labels. Select according to the data’s sensitivity and applicable controls. The NIST glossary entry for Clear describes that category in the context of SP 800-88 Rev. 2.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →For a drive you plan to reuse, check for a supported sanitization method
- Identify the exact USB device. Confirm the physical drive, its model, and the data you intend to remove before starting. If the instructions depend on a particular controller, utility, or host connection, verify those details too.
- Read the manufacturer’s instructions. Look for a documented sanitization feature for that model and confirm that your computer and connection can expose it. Do not assume a command or utility intended for another drive applies.
- Choose a method aligned with the required assurance. NIST Rev. 2 points to IEEE 2883, NSA specifications, or an organization-approved standard for technique details beyond its focused cryptographic-erase guidance. Follow the applicable procedure rather than treating a generic format as a secure erase.
- Run the documented operation and check its result. Confirm that the utility reports completion rather than an error, then inspect the drive through the ordinary interface for the expected empty-volume state. Stop if the result is unclear or the tool reports failure.
- Describe the result accurately. Completion and an apparently empty volume support that the operation ran and changed the ordinary view of the drive. They do not independently certify that data is unrecoverable under laboratory analysis or that a purge-level outcome was achieved.
There is a reason generic USB advice can be unreliable. NIST SP 800-88 Rev. 1, published in 2014 and now superseded, said most USB removable media did not support sanitize commands or did not expose them through standardized interfaces. That is historical, device-category guidance—not proof that every current USB stick lacks such a feature. Check the documentation for your exact drive.

Do not mistake deletion, formatting, or encryption for a completed sanitization
- Deleting files removes them from the file system’s ordinary view; it does not demonstrate that their data has been sanitized.
- Quick-formatting or creating a partition changes file-system or partition information, not proof that all physical flash cells have been cleared.
- Encryption can help protect data stored on removable media, but turning it on later does not establish that data already written to the drive was sanitized before transfer. Microsoft recommends BitLocker for removable-device data security in the context of removable-media permissions; that recommendation is about protecting data, not certifying an erase. See Microsoft’s removable-media permissions guidance.
- Degaussing is not a USB flash-drive erase method. NIST says not to use degaussing on non-magnetic media such as flash.
macOS: Disk Utility may not offer secure erase for flash media
Apple says Disk Utility cannot perform a secure erase when Security Options is unavailable, and its guide says secure-erase options are unavailable for SSDs. Do not describe an ordinary Disk Utility erase of a flash drive as a verified secure erase. See Apple’s instructions for erasing and reformatting a storage device in Disk Utility on Mac.

If the files are highly sensitive, a supported method cannot be established, or the required assurance exceeds what the device can provide for reuse, keep the drive out of circulation and arrange appropriate electronic-media destruction. NIST SP 800-88 Rev. 1 historically listed shredding, disintegration, and pulverization for USB removable media; current Rev. 2 directs users to applicable current standards and approved procedures for most technique details. Use equipment designed for electronic media or a qualified provider, not an ordinary paper shredder, and follow any organizational requirements for process documentation.
