SaaS providers run much of the infrastructure and application, but they do not automatically secure your users, access settings, connected apps, devices, or data practices. That shared-responsibility gap can leave a business exposed when accounts are compromised, integrations retain excessive permissions, or suspicious activity goes unnoticed. The risk is manageable: start by clarifying what the provider protects, then tighten identity and access, monitor activity, and test recovery.
What “shared responsibility” means for SaaS
Security duties are divided between the service provider and the customer, and the boundary varies by service. CISA says SaaS security relies heavily on the provider, while advising customers to understand the division of responsibilities and keep track of changes to provider services. Microsoft describes customers as generally responsible for their accounts, identities, data, access configuration, devices, and connectivity.

Those statements are not contradictory: a provider may operate the application and underlying infrastructure while the customer controls who can sign in, what they can reach, how the service is configured, and how data is handled. Ask each provider what it secures and what remains your job; revisit the answer when the service or its configuration changes. See CISA’s Cloud Security Technical Reference Architecture and Microsoft’s shared responsibility guidance.

Compromised identities
A stolen or reused password can give an attacker a path into business data. CISA recommends phishing-resistant multi-factor authentication (MFA), especially for email and accounts that access critical systems. Microsoft also documents credential stuffing, risky sign-ins, and abuse of OAuth tokens as threats that can expose sensitive data or help attackers move across workloads. Token abuse is a documented platform risk, not evidence that every SaaS integration is vulnerable. See CISA’s MFA and account-protection guidance and Microsoft’s identity-protection risk documentation.

- POWERFUL SECURITY KEY: The Security Key C NFC is the essential physical passkey for protecting your digital life from phishing attacks. It ensures only you can access your accounts.
- WORKS WITH 1000+ ACCOUNTS: Compatible with Google, Microsoft, and Apple. A single Security Key C NFC secures 100 of your favorite accounts, including email, password managers, and more.
- FAST & CONVENIENT LOGIN: Plug in your Security Key C NFC via USB-C and tap it, or tap it against your phone (NFC) to authenticate. No batteries, no internet connection, and no extra fees required.
- TRUSTED PASSKEY TECHNOLOGY: Uses the latest passkey standards (FIDO2/WebAuthn & FIDO U2F) but does not support One-Time Passwords. For complex needs, check out the YubiKey 5 Series.
- BUILT TO LAST: Made from tough, waterproof, and crush-resistant materials. Manufactured in Sweden and programmed in the USA with the highest security standards.
Overbroad roles and connected applications
Users, administrators, vendors, and connected apps may have more access than their work requires. OAuth applications can be granted permissions to act on a user’s behalf; a forgotten or over-permissioned grant can create an avoidable route to data. Inventory the SaaS services and connected applications you can see, remove unused access, and review permissions through the administrative controls each service provides. Microsoft documents OAuth-related attack paths in Microsoft 365; that example should not be generalized to every platform.
Configuration also matters. SaaS security posture management tools can assess supported app settings and recommend remediation, but the available controls depend on the product. Microsoft’s material on cloud app security and posture management describes platform capabilities, not an independent comparison of tools.

- POWERFUL SECURITY KEY: The YubiKey 5C NFC is the most versatile physical passkey, protecting your digital life from phishing attacks. It ensures only you can access your accounts
- WORKS WITH 1000+ ACCOUNTS: Compatible with popular accounts like Google, Microsoft, and Apple. A single YubiKey 5C NFC secures 100+ of your favorite accounts, including email, password managers, and more
- FAST & CONVENIENT LOGIN: Plug in your YubiKey 5C NFC via USB and tap it, or tap it against your phone (NFC), to authenticate. No batteries, no internet connection, and no extra fees required
- MOST SECURE PASSKEY: Supports FIDO2/WebAuthn, FIDO U2F, Yubico OTP, OATH-TOTP/HOTP, Smart card (PIV), and OpenPGP. That means it’s versatile, working almost anywhere you need it
- PRIMARY & SPARE KEYS: Just like having a spare house key, we recommend buying two YubiKeys - one for daily use and one as a spare. That way you’ll never get locked out of your accounts
Devices and external access
Even a well-configured service can be reached from a compromised device or through a third party with excessive privileges. Review the access vendors and managed service providers need, grant only the minimum required, and remove it when the work ends. Include user devices and connectivity in your responsibility review rather than assuming the SaaS provider secures them.

Unnoticed activity and weak recovery
Suspicious access can resemble routine cloud use. Microsoft lists signals such as impossible travel, credential access, unusual downloads, unexpected file sharing, mail-forwarding changes, and ransomware alerts. Alerts are useful only if someone can review and investigate them. CISA’s broader ransomware guidance also recommends logs and alerts, backups, and protections such as object lock or delete protection where supported; these are general resilience measures, not SaaS-specific guarantees. See Microsoft’s anomaly-detection documentation and CISA’s StopRansomware Guide.

A prioritized checklist for reducing SaaS risk
-
Require stronger sign-in protection
Require phishing-resistant MFA for important accounts, starting with email and accounts that can access critical systems. Where the service and identity provider support it, consider passwordless sign-in using cryptographic keys. Before buying a FIDO2 or other hardware security key, confirm compatibility with the services and sign-in policies your organization uses.
-
Map apps, users, and permissions
Keep an inventory of SaaS services and, where administrative controls allow, connected OAuth applications. Remove unused accounts and grants. Review roles, narrow excessive permissions, and consider separate administrative accounts so routine work does not require elevated access.

Protect data and practice recovery
Maintain backups and test that you can restore the data and access your business needs. Where the service or storage system supports it, use protections against deletion or overwriting, such as object lock or delete protection.
-
Write down the provider/customer boundary
Record which controls the provider operates and which your organization must configure or monitor. Update that record when service offerings, integrations, or settings change. Use it to identify responsibilities that have no owner.
How to assess a SaaS service’s security controls
Use the same questions for each service rather than relying on a broad “secure” label. The answers depend on the service and plan; the cited sources do not establish a ranked vendor comparison or prove that one product is best.
