How to Secure Your Redis Installation on Ubuntu

A practical guide to securing Redis on Ubuntu: limit network exposure, replace the passwordless default user with scoped ACLs, understand requirepass, add TLS, and verify every change.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Secure Redis on Ubuntu by limiting its listening interface, keeping protected mode enabled, requiring authentication, and using Redis ACLs to give each application only the commands and keys it needs. A fresh Redis instance can have an enabled default user with no password, so network binding alone is not enough.

Redis 6 and later should use named ACL users. The older requirepass setting remains available, but it assigns one shared password to the default user and does not provide least-privilege access. After every change, verify the effective bind, protected-mode, and ACL state from a local administrative connection.

Understand the security model before changing Ubuntu

Redis security has three related layers: network exposure, authentication, and authorization. Network exposure determines which interfaces can reach the server. Authentication proves which client or user is connecting. Authorization determines which commands, key patterns, and Pub/Sub channels that identity may use.

Protected mode is a safety fallback, not a complete deployment design. Since Redis 3.2.0, a server started with the default configuration, bound broadly, and configured without a password enters protected mode. It then answers only loopback clients and returns an explanatory error to other addresses. Administrators can disable protected mode or set a manual bind, so an apparently protected process can still become reachable after a configuration change.

Redis authentication also changed in Redis 6. ACLs are the recommended model because they support named users and fine-grained command and key permissions. The legacy requirepass directive still works, but it sets the password for the default ACL user rather than creating a separate identity.

Check the installed Redis version

Directive names and available features depend on the installed release. Check the binary before applying a guide written for another version:

redis-server --version

Ubuntu package layouts and service names can vary by release and installation method. The paths /etc/redis/redis.conf, /etc/redis/users.acl, and the service name redis are common in Ubuntu package installations, but they are not universal. Inspect the installed service and configuration instead of assuming those names:

systemctl list-unit-files --type=service | grep -i redis
sudo systemctl cat redis

If the second command reports that the unit does not exist, use the exact unit name shown by the first command. Do not edit a configuration file that the running service does not load.

Reduce Redis network exposure

Choose the narrowest bind address

If Redis and the application run on the same Ubuntu host, bind Redis to loopback, normally 127.0.0.1. The application connects locally while other machines cannot reach the Redis TCP socket. If the application is on another server, bind to the specific private interface used for that connection rather than every interface. Binding to * or 0.0.0.0 exposes Redis on all IPv4 interfaces and should not be used as a shortcut.

Find the effective value from a local Redis connection:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
redis-cli -h 127.0.0.1 CONFIG GET bind
redis-cli -h 127.0.0.1 CONFIG GET protected-mode

These commands report the running server’s settings, which is more reliable than reading an unused or differently named configuration file. If authentication is already enabled, supply valid credentials using the client options supported by your installed redis-cli.

Keep protected mode enabled

Protected mode should remain enabled unless you have a documented reason to turn it off and have replaced its safety function with tightly controlled binding, authentication, and network filtering. It prevents ordinary remote access when Redis is broadly bound and has no password, but it does not enforce least privilege and it does not protect traffic from an authorized client.

Check the value after a restart:

redis-cli -h 127.0.0.1 CONFIG GET protected-mode

A value of yes confirms that the fallback is active. It does not prove that the service is safe: an authenticated user can still have excessive permissions, and a firewall or private network may still be required.

Filter traffic at the host or network boundary

When Redis must accept connections from another server, restrict the port to the application servers in the Ubuntu host firewall or an equivalent network firewall. Third-party hardening guidance commonly recommends allowing only approved private addresses and never exposing Redis directly to the public internet. This is operational advice rather than a replacement for Redis authentication; use both controls.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Binding to a private interface limits where Redis listens, while a firewall limits which source addresses can reach that interface. Recheck both after changing network interfaces, cloud security groups, container networking, or reverse-proxy rules.

Configure authentication and least privilege

Use a named ACL user on Redis 6 and later

ACLs let you create one identity per application, worker, or administrative role. Each identity can be enabled or disabled, assigned a password, restricted to key patterns, and limited to specific commands or command categories.

Create the application user before disabling the built-in user. The following illustrates the structure; choose a long, randomly generated secret and a key pattern that matches only that application’s data:

ACL SETUSER app on resetpass >Use-a-long-random-secret ~app:* +get +set +del

The on flag enables the account. resetpass removes previous passwords, >... adds a password, ~app:* limits key access to keys beginning with app:, and the command rules permit only the listed operations. Add other commands only when the application demonstrably needs them. A read-only worker, for example, should receive read commands rather than write permissions. Avoid granting broad categories such as all commands when a smaller set works.

Inspect the resulting users and permissions:

ACL LIST

Redis prints one line per user. A named user should show its enabled state, password status, key patterns, channel patterns, and command rules. Treat that output as the authoritative record of the running server.

Understand the dangerous fresh-install default

On a fresh instance, ACL LIST shows the equivalent of:

user default on nopass ~* &* +@all

This means the default user is enabled, has no password, can access every key and channel, and can run every command. Because it has the nopass flag, new connections are authenticated automatically as default. This is why an installation can accept commands locally without any explicit AUTH exchange.

After creating and testing a named account, disable the built-in account if your clients no longer need it:

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

One-click scans. No signup required.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
ACL SETUSER default off

With default disabled, new connections begin unauthenticated and must authenticate with a named user, using AUTH or the credential form of HELLO. The resetpass operation clears the nopass state when you need the default account to require a password rather than accept automatic authentication:

ACL SETUSER default resetpass

Do not disable the default user until a separate account has been tested from the application host. Keep an authenticated administrative session open while making the change so a failed application credential does not lock out every operator.

Use requirepass only when its limitations fit

The legacy setting is configured as requirepass. When present, unauthenticated clients are refused queries until they authenticate. A one-argument command authenticates as the default user:

AUTH your-secret

Because requirepass maps to default, it preserves that user’s broad permissions unless you separately change its ACL rules. It is therefore useful for compatibility with older clients, but it is weaker than separate named users for multi-application or least-privilege deployments. A shared password also makes rotation and incident response harder: changing it affects every client that uses the account.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If you must use this method, choose a high-entropy secret, protect the configuration file, update every client through its supported secret-management mechanism, and verify that unauthenticated requests are rejected. Do not treat requirepass as a substitute for a restricted bind or firewall.

Persist ACL changes safely

ACL changes made at runtime must be saved using the persistence mechanism configured for your Redis version. The standard command is:

ACL SAVE

Some deployments load users from an ACL file such as /etc/redis/users.acl, but that path is package-dependent and was not confirmed for every Ubuntu installation. Find the active aclfile setting in the configuration used by the service, ensure the service account can read it, and protect the file from untrusted users. After saving, restart the service during a maintenance window and run ACL LIST again to confirm that the intended users survived the restart.

Protect credentials and traffic in transit

Authentication prevents unauthorised commands, but a plain TCP connection can expose credentials and data to anyone able to observe the network path. Production guidance commonly pairs authentication with TLS, especially when Redis traffic crosses hosts, cloud networks, shared infrastructure, or any segment you do not fully control.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Enable TLS according to the documentation for the exact Redis version and package you installed, provision certificates with an appropriate renewal process, and configure clients to validate the server certificate. Test certificate validation and hostname handling before enforcing TLS-only connections. Do not paste passwords into shell history, process lists, source repositories, or world-readable service files; use the application’s secret store or a protected environment mechanism.

Apply the hardening changes in a controlled order

  1. Record the current state. From a local administrative connection, capture CONFIG GET bind, CONFIG GET protected-mode, and ACL LIST. Save the output in your change record without exposing passwords.
  2. Confirm the service and configuration. Identify the active systemd unit and the file it loads. Ubuntu’s familiar paths and unit names are common, not guaranteed.
  3. Restrict listening interfaces. Set loopback binding for a same-host application, or the required private interface for a remote application. Remove broad wildcard binding unless it is genuinely required and protected by additional controls.
  4. Keep protected mode enabled. Verify the effective value after the configuration reload or restart.
  5. Create a named ACL user. Assign a unique secret, the smallest required key patterns, and the smallest command set. Test it from the application host before changing the default account.
  6. Remove anonymous default access. Disable default, or at minimum clear its nopass state and assign an explicit password. Ensure operators have a separate administrative identity.
  7. Persist and restart deliberately. Save ACL state, restart the actual Redis unit during a maintenance window, and repeat the configuration and ACL checks.
  8. Enforce network policy. Limit the Redis port to approved application addresses at the host or network firewall. Add TLS when traffic leaves a trusted local host or crosses a shared network.

Verify the result from local and remote clients

Inspect the running configuration

Run the checks after every restart, package upgrade, or configuration-management change:

redis-cli -h 127.0.0.1 CONFIG GET bind
redis-cli -h 127.0.0.1 CONFIG GET protected-mode
redis-cli -h 127.0.0.1 ACL LIST

If the server requires authentication, perform these checks from an authenticated administrative connection. Confirm that the bind value is the intended interface, protected mode is enabled, the application user is enabled, and the default user no longer has accidental nopass and unrestricted permissions.

Test authentication from an allowed host

Use the client syntax supported by your installed tools to connect as the named application user and run a harmless command such as PING. Then test an operation outside that user’s key pattern or command list; it should be denied. A successful PING proves connectivity and authentication, not that authorization is correctly scoped.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Test rejection from an unapproved path

From a host that should not be able to use Redis, a connection attempt should be blocked by the firewall or fail authentication. An unauthenticated remote PING commonly returns a NOAUTH error when the server is reachable but requires credentials; protected mode can instead return its explanatory protected-mode error. Treat either result as evidence about the current path, not as proof that every other interface is closed.

Compare the main deployment choices

Choice Network exposure Authentication model Permission scope Best fit and limitation
Loopback bind Local host only Still requires ACLs or a password Independent of binding Best when the application shares the Ubuntu host; cannot serve a remote application.
Private-interface bind plus firewall Selected private network, restricted by source rules ACLs recommended; requirepass remains compatible ACLs can limit commands, keys, and channels Suitable for separate application servers; requires accurate network policy.
Wildcard or public bind Every listening interface Must have strong authentication and additional controls ACLs still apply, but exposure is widest Avoid by default; protected mode is only a fallback and can be changed.
Named ACL users Works with any bind choice Separate credentials per role or application Fine-grained command, key, and channel rules Recommended for Redis 6 and later; requires client credentials and ACL persistence.
requirepass Works with any bind choice One shared password on the default user Does not by itself reduce the default user’s broad permissions Useful for legacy compatibility; weaker for multiple applications and least privilege.

Troubleshoot common lockouts and errors

NOAUTH Authentication required

The server is reachable but the client has not authenticated, or it is using the wrong authentication form. Supply the named username and password for an ACL deployment. A one-argument AUTH is specifically the legacy/default-user form; it is not a substitute for a named username when the default account is disabled.

Protected-mode connection error

The client is remote, Redis is in protected mode, and the connection does not satisfy the server’s local-access rules. First verify the bind address and the intended topology. If the application should be local, connect through loopback. If it must be remote, bind to the required private interface, configure authentication, and restrict the firewall rather than simply disabling protected mode.

ACL permission denied

The user authenticated but its command or key pattern is too narrow for the application. Inspect ACL LIST, identify the exact denied operation, and add only that command or key pattern after confirming it is necessary. Do not solve a single denial by granting all commands or all keys.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Clients fail after disabling default

Existing connection pools may have relied on automatic authentication as default. Update their configuration to send the named username and password, recycle the pool, and test a new connection. Keep a separate administrative session until the rollout is complete.

Settings disappear after reboot

The change may have been made with a runtime command but not saved, or the service may load a different configuration or ACL file. Check the active unit, its command line, the configured aclfile, and the post-restart output of CONFIG GET and ACL LIST.

Operational practices that keep Redis secure

  • Give every application its own ACL identity so a credential leak can be contained and rotated without changing unrelated services.
  • Use separate administrative credentials and do not embed them in application code or publicly readable configuration.
  • Review ACL permissions when an application adds a feature; remove commands and key patterns that are no longer needed.
  • Monitor authentication failures, unexpected client addresses, configuration changes, and restarts.
  • Recheck binds, firewall rules, protected mode, and ACL state after Ubuntu, Redis, container, or cloud-network changes.
  • Use TLS for connections that leave a trusted local host, and verify certificate validation rather than merely enabling encryption.

A secure Ubuntu deployment is therefore a combination: narrow network binding, protected mode left on, authenticated clients, least-privilege ACLs, controlled persistence, and verification after each change. No single directive provides all of those protections.
