The right recovery route depends on whether you can still use your linked email, have a two-step verification backup code, or see unauthorized account changes.
Secure the email account linked to PSN
Your email inbox can be used to reset your PlayStation password, so protect it before starting recovery. Change the email account password to a strong, unique one. If you cannot access or secure that mailbox, contact its provider first; do not reuse a password that may have been exposed. PlayStation Support recommends unique passwords and warns that compromised email can put other accounts at risk (compromised accounts and unauthorized charges; security best practices).

Recover your PlayStation Network account
If you can access the linked email
- Open Account Management.
- Select Trouble Signing In?, then Recover Your Account.
- Follow the instructions in the email from PlayStation to regain access and change your sign-in details.
Use only PlayStation’s own recovery flow. Do not give your password or verification codes to a third party offering account recovery; PlayStation warns that scam messages may pose as account or support alerts (security best practices).

If you cannot use the linked email or account details were changed
If you forgot which email is attached, lost access to it, or the sign-in ID or password was changed without your permission, contact PlayStation Support through its Online Assistant for compromised accounts. Self-service recovery depends on receiving the recovery email, so use Sony’s support route when that is not possible.

Sign out other devices and check for unauthorized activity
After regaining access, end active PlayStation sessions so a person who signed in elsewhere is less likely to retain access. In Account Management, go to Security and choose Sign Out on All Devices (sign-in and sign-out guidance).
- Set a new, unique sign-in method and review the account’s security settings.
- Check transaction history for purchases you do not recognize. PlayStation directs users to its refund and cancellation guidance; eligibility has limitations, so a refund is not guaranteed (compromised accounts and unauthorized charges).
- If you cannot change account credentials or find unauthorized transactions, contact PlayStation Support.
- If a console was stolen, remotely sign out all devices, then follow PlayStation’s guidance to deactivate consoles and consider removing payment methods.
Get past a two-step verification lockout
If you can no longer receive a two-step verification (2SV) code, use one of the backup codes you saved when setting up 2SV. PlayStation provides 10 single-use backup codes; each can be used only once. If you have no usable code or no access to the phone or mobile number, contact PlayStation through the Online Assistant for 2SV issues.

Choose the recovery path that fits your situation

These routes are conditional, not alternatives to try indiscriminately: use self-service when you control the linked inbox, a backup code when 2SV is the obstacle, and support when access or account details are compromised.
Strengthen sign-in after recovery
Use a unique password or set up a passkey
PlayStation supports passkeys as an alternative sign-in method. Its setup and management guide covers PS5, PS4, the PlayStation website, PlayStation App, and Mac Remote Play. To set one up, open Account Management and go to Security, then follow the passkey instructions (passkey setup and management). Compatibility issues can occur with some Android and Windows combinations and Mac Remote Play; check Sony’s current compatibility guidance if setup or sign-in fails. Some hardware security keys may also encounter issues, so buying one is not a guaranteed fix.

If you use a password, make it strong and unique to PSN. A password manager can help generate and store separate passwords for your accounts (security best practices).
Protect purchases and recovery access
- Keep 2SV backup codes somewhere private but accessible if you lose your phone.
- Do not share account credentials, verification codes, or recovery links.
- Avoid signing in on public or shared devices, and be wary of unexpected messages, QR codes, and sites promising free in-game currency.
- PlayStation offers Require Password at Checkout as a purchase-protection option. It is incompatible with accounts that use passkeys, so choose the sign-in and checkout settings that work for your account (security best practices; passkey setup and management).
PlayStation’s US support pages provide these procedures but do not display publication dates; menu labels and availability can change. Check the live support page for the latest instructions.
