These steps protect both the device and the accounts it can access. Menu names and feature availability differ by phone, operating system version, account provider, and region; the Android instructions below are specific to Android.
Secure the phone first
A phone in someone else’s hands can expose messages, saved sessions, payment apps, and the email account used to reset other passwords. A screen lock is the first barrier, while updates and sensible app settings reduce other routes in.

Use a strong screen lock
- Set a PIN or password that is difficult to guess; avoid easily inferred choices such as a birthday or a simple sequence.
- Biometrics can make routine unlocking easier, but keep a strong PIN or password as the fallback. Android Help recommends a strong PIN or password and biometrics, and says some theft protections depend on having a screen lock: Android theft protection.
- On Android, some theft-protection features require Android 15 or later. Check your device’s settings and version rather than assuming every Android phone offers the same controls.
Keep software and apps current
Install operating-system and app updates when offered. Remove apps you no longer use, and review the security and privacy settings of apps that handle money, payments, or personal messages. Exact update paths vary by manufacturer and software version.
Protect accounts, starting with email
Your primary email account is especially important because it may be used to reset other accounts. Secure it first, then apply the same approach to financial, payment, social, tax, and shopping accounts. The FTC recommends multifactor authentication (MFA), which requires an additional proof of identity beyond a password: FTC guidance on two-factor authentication.

- Use a unique password for every account. A password manager can help create and manage unique passwords, as Google explains in its password manager guidance.
- Turn on MFA wherever the account offers it, prioritizing your email and accounts with financial or sensitive information.
- Review active sessions, recovery phone numbers and email addresses, and third-party app access. Remove sessions or connected apps you do not recognize or no longer need.
- Never give a one-time verification code to someone who contacts you unexpectedly. Do not sign in through links in suspicious messages; open the service’s app or type its known address yourself.
Choose the strongest practical sign-in method
The best available option depends on what each account supports and how you will regain access if a device or key is lost. Passkeys and hardware security keys offer stronger resistance to phishing than one-time codes. Google Account Help says, “Unlike passwords, passkeys can’t be shared, copied, written down, or accidentally given to someone else”: Google’s passkey guidance.

The FTC says authenticator apps and security keys are safer than text or email codes. CISA’s Mobile Communications Best Practice Guidance, dated December 2024, recommends FIDO-based authentication and migrating away from SMS-based MFA. If an account only offers SMS, enabling it is still preferable to using only a password.

Prepare recovery before anything goes wrong
Strong security is useful only if you can still get into your accounts. Confirm that recovery email addresses and phone numbers are current and controlled by you. Add a backup passkey or security key where available, or save recovery codes somewhere secure and separate from the phone. Do not store your only recovery route on the device it is meant to recover.
For Google accounts, a newly added security key may not be available immediately, and Google documents alternative ways to regain access if a key is lost: Google account recovery options. Set up alternatives in advance rather than waiting until the primary method has disappeared.

Prepare for loss or theft
Android’s Find Hub can locate, lock, sign out of Google accounts on the device, or erase data, depending on setup and conditions. Enable the relevant finding and location settings before the phone goes missing, and keep backups current. Android Help’s instructions are specific to supported Android devices: Find, secure, or erase a lost Android device.
- Hide sensitive notification contents on the lock screen so incoming messages do not reveal account details or verification codes.
- Consider a SIM PIN to make unauthorized use of the SIM harder. Keep the PIN somewhere safe; entering it incorrectly repeatedly can lock the SIM.
- Keep the phone’s IMEI available separately from the phone. If it is missing, contact your carrier to ask about pausing service.
- Keep device backups current so erasing a lost phone does not also erase your only copy of important data.
If the phone is already missing
- From another trusted device, use the platform’s device-finding service to locate or lock it, or erase it if appropriate and available.
- Contact your carrier to suspend the line or SIM and ask what information it needs; the IMEI may help.
- Change the password for your primary email account and other important accounts from a trusted device. Sign out of sessions you do not recognize and review recovery details and connected apps.
- Contact financial or payment services if you see suspicious access or activity, and follow their account-protection instructions.
- Use your prepared backup sign-in method or recovery process if a passkey, authenticator, or security key was on the missing phone.
Remote finding, locking, and erasing depend on the phone being set up for those features and on applicable device and network conditions. Do not assume an erase or location request will succeed if the device is offline.
