How to Secure Your Home Router and Wi-Fi Network

A practical router-security checklist: choose WPA3 or WPA2, change both passwords, update software, review convenience settings, and separate guests or cameras.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Secure your home network by using WPA3 Personal—or WPA2 Personal if WPA3 is unavailable—changing both the Wi-Fi and router administrator passwords, keeping router software updated, and reviewing features that allow remote access or automatic connections. The exact menu names vary by router and internet provider, so use your model’s instructions for the steps below.

1. Change the router administrator password

The administrator password protects the router’s settings. It is different from the Wi-Fi password: someone who can sign in as an administrator may be able to change network settings. Find the sign-in steps in your router’s manual or your internet service provider’s instructions, then replace the default administrator credentials if the device allows it. Choose a unique password that you do not use for another account and that does not reveal personal details. Change the default administrator username too, if that option is available. When you finish, log out of the router interface.

2. Select supported Wi-Fi encryption and set a unique password

In the router’s wireless security settings, choose WPA3 Personal when available. If the router does not support WPA3, use WPA2 Personal. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) states: “To encrypt your network, simply update your router settings to either WPA3 Personal or WPA2 Personal.” Avoid WEP and WPA, which are outdated options. Set a unique Wi-Fi password rather than reusing the administrator password or a password used elsewhere. See the FTC’s home Wi-Fi security guidance.

If WPA2 Personal and WPA3 Personal are both missing, check for a router software update first. If an update does not add either option, consider replacing the router; see the replacement criteria below.

  • Powerful Dual-Core 900MHz Processor – Handles multiple data streams simultaneously for reliable performance across your devices. Ensures smooth streaming, online gaming, and video conferencing without buffering or lag.

3. Choose a network name that does not identify you

Set a generic Wi-Fi network name (SSID) that does not reveal your name, home address, router brand, or model. CISA recommends avoiding identifying details in the SSID in its Telework Essentials guidance. A less revealing name is not a substitute for supported encryption or a strong password.

4. Keep router software up to date

Router software updates can address security issues, but the update process depends on the model and provider. Check the manufacturer’s website or app for update instructions and enable automatic updates if the router offers that setting. If your internet provider supplied the router, ask whether it installs updates automatically and whether you need to take any action. The FTC’s guidance on securing internet-connected devices also recommends keeping connected equipment updated.

  • DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
  • AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
  • CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
  • EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
  • OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.

5. Review remote management, WPS, and UPnP

These settings can make it easier to manage the router or connect devices, but they can also weaken security. The FTC recommends turning them off. Before changing a setting, check your router’s manual or ask your provider if a device or service you rely on requires it.

  • Remote management: Allows router settings to be accessed from outside the home network. Turn it off if you do not need to administer the router remotely.
  • WPS: A convenience feature for connecting devices to Wi-Fi. Turn it off if you do not rely on it to connect equipment.
  • UPnP: Lets devices or applications request that the router open network connections automatically. Turn it off if your household does not need that behavior.

6. Separate guests and consider isolating cameras

Create a guest Wi-Fi network with its own name and password if your router supports it. Share those credentials with visitors instead of the main Wi-Fi password. As the FTC explains in its home Wi-Fi guidance, a separate guest login can help keep a guest device with malware from reaching devices on your primary network. For security cameras, consider a separate network from computers and printers; the FTC also discusses camera security in its home security camera guidance. Guest-network features and how they isolate devices differ by router, so check the device instructions.

  • Improved Battery Life: Target Wake Time helps your devices to communicate efficiently while consuming less power.
  • Improved Cooling Design: No heat ups, no throttles. A larger heat sink and redefined case design cools the WiFi 6 system and enables your network to stay at top speeds in more versatile environments.

7. Check connected devices and the firewall

Review the router’s connected-device list and disconnect equipment you no longer use. If you do not recognize a device, check its name and status against your household’s phones, computers, smart-home equipment, and other connected devices before removing access. Router interfaces label this list differently, and some device names may not be obvious.

Check that the router firewall is enabled. A built-in firewall adds a layer of protection, but it does not prevent every attack. For help locating this setting, consult the router manual or your provider’s instructions. Log out of the administrator interface when you have finished.

When to replace a router

First check for an update. If the router still offers neither WPA2 Personal nor WPA3 Personal after updating, consider replacing it with a model that supports at least one of those security options and receives software updates. Check that the replacement is compatible with your internet service and offers the guest-network or device-separation features your household needs. The cited U.S. government guidance does not endorse a particular model.

This guidance draws on U.S. government consumer and cybersecurity sources. Menu labels, features, provider update arrangements, and product availability vary by router, internet provider, and market; follow the instructions for your equipment.
